The swap was performed by Pacific Import Auto in the Tacoma, WA area. v7 JDM STi engine and a 5-speed RA gearbox I believe. The driver is a member here so he may chime in with more info.
WagonMonster 12-15-2005 12:53 PM

Yeah, he's a member here, and he's pretty bummed right now.

He also has a pretty sweet Forester.

It's a ver8 swap with RA gears in a WRX case. Kept the 4.11 gearing.

And Wagon is right, I'm pretty bummed. Fortunately we walked away from it. :)

What happened Erik?

That looks like a hard shunt

He rents it from Cascade Auto on the left coast for the western events. It's easier than towing 6000 miles round trip.

Oh look, the scene of the crime! I built the rollcage in Erik's Legacy so I was very interested in seeing how things faired. The car is completely FUBAR'ed, stick a fork in it. Erik and Jay went off at high speed, probably 70+ and hit hard multiple times. The whole car is severely bent. The cage held up well, which I was happy to see. No cracked welds or anything. The cage did move a bit. It took some hard hits and rocks on it. It looks like the car must have landed on the right front corner once because the passenger side front strut tower is ballooned up (even though it's reinforced with 11ga plate) and is now sitting about one to two inches higher than the driver's side. The car hit so hard that it twisted the shell enough that the driver's door popped open during the roll. The reports I heard was that it did an endo and then rolled. I like to see how my work holds up but I don't like to see it tested like this. I'm just glad Erik and Jay are OK and just got their bells rung a bit.
That photo above doesn't really show how bad the car is. I took a bunch of photos of the corpse but will only post them if Erik is cool with it.
cfvwtuner 12-15-2005 05:32 PM

Wow. Glad to hear the driver and codriver walked away. Thanks to all the cage builders out there.
RoundtheBend 12-15-2005 06:26 PM

Thanks again Dave! :D

Post whatever pictures you feel applicable.

WRSport 12-16-2005 04:41 AM

Ouch....Glad you two had no major injuries.

Props to Dave Clark for the post accident interest in how his cage work held up etc.. I want to hope all cage builders have this follow through but I know its not the case.
hoche 12-16-2005 05:04 AM

Wow. I only got a brief glimpse of it as I flew by, but I remember thinking it looked like a wad of crumpled aluminum foil. Glad to hear the cage held up. Kudos to you Dave.
Porsche914boxer4 12-16-2005 11:12 AM

the best part is that Erik and Jay stayed out all night with us partying afterwards, all bruised and concussed (haha is that a word?)...

Hope you get rolling again soon!

Eli,
We'll be back out as soon as we find another shell and get it built, whenever that might be. :)

Erik, sorry didn't take any pictures of your car in the morning, I was summoned to help the Gushi team to drive their service truck 6am in the morning. We took off right away, so no chance to take any picture.

Hey, what sup Victor! :)

Wag - now you've got me thinking. :p ;)

Walter - no worries, we got plenty when we got the car home. Hope you had a good time with the Gushi team! :D

Missed Ramada this year. Run it twice from finish to end. Need to save the $$
for other rallies. This stuff gets bloody expensive!
I think Eric can vouch for that now!

Other than that live at work and try to have some fun.
Having a new v5-v6 sti built up. Another daily driver/rolling parts bin;)
WRXedUSA 12-17-2005 11:59 AM

Thanks errybody.

Glad everyone is OK.

'97-99 LGT's are my favorite!

Here is the Fram/Prestone Impreza from New Zealand and Iorio's Evo. That tunred out to be when of the better races of the stage.

The only problems I can see with the wagon idea is.....

a) risking J's ire for stealing her idea

but more inportantly, that is a huge caverous area in the back and those old shells are not anywhere near as stiff.

You risk having to add a lot extra of weight to the cage to make that stiff enough due to the lack of structure...

Plus I know which moderator's ire I would much rather avoid and it ain't you!

b1)You've got a good point Andy. I'm going to check with Dave and see what he has to say about it.

b2)Do you seriously think I'm worried about extra weight? Have you forgotten what our last car was? Spry it certainly wasn't.

No I didn't but extra cage, especially if it higher/heavier that it needs to be ain't CG friendly....

But then again given what you have done so far this year, and you're not beign worried about weight may I sugest the following.....

http://www.rrservices.co.uk/index2.html have a look under the armour section

:D:lol:
Ryan24 12-19-2005 02:07 AM

We can see if you can borrow my boss' tank to run a stage with, although welding a cage in there might be difficult and where would the codriver sit...the turrent :)
Might be safer that way

Actually, not quite. We did it in 2001 with the Subaru Canada Rally Team. John and Clarke Paynter driving. They won the PGT class in Canada that year in a WRX wagon.

I know what Erik wants to do and I don't thinks it's necessarily any less stiff than a Legacy. Maybe, maybe not. In any case that's all moot once you put a cage in it. It will have plenty of torsional rigidity then. It would have basically the same cage as the Legacy had. There is no need for any extra cage members in a wagon body. The rear sheetmetal is sacrificial. We don't care if the roof collapses behind the main hoop (which it did on Erik's Legacy, BTW), we just want the cockpit to remain intact. My concern is the center of gravity may be higher than the Leggy and with the extra sheet metal and glass weight at the rear the polar moment may be increased making for a car that's more likely to have the tail come out suddenly at the limit. But ditch the glass, put in some Lexan windows, maybe a fiberglass rear hatch...
