Congratulations Ken Block

With all the talk of Travis this, and Travis that . . . (not that he doesn't deserve it) Ken Block has kinda been left out in the cold.
So, I would just like to congratulate Ken and Alex on a great job this season.
To finish 2nd in the RA series is a fantastic achievement.
Well done guys!

There are various flavours of "run-flat" tech that are used or have been used in rally, but the kind of run-flat that I believe you're thinking of would be no more than an exercise in futility on a gravel stage... it would never hold up.

Indeed, Ken and Alex have come into thier own the past two years.
I would say that KB/AG "know" how to rally, as in knowing when to push, when to stay conservative.

Mousse is not allowed in Rally America events. The tires can only be filled with air.

| RichardM | 12-05-2006 10:49 AM |
Nitrogen is okay but over rated. However, it is handy to use on a rally because a nitrogen cylinder is easier to take along than a compressor.
| bjorn240 | 12-05-2006 11:04 AM |
Air. The rules call for air. So anything over 78.084% nitrogen could (theoretically) get you excluded. And you can put air in a cylinder just as easily as nitrogen.

Hmm
Interesting.
a $.25 air hose is probably easier to find at a gas station in the sticks anyway.

I second that notion. Congrats is definately deserved, but I think a "thank you" is more appropriate. Your behind-the-scenes work to promote the sport hasn't gone un-noticed! So again, thank you!
| KBlock | 12-06-2006 01:09 PM |
Thanks everyone for the compliments.
It's been an up and down year...and I have learned a lot. It's been amazing being part of the new development of rally here in the US. We have had lots of success, and there is more to come.
Special thanks to my co-driver Alex Gelsomino. He's been instrumental in my success and a great team mate.
Also...with out the my great sponsors, none of this would be possible. So, thanks to Subaru, Monster Energy, DC Shoes, BFG, A-Stars, Spy, PIAA, Motul, STI, SPT, Recaro and Meguiar's. Please support any of these companies if you have a chance. They are putting support in to make this program work, grow and promote rally.
Vermont SportsCar really needs more recognition that it gets in Travis and my success. Lance and his team have put together an incredible program. Just a simple stat really shows just how good it is...out of the 46 career rally starts (total starts for Travis and I), there has only been 2 mechanical DNF's. That's a 96% mechanical success rate...amazing (especially in rally)!
Congrats also to Travis and Christian. They did an amazing job this year.

Yeah, I think that rule is silly. Allowing nitrogen in a nitrogen tank is _way cheaper_ than people bringing a generator to power a compressor.
If Friday night circle track guys can afford it, I don't think outlawing it for rally is reasonable.
*rant* :D

No WRC cars use run flats, or run with like fix a flat type stuff inside their tire so if they have a puncture then the hole seals before you loose too much air.
That would have done nothing for ken in Maine if thats what you were thinking though.

Christian, we need to discuss this with Mike over on the RA forums. I'm a practical engineer who occasionally has to pick nits but I hate doing it. Nitrogen is air for all practical purposes. The rule is written to prohibit mousses but not moose.

I don't think I need to discuss it with Mike; I'm ok with it as it stands. :) The rule is pretty explicit, too. The air bit is separate from the Mousse bit. I'll quote it.
6. Tires, including spare, to be inspected for condition of sidewalls as well as tread and for absence of metal protruding from tread.
Studded tires and similar tires containing metal protruding from the tread area are prohibited. Further, all tires must have a minimum tread depth of 2/32", measured across the complete tread surface. Any use of advanced tire sealing or inflating technologies (a.k.a. Mousse) is banned from all Rally America events. Tire warmers are not allowed.
The interior of the tire (the space between the rim and the internal part of the tire) must be filled only with air. Use of conventional inner tubes is allowed.

Maybe not the place to ask but does this mean that if another ice/snow event were to run, competitors, under RA rules couldn't even run DOT legal studded tires without an exemption in the supp regs?

Thanks to everyone for the nice words.
Ken and I have had a good season, marked by some bad luck, but with some fantastic moments like our wins in Missouri and Michigan, the experience in Mexico and the medal at Xgames.
The new season starts in barely 7 weeks and should be a good one with the announced ESPN TV package and the confirmation of Rally for Xgames 13.
See you all on the stages.

Wow I can't wait for Sno* Drift! I've been watching rally for 5 year since grade 8 and haven't missed a WRC event yet. This will be my first rally event, finally, as the Rocky Mountain Rally always conflicted with something. Can't wait to see you guys rip up the snow-covered Atlanta. I might even be getting a chance to help out with rally tech. See you guys there!
