Shaving Door Handles

Can we shave door handles with our cars? I really wanna do it it looks so L337. lol no but seriously can we do it on our cars and how much do people charge for a job like this?
| mcowger | 03-02-2005 08:41 PM |
It can be done on any car, but its going to be pretty damn expensive. Well into the thousands I'm sure.

You would have a better response asking this in the Interior/Exterior section. But I agree it would look nice. I would really like to get the lock shaved off of my trunk too.

Into the thousands? That seems extreme for whats involved. Really, all you're doing is installing/lining up some little mechanisms and filling a hole in the body. I'd expect it to increase if your the door handle is right in the middle of a body line though.

Wrong forum but:
I got a ca$h quote and it came out to $500 for both rear handles, and it would take at least 3 weeks; they'd work on it when they had time. If I want it faster, well...cost goes up to a per hour basis and then it gets close to the $1000 mark. It seems simple but a pro will fill, sand, prime and repaint the entire door instead of feathering out and hoping it matches well.

Exactly, and thats why I mentioned the thousands numbers....doing it right will require a full repaint of the doors. take his quote above of $500, double it for all 4 doors, add another 200 for the rear lock and a solenoid to run it, and you are into the $1200-$1400 range.

I'm still trying to figure out what "L337" is.
| 3BadHabbits | 03-03-2005 08:55 PM |
Dont know. If you have an $30000 STi why would you want it to look like something else?

My answer would be because I can't afford the cool million it would cost to build my own car from scratch. Modding the STi is a lot faster and easier and cheaper overall.

Still dont know what L337 looks like. There is no picture. There is explination of some hacking BS. How can you make your STi look like a hacker? Modding buy cutting the door handles off? Youre right...go "HACK" away. Try to sell that car in a few years.
I have to update myself with gen y urban dictionary BS. F that....

There is some irony with the whole "hack" and shaving handles huh ;) Personally I am a Gen X'er so those who follow are all just little 'script kiddies' anyway

1337, looks like the word "leet" which was originally "Elite". 1337 was the shortened or "elite" version of the word elite.

and it cost me around $150 ... with repaint since i do paint and bodywork... i would do it to any car for roughly $750

thants exactly right. but another good point was made, he was probably just aiming for the word elite... but a more elite version of the word.
He wants his car to look cool and he is entitled to use any words he wants. As for pictures, if he had pictures he would have answered half of his questions.

oh and since the handle is in the middle of a body line that is about 6 hours of work per side.... not just any bodyworker can do it... it takes a lot of skill... and the pics are with just 80 grit and a straight file... talk about skills....

Do you work at a body shop in Dayton? The only place that I hear of that does good body work is Nubar's, but I don't have any experience with them. I would love to start by getting my trunk shaved, that shouldn't be nearly as hard right?

PS Have you been to www.DaytonSubies.com yet?

BoostdScubaru,
that looks really nice...and I see you axed the antenna while you were at it! Did you replace it with something else or go satellite?
And I know around here having that much work done and then a full car repaint is a WHOLE bunch more than 750. But I am too close to washington DC and most things are ridiculous.

Bryan: Around here, you're best off taking your car to Kent Island Auto Body. A fleet of mini-truckers works there and they can shave ANYTHING.

Kent Island...thats not exactly around here...now is it ;)
Truthfully if I was going to do something like this I would go up to my father in laws in PA and pay him to do it. The work he does on street rods is unreal and shaving some door handles would be a walk in the park for him.

Isn't that the same guy that ruined your street rod?
| BryanH | 03-04-2005 11:46 AM |
yeah, yeah, yeah...but he is also the one that built most of it. And he does great metal work.

Perhaps we can buy him a book on how to keep the oil in the engine while driving it =)

is this thread about my mirrors ...? no if you ricer pieces knew that the stock mirrors flop around at 162 mph then you would understand why i put different mirrors on... you gonna whine about my mirrors? my subaru is in the process of pushing 750 HP so i dont think my mirrors , or my taillights for that matter , will be an issue.... and if you really wanna be technical about it they are more like amg mirrors.... anyway back on f$#%#$ topic... i am doing a full repaint... with a full repaint it would probably cost you about $2200 but you would be glad that you only paid that for my paint work.... shaving the trunk is a half hour job at that... the antenna , i think, is ugly and cheap...my buddy and i work out of his garage.. we just do it on the side...

I don't think he was being negative...I was trying to figure out the type of mirrors as well. They don't look bad!
I would love to see it when you are done.

Whoa calm down man! :)
First, I don't think we're "ricer pieces." I recently moved to the subaru platform from an e36 3-series. I was heavily in the BMW community and know that the e36 m3 mirrors are a common, popular upgrade for non-M 3-series. Your mirrors just looked similar so I was just trying to confirm.
