stock shifter sucks!
I dont know about you, but I think the stock shifter sucks! I have an 05 wrx any one have some ideas on whether to buy a subaru short shift or is there a better one?

Kartboy + bushings
Kartboy + bushings
WORD, I did this mod last month, night & day difference.
ned4spd04wrx 12-18-2004 02:34 PM

Does this change the notchy feel of the stock? also are these easy to install?
skyhawk 12-18-2004 02:42 PM

Actually the stock felt sloppy to me going into gear. After the kartboy and bushings, it felt more precise going into gear. As for install, the hardest part for the SS was removing the center console. The bushings are easy as pie. You do them from under the car and you don't even have to jack the car. There are instructions on scoobymods.com
m1bbb 12-18-2004 03:23 PM

Why not just buy a STI short shift ????
skyhawk 12-18-2004 03:32 PM

$$$$$ and an easier install. Just my opinion though. Spend your money where you want though. Even with an STI SS, some people would recommend changing the bushings to Kartboy bushings.

Yeah, for me it seems that the stock shifter is very slippery. I personally like a notchy shift. I cant stand driving audis bc of the slop they put in them.

Integra type r
Ford SHO

Then you need the Kartboy bushings.
express_wagon 12-18-2004 05:39 PM

taking the console out is definitely not the hardest part...that literally takes 8 seconds.

hardest part is either the bushings (because of crawling under an already low car) or setting the shifter into its socket (just need a nice rubber mallet).

That's the point I was trying to make. It is all easy. Nothing to this was hard, at least for me. Anyone can do it, that is the point I was trying to make. ;)
Why not just buy a STI short shift ????
Mostly because a LOT of people don't like how the STi shifter retains near stock height. The throws are definitely shorter and crisper, but some people just like a short nubby shifter height, and the Kartboy gives that.

That said, I really like my STi shifter, and my friend's Cobb double adjustable in his LGT is pretty sweet, too.
garie 12-19-2004 09:15 AM

shifter bushings like the kartboy one(i have that and the SS), or get cheap ones on ebay.. search for "wrx bushing"

the bushing will get rid of some of the slop in shifts...but you might feel this will make it even more notchier.
criz 12-19-2004 06:41 PM

i did the STi SS + kartboy bushings and I would recommend it to anyone...

it is the ****

I'm running an STi short throw kit with KB bushings. Shift feel seems pretty good to me.
txl146 12-19-2004 07:13 PM

mine felt even notchier with Kartboy shifter
Crump 12-20-2004 12:31 AM

this may be a stupid question, but does the factory shift knob screw right on the kartboy? i tried to put a momo shift knob on my car which fit on my friends wrx w/ a sti short throw, and it would not screw on my stock shifter.
Crump 12-20-2004 12:48 AM

BTw where are you guys getting the kartboy shifter and bushings? What is the place to get the best deal on one?
kennyvb 12-20-2004 02:25 AM

OT but why is your user name "ned4spd04wrx" if you have an 05?
Rex_Guy 12-20-2004 10:42 AM

I have the cobb double adjusting ss/bushings and its awsome.
darknightohio 12-20-2004 10:43 AM

Is the cobb ss better than the Kartboy ss?

If anyone has had to deal with subaru of america you know they suck. So instead of dealing with them I decided to just get a new WRX. My 04 I purchased with a nice discount. Then the paint got all ****ed up! It was literally coming off when i would wash it. So before anyone could notice I traded my car in for a 05 which I pay more for, but well worth it!
Crump 12-21-2004 12:00 AM

ok, thanks for the info.
Butt Dyno 12-21-2004 12:02 AM

I had the Kartboy and loved it. I swapped it out for the STi SS to be stock-class legal. I have the bushings and the knuckleball. You can't go wrong either way. The knuckleball offsets some of the height of the STi SS.

Kartboy shifter is great, came with a tee shirt too. Shift knob screws on. Drove an '05 last week and forgot how much difference it makes.
DJ_STI 12-21-2004 08:30 AM

Yea i got a kb ss recently too, and i love it.

I had the Kartboy bushings on my old '00 OBS, and now I'm looking to do the same upgrade on my WRX. Is there any known difference between the genuine article and the Ebay version? (not trying to take business away from the Kartboy folks, just trying to be informed)

Thanks,
Stephen

hit luke (aka stricklydriven) up in the vendor forum. got my ss and bushings for a killer deal.
hardest part is either the bushings (because of crawling under an already low car) or setting the shifter into its socket (just need a nice rubber mallet).
I have two friends who installed the KB SS who both said that getting the shifter into its socket was the most difficult thing... I just installed one this weekend in my STi, and it was simple. The plastic socket that the ball fits into is removable, so you take it out, put the ball in it, and then reinstall it. Simple. I was wondering, is the WRX not like this, or (if it's like the STi) do people not know to remove the snap ring and pull the socket out?
