Cool ideas for DIY sidemarkers? part 1

Cool ideas for DIY sidemarkers?

Orange sidemarkers = sucks.

What are some ideas y'all have for DIY projects involving modding or replacing them?

Spray-tint is one idea. quick, easy, and makes it tolerable by at least darkening the tint.

I like the STi vents that replace the sidemarkers, and I could prolly put something together that would look like that.

Any other ideas? I really want to change the look of my car, and this is one way that would really help. Remember, DIY is the word.

Since they are not all together useful, I have seen one set of orange ones that someone painted completely black. I think that would look pretty cool if you have rally/uk300/JDM spec lights...

sidemarkers

For my sidemarkers I just sanded the stock orange ones until the writing/lettering on them was gone. Then I simply sprayed them with special adhesive spray and then with black spray paint. The color scheme on my car is basically black and blue so it looks really good. Maybe there could be a DIY of using some sort of screen over the holes, that would look kinda cool...maybe?!

Man... dang that was confusing...

Need to clear this up...

The Green circle is NOT sidemarkers, they are corner lights... cuz sidemarkers can BLINK, corners cannot

The Blue circle is what sidemarkers really is...

Not trying to be a Jack@$$ or anything... but so many people get confused... if you call corners sidemarkers, what are sidemarkers?

I think we (south of the border people) go ahead and call them sidemarkers because, correct me if I'm wrong, US-spec cars don't have a second 'official' sidemarker. All we have is the diamond-shaped corner light, so we go ahead and call it a sidemarker.

If I'm wrong, that means I got a faulty car that is missing sidemarkers....

For US Spec cars, the owner's manual, page 11-57, does indeed refer to the green circled lights as sidemarkers. What does your manual say?

Thanks,

Hey, where did you get your amber sidemarkers? I've been searching for some OEM ones and just cannot find any!

Thanks

Vivid Racing has em, also carry clear and blue...they call em side indicators.....

I'd wire up the corner lights with the blinkers. Amber lenses there look good on a Blue WRX anyway.

Wow I'm glad we don't have those 'side markers'
IggDawg 05-23-2002 05:37 PM

I ended up just spray-tinting mine. looks damn good actually. I'l post a picture when I can. just 5 bucks for a can-o-tint at the hobby store. sweet deal.

How about a flush, or only slighty bulgy version?

That was sooo easy..I just took a can of rc spray tint I had and used it

It's so sweet looking too...the one that the flash lit up is orange and the one the flash didn't hit is still black :D

Is it legal to remove these and replace them with the CF STi piece?

One more thing, there are pieces that replace that other than the Zerosports CR "scoop" and the CF STi piece. I have seen them in WRB on a UK car. They look a small intake with three "slits," and are only about $40.
b_tapper 05-23-2002 09:25 PM

It's not like they do anything, they are just on when the parking lights are on. Spray tint them...they function normally at night and look better than that ugly amber in the day.

GRR second Correction!

The STi Unit is NOT a replacement
It is simply a few layers of CF (very thin) that
Cover the sidemarkers...
I've seen them in person
I know a few people who have them here in d-town

not worth the $125+ imho

i thought you take off the fender lights and stick the sti cf one there with double sided tape  seems to me they would stick out pretty far if they just tape onto the stock fenderlights...

I wish I had suck....sigh

I LOVE the way that spray tint turned out!!! I'm doing it tomorrow!

Yeah, that really cleans up the front end. There is also a translucent silver paint....
Wyzard 05-24-2002 12:24 PM

Silver tint? What kind is it and would you just spray it over the amber(as with the black)? that'd look great on my silver baby...
Either silver or Blue...any blue tint out there?
IggDawg 05-24-2002 12:30 PM

I think he means spray-silver for the headlight cluster tuning signal bulbs. get orange bulbs and spray them with a light coat of silver. the orange should shine thorugh, and it should still look mostly silver. a bit of orange may show through, but it'll look mostly silver..... much better than the big orange filter anyways.

I love the look of the tinted corner markers on a black car. Which is why I did that on my black vw golf. Too bad it didn't pass inspection. Apperently the light has to be visible from so many feet. Something to do with the candle power of the lamp or something. No idea other then the fact that I failed inspection just cause of that. Luckily it came off with alcohol and was back on the next day (after I passed). Just a word of caution unless you know a friendly mechanic to inspect your car.
b_tapper 05-24-2002 12:47 PM

I can only figure out 2 ways to make the sidemarkers come on..the parking lights and when they flash when the alarm is armed and disarmed. I don't care my care just got inspected, I have a whole year to wait anyways. They even passed my car with the leaky exhaust and the hella supertones. I know those hellas aren't legal and usually they'll fail you with those...guess you just have to know the right people :p

Brian
Wyzard 05-24-2002 02:19 PM

The silver 'tint' that I was asking about isn't for the 'headlight mod' but for the 'corner' lights...I'd really like blue but if there was silver out there.....

BTW I'm going to try the headlight mod this weekend...already have the silverst... bulbs...should be interesting...going to search now to see how hot to pre-heat oven......

your front badge color is almost identical to mine...what did you use...i used monokote radio controlled model airplane paint...
b_tapper 05-24-2002 02:35 PM

Tamiya TS-50 paint...it's made for their Subaru WRC kits, so it's a perfect wrblue match.

FWIW, in some states (NH is one), removing the side clearance markers is illegal.

Just wanted input for anybody who blacked-out their lights, how well do they show up at night/day time?

I have morettes, and I wired up my side markers to blink with my turn signal because it's very difficult to see a turn signal on the morettes, and I have the clear sides, which I like, but I just can't find a good orange bulb for them. So the black out idea with the stock orange crossed my mind, but I wasn't sure how visible the light still is (since I need mine for function, as I consider it a safety concern on my car.)

Thanks!

Illumination is still pretty good - mine are wired to work as blinkers as well:

did you paint your wheels? or is that powder coating? looks good
QAboy 05-09-2003 12:31 PM

I was thinking about getting a set of clear ones and basically doing the balck headlight mod to them. Open them up paint the reflector black and reseal them. This would make them match my headlight really well. but right now I've just got black painted stockers.

They're painted. They looked good for a long time, but then I had to have two valve stems replaced and they got beat to heck in that process. I'm getting a new rim/wheel package soon - I may refinish these and keep them for winter tires. Or I may refinish and sell to someone who just needs some autox beaters.

--eric
This is what I thought of doing, except tiniting instead of blacking them out.

Then I decided that the stockers weren't useful at all, so may as well try and save a few bucks and see what happends when I just paint them black. I kinda like the way the orange shines through at night.

I did it back in October, and just now it's starting to dull a bit and could use a respray. This time I may get a can of MPB and use that to make it match the car better.

Monochromatic, body colored is teh win!
