Curious as to Perception

Hypothetically...if I went to a pro or tour event and beat say Bob Tunnel once...(not saying I could but I would give it a hella uva try)...Would it be perceived as Luck...since it was only once...or maybe it wasn't Bob's 'type' of course...or would the perception as to "my" driving be perceived as "Wow, Bill can Drive"...or "Dude, you just got lucky"...or "Dayam...you beat a multl-national champion...
Just Curious..

IMHO, a lot of people give no credit till someone gets a jacket. Thats BS as I know better drivers then me who don't have jackets.
I voted for a combination of
"Dayum Bill, You must can Drive"
and
"you're lucky"
But not the "never will happen again" type, but a "bob must not have had a good drive, or you drove like a madman" type of lucky.
Autox is driving skill, car prep, and a lot of luck.

All courses are Bob's type, he is that good. Of course winning by cones doesn't cut it. You beat any of the top drivers straight up and you can brag.

What's probably the most important answer... is your very own to this question Bill.
The fastest guys get & stay the fastest because they KNOW/PERCEIVE/BELIEVE they are the best...that they will generally come to ANY event with the express intent of beating everyone else in their class minus the uncontrollable variables of the day.
Perhaps this hypothetical first "win" is all some people need to eclipse their own mental barriers.

I always like to be humble if I do well in another region but you have to be proud that you did so well. There are a lot of factors to autoX and you have to not sell yourself short. If it happens then you did it, that's it. My goal is to try to have a "T" next to my name in the results, I don't plan on getting first but I'd like to be able to trophy.

Luck in the fact your car lasts the whole season without issues ;) . There are a lot of good drivers in my region who's cars crapped out on them or they didn't have a car this year and drove 6 different cars in 6 different class all at different preparedness levels.

Sometimes the difference between the top people and the 2nd tier is just consistency. However, with regard to someone's potential, a person who has a really good result every now and then probably has more potential for being great than someone who is very consistent but off the pace.

It depends on just how bad Bob Tunnel drove. You could get second to last place and still have beat him without driving particularly well. :D

I beat Neal Sapp once (local autocross at UMCP in 1997).
I beat Dean Sapp once (Oscoda ProSolo 2001).
I beat Pat Salerno once (NEDivs 1997).
I beat Chris Lindberg once (Oscoda ProSolo 2002).
I still suck. I know Lindberg had an off day the time I beat him; he'd coned all his Saturday morning runs, and then it rained. <shrug>
Some people are delusional, that's all I'll say on the subject.

If you beat Tunnell in anything, including a shopping cart, you can drive. He's legendary. Did you see his times in San Diego this weekend? If he stays in that car this year, he will be VERY tough to beat.

Ya, off days are what seperate us from the National level drivers. They don't have them (do not bring up Mark Daddio and the North Coarse either) liek us regular guys do. For them they have an off day once in a very great while, for us we have a great day (perfect or nearly perfect run) once in a very great while.
I don't think all jacket winners are great drivers nor do I think you have to have a jacket to be a great driver. How many jackets does Brian Mattucci have?
Hmm, I think I am digressing here. If you beat a National level driver and he/she brought their "A" game then you have something to brag about.

I paxed within 4/10's of Carpenter at a local event...I was in STX in a N'A powered RS...and he was in a FSP Scirroco...
I have beaten some other "names" but its not fair to list them as were in totally different classes...
If I am the one...I say Vic Sais, or Bob Tunnel would be my target...Superman is always a good local target for me...too..
