for everyone that owns a race car. part 1

spazegun2213 07-03-2006 05:51 PM

for everyone that owns a race car.
How do you all test something? Like the car was supttering at the last event (i mean something pretty serious). Do you all ever run the car on public roads just to see if all you changes worked?

I'm not talking setup changes to suspension or whatnot, but more serious things. I just bought my race car and I have had my share of problems with it. While i try to fix them I wonder if they are actually fixed, and not pay $200+ to see if the the problem is fixed at the track?

thanks

If you need a light testing environment, why not spend $20 to try it at a local autox?

I suppose it depends mostly upon the problem and what circumstances that are required to duplicate the problem in order to give proper advice though. :)

When something like this comes up, I have brought the car to the local drag strip also... $10-$20 lots of passes...

Jon
Spectre23 07-03-2006 06:17 PM

The company I work for has a track-side garage for such things :D
fliz 07-03-2006 06:26 PM

My race (rally) car is required to be street legal...so I just test it out on the road.
racerjon1 07-03-2006 06:26 PM

Till you get a problem that only happens under load... (which is where a dyno is also good)

Jon
spazegun2213 07-03-2006 06:31 PM

sweet, those are all great ideas!!! as i said, the car is new, so i think I'll start hitting up the drag stripp to test things :)
REX8 07-03-2006 06:31 PM

For a small-car...a good sized, off the road parking lot will do. Just make it quick...

Autox and the strip are probably a better idea...

What kind of car are we talking about?
racerjon1 07-03-2006 06:47 PM

yea I have done some parking lot testing as well.. I used to work at a firestone that was in front of a wal-mart.. finishing the racecar at 12am wasn't unheard of, and it was common for the lot to be empty. (before it was open 24 hours)

I am not sure what the world record is for speed in a wal-mart parking lot, but I am pretty sure I own it.

They (wal-mart) can have it on tape, so go ask them and post video.

I register mine for this very reason. My last race car I didn't register and also had the same problem. Luckily it was a tried and true Impreza L that had like 200k and never had a mechanical issue even after tons and tons of track days.

The thing is, they might have it on tape, but they also shut off all the lights in the parking lot... so it isn't going to show much. (BTW, dark parking lot + Formula Ford is exciting)

On a registered racecar note, I had a county ordinance officer look at the same formula ford and tell me "you can't have an unregistered car here, you have to register this"

ROFL!!! thats great, like you can register THAT car.

I have an 84 944, and with the paint and the exhaust, EVERYONE knows its a race car.. oh that and the number on the side gives it away as well, lol!!

Still though, the world record fast lap in a walmart parking lot... dude, thats GREAT, lol   :disco:
racerjon1 07-03-2006 10:18 PM

Yea.. that's what I told him.. that and also "Um.. the shortest first gear I have is 55mph, the speed limit on the road there is 25.. the car will run like crap if i try to drive it 25mph.." he didn't seem to care.. told me I needed to get it registered.

So I call my insurance company, and it goes like this:

Me: Yes I would like to add a car to my insurance, so I can register it.
Agent: Ok, what make car?
Me: Van Diemen
Her: A what?
Me: A Van Diemen.
Her: Who makes that?
Me: That is who makes it, Van Diemen, it's a car builder.
Her: Well what model is it?
Me: RF83
Her: A what?
Me: it is a Van Diemen RF83, a Formula Ford.
Her: What is that?
Me: A race car.. but some stupid code enforcement guy says I have to register it, so I need insurance.."
Her: We can't insure a racecar
Me: I didn't figure so.. can you send me a letter that says that..

Some of the newer "gated" communities require all cars to be registered, then again they say you can't park trailers on your driveway either, so go figure, communism at it's best!

blue blurr 07-03-2006 11:49 PM

I'll just drive it around my neighborhood, but if I actually need to step on it there is this great business park 4 minutes away from my house that is empty on the weekends. Sometimes I will bring the suby out there and have some fun :)
racerjon1 07-03-2006 11:55 PM

This was an older neighborhood, not gated, I was renting (along with another racer) and never saw any kind of guidelines, turns out one of the neighbors was not enthused with the racecar in the carport, or me and friends working on cars in the driveway, and called the county people on us.. county of course has regulations about unregister/licensed cars, so they tried to get me on that.

I spent $12 on a county ordinance book, and found where there was an exemption for racecars.. It really was a crazy ordeal, they tried to pin a whole list of stuff on me (salvage yard, running a business (garage) in a residential area, unlicensed vehicles, etc)

Really I wish I could have registered the Formula Ford.. then I could hold the speed record for a residential area and Wal Mart :D

haha, so true, turns out it was something that i could not have fixed at the track (there were a number of problems).

Still.. where did you test your car myles? wait, yours was "street legal" right?
DILLIGAF Racing 07-04-2006 01:48 PM

We usually just drive the cars around the block. If we take them farther, and get pulled over by the police its no big deal, since we know all the cops.
Subaru_555 07-04-2006 01:57 PM

Has anyone ever been pulled over or fined for driving their non-street legal race cars? hahah that would be soo funny, not to the owner though. Look at the riced out BMW with the wing. No son that's a BMW touring car.

Street Legal...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

yeah right. No under dash, no side windows, obvious lexan flapping, chattery twin plate Porsche Motorsport clutch, both rear wheels chirping from the 85% shimmed rear end, floating rotors sounded like a rap drummer warming up, 1 seat, only fogs , because I gutted the pop up headlights ( worth 45 lbs FYI), and EMCO gears.

NOT BY A LONG SHOT !! I took it out at night time, the local cops knew me, and knew I instructed SS, CIA, and FBI guys at SUmmit when I first started instructing and most liked the car. My fogs were very bright and "passed" for headlights down in the fibre glass bumper.

Go out of RT 100 and do my thing, beading brakes, tuning the Motec(kinda), until I could get to the track in the instructors sessions. Now that we have a shop at Gasoline Alley we get 2 days a month track time.

You are now at the next level, first thing first, get rid of the crazy graphics, so you can do things like this. They were someone else ideas on what a racecar should look like anyway,...and they draw attention you dont need. But now you are at the point where you have to really get creative to make this thing work for you.

In your defense, VA is very different from Maryland and those cops down there REALLY have it out for anyone with even a brake light out, let alone a looud car, or graphics, or anything relaly. So I can only imagine what you are going thru.

I could ask Jon Milledge about your problem and he could prob tell 5 things for you to look for.

let me know, I am available.

Myles ( aka 944 turbo guy)

Same as some of the above responses. I take it around the block when there are less cars out. I have a dealership "30 day" tag with no date that I put on it. I figured it can't hurt.

Mine certainly looks the part but is entirely road legal (passes emissions, more or less noise ordiances, has all working blinkers, etc) and I don't get any flak about it.

Definitely gets lots of looks though. Jon K above had it for a couple of days in SC and got to experience that firsthand. "Man, this thing gets more attention than the Formula Ford on a trailer!"

Communism would be where each gated community has one trailer and everybody gets to share it.
elgorey 07-05-2006 11:09 AM

my SM is sort-of legal, in that it currently has an up to date emissions and state inspection, registration, and insurance.
The emissions and state inspection definately wont be able to renew, but Ill probably still drive it around the block when I need to. It really sucks wasting a track session to bed in brakes
I have taken it out on the local roads to debug some problems. Not fun though, car is all stickered up, vinyled lights, gutted, race clutch and sounds like the coming of the bumblebee apocalypse

-mike[/QUOTE]welcome to HOA hell. Here in No. VA, thats all we have, unless you want to buy a house built 35 years ago (and even a lot of those neighborhoods have converted to HOA)
I was about to buy a nice new 2 car garage townhouse, but when I called the HOA to ask about parking trailers, the lady acted like I asked if I could torture cats on the front lawn and post their heads on pikes.
trhoppe 07-05-2006 11:27 AM

I also taped up my headlights with black tape instead of yellow like it was. That way if a cop passes me the other way or something, it at least looks like I have riced out headlights instead of "no" headlights.

That blows. One good thing about NYC where I live, I can pretty much park anything. Heck I have my 22ft boat on the trailer on the street in front of my house! We used to work on 5 or 6 subarus at a time on the street in front of my house. I got a ticket for the trailer once since there is an ordinance that you can't have a trailer un-attached to a tow vehicle parked on the street, but other than that no issues.

My Dad used to race Mini Coopers back in the late 60's, early 70's in South Africa.

They used to work on them at my grandad's place. One time he wanted to test out some motor work, so he took the thing for a spin round the block. Sunday morning, about 8:00 am in a nice quiet enighborhood. Problem was those uncorked Mini's were loud. The neighbors had a lynch mob going until the cops showed up. Bad juju.

We got "pulled over" driving a 400 lb, 120 hp formula car TO the parking lot we were going to practice in with it...

Its only about a 2 mile drive, we ususally tow it, but couldn't find the straps, so I volunteered to take it over in between two real cars driven by friends...

Cop says: "You've got to be kidding me right???" (this is an OPEN-WHEEL, 400 lb (SMALL) car...)

Made us throw it on the trailer for the remaining 1000 ft to the lot...(almost made it!)

Then they came by and watched us drive for the next few hours...

(I'm sure I have the record for a few parking lots as well, Walmart not being one of them  )

It sounds like they were going to practice, but it wasn't a sanctioned event. The USC SAE team used to do the same thing I think.. go find the um, "emptiest" parking lot on campus and test the car.
