Custom Gauge Pod In Progress

Here my custom gauge pod that i'm in the process of finishing. I wish I took pics from the very beginning to show the entire process. The face of the pod is angled to get a perfect view of the gauges. This is the main reason I did not go with a Defi or ATI pod. The Carbon Concepts angled pod is simply too expensive! So I made my own!
The first couple pics look a little crude, buts its shaping up very nice.
The big question...What color should I paint it?

hmmm... i don't know. i think i would leave it that unfinished, fiberglass color!
i would do it to either a) match your interior trim (radio bezel, vents, etc) or b) match the stock, grey dash. :)

Cover it with some carbon fiber cloth. Still cheaper than buying one that is made of carbon fiber.

Thats a very good idea and I have thought about it. The only thing is, the carbon fiber weave is expensive and I would neet to buy gel coat and enough supplies to cover a trial and error process.

they make a carbon fiber vinyl i have it on my doors, and in my trunk. It comes in differnt colors, silver, blue, red, yellow, blue and black. check out my home page. I have pics on the 2nd and 3rd page. Hope this helps

Paint it to match the body color of your car... But don't stop there, bring that exterior color in to some more places.

I finally decided on a color. Went to Advance Auto and found a color that comes close to matching the interior trim. Its actually Duplicolor bumper trim paint.

Looks good, just hope you don't get any sun glare off of the gauges.
| paperchasin | 07-04-2004 12:59 PM |
^^Exactly....now i know why the defi pod had the little bit of "hangover" to prevent this...

I don't have any problems with sun glare. There is an issue at night with the gauges reflecting off the windshield. I just may hood it when I get a chance.

You did a very good job on making something out of fiberglass. Definately take some skill to do it this well. How did you manage to make the round part (three quarter circles) on the top of the gauge pod?
Good work,
Oleg

Thanks for the compliments.
I wish I would have thought about taking pics in the early stages, oh well.
To get the rounded part, I cut the 3 quarter circles out of cardboard and I made 3 rows of them. Each one I made progressively smaller in size to taper downward. I then used tape to provide the shape. After that, fiberglass is applied.

Thanks for the compliments everyone.
The gauges are Omori 60mm gauges with fully adjustable backlight technology. I purchased them from J-Spec Tuning. The third gauge(oil press) is on backorder.

Love the pod. Looks very clean. I like how it faces you and not straight or towards the passenger.

That is the reason why I refused to pay $150 for a Defi that you can't see head on!

What did you spray the gauge pod with? Doesn't look like spray cans, do you have a spray gun or did you goto a shop?
The paint looks very nice, and it looks much better with the hood.

I actually did spray it with spray cans. I used Duplicolor gray primer, Duplicolor bumper/trim paint for the base coat, and several coats of Duplicolor clear coat. Thanks for the compliment.
