Custom V1 Stealth Install part 1

PhatheadWRX 08-05-2003 03:33 PM

Custom V1 Stealth Install
I started out by cutting a whole in the trim left of the cup holder to place the V1 Stealth Dispaly (takes all visual alerts off of V1 detector, so it is less obvious to traffic), but I still had that huge detector suction cup mounted to the winshield which was very noticible.

So I decided to mount the unit to the useless center visor. Drilled some holes, stacked some washers to get the unit angle corrent and here is the finished product. The unit is MUCH harder to see even when walking infront of the parked car.

Sorry for the GREAT picture quality had to use my old camera.

Ive been thinking of doing this SAME THING for a while with the remote display - how did you mount the remote in there? how's it attached? Did you dremel the hole??

Looks great man!

I however, would leave the V1 suction cupped, just hidden behind the mirror just far enough to the right that it can "see" you the rear window.
PhatheadWRX 08-05-2003 04:12 PM

I just pulled out the trim piece, dremmeled out the piece. Take your time and make sure you make the initial cut small.

The actual install was EASY! I found that the display sits almost flush with the air vents if you install here. Just double stick tape it, run wires and you are done!

I really lucked out that the double tape worked. Good luck

Why do people hide their radar detectors?

Are they illegal in your state?

Theft?
PhatheadWRX 08-05-2003 05:01 PM

Mainly for theft (I spent ~$420 on the V1 and dispaly), not illegal in Florida.

Also so people don't mooch off you on the Interstate.
MAD REX 08-05-2003 05:04 PM

Thanks for the clarification :)
ha-evolution 08-05-2003 05:21 PM

Good job - looks good.

[QUOTE]Why do people hide their radar detectors?[/QUOTE]

some cops don't like the fact that you have one because supposedly it means you are going to speed. I'm gettign my hardwire for my Escort Passport 8500 today and doing the same thing only no drilling into anything.
MAD REX 08-05-2003 06:56 PM

So you mean they pull you over for having a radar even though you're not speeding? Just to bust your balls
2.5RSMatt 08-05-2003 08:15 PM

they wont pull you over for having one but having one shows that (in their minds) you will or have been speeding and they keep an eye on you more than if you didn't have one. Not all cops are like this but some are.

I just got done hardwiring mine to my dome light and now it's out of sight.

God knows, that center visor [I]is[/I] useless! What was, and is, Subaru thinking on that one?
Mulder 08-05-2003 09:51 PM

I agree that visor is useless so I went one step further and removed it completely, and mounted the V1 directly to the roof-

That is what I was gonna try but I counldn't drill through that darn metal visor mount. And I like the fact that the suction mount you can adjust the angle by pushing the V1 foreward and back.

That visor is one of the most important things on your roof! It's not supposed to block the sun it blocks the glare from the roof lights so you won't crash and die at night.
ha-evolution 08-06-2003 06:07 AM

I've never been hasseled by a cop for having a radar detector. In fact the last three or four times I have been pulled over I got warnings and my radar detector was in plain view.

I agree that the visor bracket is very tough to drill through, it did take a long time. Fortunately I have two of them so I wasn't afraid to take a chance of ruining one. As for angle adjustment I don't need it. The unit sits at a good angle and since I have the remote display I don't have to look up at it.

No you are all wrong. The center visor is a [b]VERY[/b] important structural brace. That is the reason the wrx was not offered with a sunroof. Removing this visor will weaken your roof and subaru will not be responsible if you [i]DIE[/i] in a rollover.

Jeeeeeeshhh!!!! I will [B]never[/B] forget all that BS talk about how the sunroof wasn't available because of structural reasons. Meanwhile it's on WRXs in other countries, and then the '04 WRX comes along, and it has one. What a joke. LOL, LOL, LOL!!!!

Sweet install Phat...

My wife just got me a V1 for my birthday...
(you have to know she's a keeper!)

Was wondering if the remote display auto-dims like the built-in display on the V1 does...I'm thinking of mounting a remote display somewhere where I don't have to turn my head to see the display and be able to drive at the same time...
alphamale 08-12-2003 03:05 PM

The built-in display auto-dim? I have a V1, and I don't think mine does that.

May I be the first to say, That looks ghetto to me. if you have to butcher the dash, drill screw and washer, the center visor(worthless or not) to me you end up with a bunch of wasted dash plastic with an unpleasing appearance IMO.

sorry.

My V1 definitely dims the display at night and gets brighter during the day (or when there's an oncoming car)...not sure if this is a new thing for them or not...I think it is pretty cool...:D
Mulder 08-12-2003 07:18 PM

My remote display auto-dims. It is the older one but there I assume the current one does it as well.

[QUOTE][i]Originally posted by mulder [/i]

Is there some kind of setting for this, or does it just do it? I dunno, maybe mine is already doing it.
Mulder 08-12-2003 09:45 PM

It should just do it. The remote display duplicates all the functions of the main unit, including dimming. It's kind of subtle unless you are looking at it right when the intensity changes. If you look at the display carefully you'll see a small round window where the photosensor is that detects the ambient light level, put your finger over that window in daylight and the display will darken, point a flashlight at it in the dark and it will get brighter.

I don't think it looks ghetto...ghetto to me would be wires all over the place in plain sight...i.e. not hard wiring the detector to the map lights, and Phat did a good job hiding the wire running to the remote display...ghetto would also have the display stuck to the center console with 2-sided tape...The recessed install is definitely nice, and it looks like Phat has the skill to become a plastic surgeon (no pun intended) to cut lines that straight with a dremel...

Buying a new center console cover and new center visor is relatively cheap when (god forbid) you get rid of the car...I do think the center visor is useless...in the 4 or 5 times I've actually needed to use it over the past year, it wasn't quite long enough to actually block the sun...maybe I just need to upgrade to the STi version of the center visior...I hear its a little longer and only costs $130...

I had my first interlude with the police with the V1 yesterday...back country road I like to take to work, hilly w/many s-turns (the WRX likes those) and 30 MPH posted...It was the first time on this road with the V1 and I'm still in the learning where all the 'false alarms' are, so I wasn't going that fast (40-45)...I got a weak K signal and thought it was going to be the post office up ahead giving a false alarm...2 hills and 3 turns later (about 1/4 mile) the signal really started to pick up...sure enough cop in the woods where I would have never seen him otherwise. I can't believe the sensitivity of the thing...I was literally 3 blind turns and 2 hills up and down away and I got signal...my old Bel detector wouldn't have gone off until I came around that last turn and he would have been reading my speed at the same time...

I think I'm going to LOVE this V1!!!

Oh it's nice alright. I've had it for years and it has saved me many times. It has payed for itself over and over and over again. I just wish laser jammers were cheaper, as there's a lot of laser guns here in Maryland.

One complaint about the V1 is the ergonomics. It's really time, after about 10 years, that they stepped up to the plate and made an additional model with better ergonomics, i.e. smaller, rounded cased. That thing is too bricky. They also ought to come out with a built in with remote sensors, so that you don't have to put it on your dash. Oh, one more thing: there ought to be a setting where you can have it auto mute after a certain amount of time so that you don't have to listen to the same signal forever. I know, you can push the button, but you still have to reach over and do it - mine's on the passenger side.

On a happy note, it's nice that it hasn't gone through major systme improvements every year, leaving people like me with older units obsolete and out in the cold.

Check this out [URL=http://www.valentineone.com/lab/MikesLabRpt3.asp]How to reprogram your V1[/URL]

Also Rhk: my fav story was the other day on my favorite road to cruise on right near the beach, flat, open, 55. I normally do a good bit over 55, so I get a Ka band so I know that something is up and keep looking and looking, finially I saw the culprit one of the new Mustang GTs around town had someone pulled over.

The crazy thing is that the V1 started to pick it up over 3 miles away!!!!! that is crazy. I love this thing!
RSEnigma 08-14-2003 11:59 PM

sweet dudes, they look good. my friend Hitokiri and i hardwired ours in our GC's. he's got a V1 and i hav a passport. we didn't get quite that elaborate tho. i'm still running the suction cups but they're right above the mirror and can barely be seen from outside and Hito's using the visor clip and just slipped it up into the headliner. we both ran the wires along the headliner and down the pillar then tapped into the cig lighter. kinda related....i'm gona try and set up a spot in the recession right infront of the shifter for my cell charger. kinda hav the charger "nipple" sticking out of the plastic housing so that the phone clicks into it and lies flat on the bottom. anyone done this?

Something simialr, I ran my cell ear piece under all the center console, just the plug sits in the "tray" abd the wire runs out from under on drivers side of console and I just set it in the cup holder. No big deal at all I just can't stand the darn wires everywhere.
rhk118 08-15-2003 12:39 PM

V1 installed!
Got my V1 hardwired to the map lights and used the sunvisor-clip actually up over the headliner...looks sweet , but can't figure out how to post pics on this BB for the life of me...

Thanks mulder but I don't have that 'attach file' button at the bottom of my posting's page and have never been able to post pics to this site...and don't have a private webpage to set links to...The instructions you referred to said if that option is disabled please don't bother the administrators about it...and they've never gotten back to me when I tried to get 'permission' to post pics like just about anyone else can...

In any event, I couldn't post the pic here so I put it up over on i-club. Unfortunately after several attempts and multiple edits whenever I post an I-club address this system, NASIOC automatically overwrites '[url]www.[/url] i-club .com' (had to put spaces in there to prevent the overwrite) with 'forums.nasioc.com' so I guess there IS a little bad blood between the two sites as comes up occasionally on posts I read. You'll have to remove the spaces from the following link to get to it...

[url]http://www.[/url] i- club .com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28582

I'm sure like all of you all I do this BB stuff because I love my WRX and like making it individual through mods and like to see what others have done, learn from their experiences, and share my own...

In any event this will be my last post to this site...guys thanks for the pics and info and best of luck with your cars...I will only be participating at the "other" site from now on...

It doesn't look ghetto, but it looks a littlle out of place. It doesn't quiet match the lines of the interior. And this is from a person that is going to install a TT beside the cup holder, go figure? Either way, it's great handy work and most important of all no tickets!

My point in posting that link was so that you would see attachments here are not possible. The option was available a long time ago but all the attachments began slowing down the server severely so it was turned off. Anytime you see pics in a post here they are being hosted online someplace else and linked to from here using IMG tags as explained in the FAQ.
As for the i-club --> nasioc filter it isn't because of bad blood. It's done so that if someone posts a link to an old thread from before the i-club/nasioc split, the link will be valid.
rhk118 08-15-2003 01:53 PM

Mulder...again thanks for the explanation...I made a new post over there and it still writes over my link...maybe they're recycling older post #'s which is causing the overwrite...

It was still a serious waste of time trying to figure that out...
Mulder 08-15-2003 02:07 PM

The filter is universal, it will always change i-club to nasioc. It isn't selective based on post date or anything. I was just explaining why it's there in the first place :)
