Do I need hood pins?! part 1

WRXmckenzie12 08-03-2006 10:41 PM

Do I need hood pins?!
I just ordered a Seibon Carbon Fiber OEM Hood for my 05 WRX and I was wondering if I need hood pins? I have no idea what they do, how to install them, or if they are needed at all. I searched without much luck......thanks to all who reply.
Suby.LOVE 08-03-2006 10:44 PM

No you do not need them, but they are recommended. They have to drill like 2 holes in your hood and some part of the bumper (?) not sure if its the bumper..
caesar 08-03-2006 10:50 PM

U dont need them.I have a Seibon CWll CF hood with no hood pins.Highway commute every day.No issues till this day.I was gonna get some pins but decided not to deal w/the drilling and stuff.Make sure the hood fits nice and tight tho....... :D

I have the vis oem carbon fiber hood. I installed sparco hood pins in mine, the main issue i was having,is at highway speeds it would flutter alot. Once in a while it would pop up and i would have to pull over and push it back down. it's alot safer. Mine doesn't hardly move at all now,and they look good too. I drilled the holes for the hood pins in the cross beam that your hood latch is attached to,then marked on the hood where they hit and drilled up thru.it takes about 2 hours, start with a small drill bit first as a pilot then use a larger one.takes some time getting the opening right and the height adjustment right.
RS drifter 08-04-2006 12:58 AM

the two indentations under the hood where the hood height adjustment stops (rubber thingys) are located will facilitate installing hood pins... pins are recommended because sometimes the area between the latch loop and fiberglass can weaken over time...

i've had my Seibon CW CF hood for some time now.. numerous road trips w/ over 100MPH and have never needed hood pins. it only shakes a lot on some freeways where the road is really bumpy
living4surf 08-04-2006 01:35 AM

i have the seibon hood on mine and with out the pins there was a lot of movement but with them in now the hood doesnt move at all at like 90mph. i just felt better with them after i saw how much the hood moved at highway speeds
JiveMasterT 08-04-2006 10:23 AM

All it takes is a smashed windshield to realize... you need hoodpins.

Sure they aren't exactly pretty and are kind of a pain to put on... but on a CF hood I would definitely recommend them so that you don't end up with a huge problem.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

what he said.

On a side note, I drove 139 once, and my stock wrx hood was wobbling all over the place (toward the windshield). It was scary how much the hood flexed at that speed. But admitedly, I almost never drive that fast.
WRXmckenzie12 08-05-2006 03:18 AM

So I guess I still don't have an answer, some people have no problems and one guys shows me his damaged hood and cracked windshield :( . I do have more questions though, where's a good place to get them, is there smaller ones that won't look as bad, and can i get them professionally installed at a shop? Thanks.
THEW0RX 08-05-2006 03:28 AM

I think i've seen some that are flush with the hood and unlock with a key. May have been dreaming...i don't know. some one will chime in on this.
runwrxrun 08-05-2006 04:05 AM

CF hoods for WRXs/STIs are a complete waste of money -basically for show only. Any CF hood weighs about the same as stock for our makes. Should've spent that kind of money on a CF trunk lid in which weight savings are significant. But its your car so just giving a heads up.

Oh and be careful when drilling those holes. the hood may crack if you drill to big of a hole to begin with.

yup, they're called chapman locks... you can actually find them at Autozone or Pep boys and they sit flush with the hood... good call.

WRXmckenzie12 08-05-2006 02:11 PM

The only reason I got this hood is because I got hail damage on my current hood and the cheapest solution was to get a CF hood. Plus I think they look really good on black cars as opposed to other cars, I didn't get it to save weight. Thanks for the other replies though.
timpreza5 08-05-2006 02:23 PM

i'd recommend hood pins, i have a Seibon CF hood and it's pretty bouncy wouncy over 60+ mph

thats funny because my stock hood (although i have a '00 Impreza) weighs like ten times more than my CF, and my trunk feels light as a feather
RedlineWRX04 08-05-2006 04:28 PM

seriously, id just man up and get the hood pins. Take it to your local body shop and pay them to install them. Its not worth replacing your windshield. I got my seibon cf hood and 2 days after i put the pins on. Looks better and you dont have any worries.
bahboy20 08-05-2006 07:30 PM

pins
i have a cf hood and got the pins after a while because there was too much movement. also to be sure that latch doesnt brake apart from the hood, its a good idea in my mind, so if the latch snaps off the hood, there is a safety so the hood wont immediately smash into the windshield.

I would probably stick to the normal hood pins, not the ones with the keys.

What would happen with the key hood locks if you lose the key or the lock mechanism jams or gets f'ed up? you cant open the hood, right?

sparco are sick, if you have the horsepower to back it up its sick, otherwise its all show. IF you have a front mount get one without a hoodscoop. Its lighter than the rs hood since its not made witht the same material as the wrx/sti. But the just my .02$
theicewall 08-05-2006 07:47 PM

Dont get Ebay hood pins. Most are crap and will rust.
JiveMasterT 08-05-2006 09:06 PM

I got these for my car back when I had a GSX...

http://www.performancebodies.com/store/product.asp?dept%5Fid=820&pf%5Fid=010102

(if the link doesn't work, just go to the site and look under fasteners)

Basically they are anodized aluminum and the color does fade after a long time and the screws and pins that come with the kit will eventually rust. They are incredibly cheap though and there is a lot you can do with them to make them nice.

Pictured above, I ordered a small, thin sheet of carbon fiber and I cut it out and epoxied it to the scuff plate. After that, I get new small screws and used black rustoleum on them and put them in.

Not pictured above, but something else to consider is if your pins start to rust, instead of replacing them, take the rings off the pins and clean the rust off then use some small heatshrink on them and then put the rings back on. I mean the pins don't actually rust, it's just the rings around them that do.

I also use a peice of brake cable from an old bike (used to ride bmx so I had it laying around) and I used that to make lanyards for the pins because it helps keep people from stealing them and/or prevents them from flying out on the highway. I used to have people comment on how nice they were all the time.

All in all, I think I spent like $25 on the whole project (~$10 for pins, ~10 for CF sheet, ~$5 huge box of screws).

Hope this helps.

I have been looking at these for my stock hood because it moves way too much for comfort at speed. They look way better than pins and are lockable.

I just got Seibon CW CF hood also. Is it doing ok when you going above 130mph on the freeway. Because I don't want to put the hood pin on my hood. I scare people will take some thing out from my car and it doesn't looks good at all. It just safety.

Yeah I like those. I should be getting a set too. YOU GUYS ALSO HAVE TO REMEBER that the latch is in fiberglass and as it vibrates it will crack. May take 6 months may take 2 years. I wouldnt take a chance. $40 to $80 in hoodpins to install. Or the price of a new hood, windsheild and a new pair of underwear when you crap your pants on the highway, because you cant see for those few seconds :D
StealthfishWRX 08-07-2006 04:10 AM

nop, the air from the scoop is takin so you will not need one.

Try lifting your trunk lid when its not installed on your car. Trust me it isn't 'light as a feather'. Its not you that's buff or your trunk lid that's 'light as a feather'; its the trunk lid springs that make you feel like superman, buddy

And maybe the WRX/STI hoods are made out of aluminum. Seems like you don't have either model.
  ;) :o

the hoodpins.com style is pretty sweet...im not too big a fan of hoodpins, but after see the hops my hood does at 90, i'm not risking it anymore
nerrad5 08-10-2006 01:42 AM

I just installed my cf hood with hood pins. I definetly recommend them. As for the hood bounce, I didnt like how much there was while drive around town. Im sure my firmer suspension setup doesnt help. I installed some one inch aluminum strap under the hood to stiffen it, and it is a lot better. Doesnt bounce anywhere near what it used to. It is two straps in a "V" formation from the front, opening up to the back so it doesnt block the hood scoop opening. And it is screwed in 5 spots causing the straps to arc like a leaf spring so it is always keeping slight pressure upwards. Ill try to post a pic when I get a chance.
WRXmckenzie12 08-10-2006 01:45 AM

Thanks, that would be great. I think I've decided to get them anyways :)
Farnk 08-10-2006 02:24 AM

Had a friend with a cf hood on his accord. Then it popped up on the highway and flew off his car, almost hitting my other friends in the car behind him. I think you need them.
WRXmckenzie12 08-10-2006 08:55 PM

I got a price quote from rallitek, where I wanted to get them put on, and they told me $90  just to put them on. That seems like way to much to me, anybody else get these put on? What did you pay? Cause if it cost that much then i'll do it myself...
theicewall 08-10-2006 10:30 PM

Just mark up the spots and drill the holes. I wouldnt pay more than $30 for installation.
nerrad5 08-10-2006 10:41 PM

thats too much money to have them installed. Just do them yourself. It takes between 1 to 2 hours. Take your time. Drill with new bits. pilot bit first. Dont rush the drilling, let the bit do the work. Spin at slow, controlled speeds so you dont splinter the CF.

I installed my pins first. Actually one at a time. Get one pin in, dont worry about the height of the pin yet. Put a small dab of grease on the top of the pin and lower the hood down untill it touches. There is where you drill your pilot hole. Remove the first pin and do the same on the otherside. Remove both pins and close hood. Drill down now on the pilot hole with the final size bit. Nice and slow. After both holes are done, open hood and install pins. Still dont worry about height yet. Close hood. Now position the hood pin pins (I guess, the half that mounts to the top of the hood) Get them setup evenly so they are at the same angle/position on both sides. Pilot hole for the screws to hold these in place. DO NOT use an electric driver to drive the screws in. Use a good old screw driver so you can FEEL when they are tight.

I set the height of my pins so I have to push slightly on the hood to get the pin to slide into the pin. That way there is a nice snug fit.

Take your $90 and buy more parts for your car.
