liigod 06-02-2003 08:56 PM

are the canards fiberglass? that hood scoop is impressive, you should post a step by step process of it. once again, great job to a glassing god :disco:

You rock at making your own stuff!
scobaru 06-03-2003 12:35 AM

wow thats a really nice job how did u learn how to make stuff like that>? u could try to make your own body kit :p but yah awesome job
jerome02rs 06-03-2003 12:52 AM

There are lots of different ways of making parts. I made some carbon fiber fenders for a Mazda/Ralt CSR sports racer by using the following method:

1) Cut shape out of blue foam (available at Home Depot)
2) Cover with mylar packing tape
3) Cover with fiberglass and then smooth out with body filler
4) Paint- this is now the pattern
5) Apply mold release to the pattern and apply fiberglass to make a female
mold
6) Apply mold release to the female mold and then start fiberglassing- when it's dry remove the finished part from the mold

It's actually pretty simple to do it just takes time!
Vision 06-03-2003 12:56 AM

very nice!
Bobalouy 06-03-2003 01:07 AM

Cool, nice job, I made a roof scoop a few years back, with a similar process. But I just covered the foam then poped it out and that was my scoop. No female mold.

I wanted to try a hood scoop, and gauge pod but I couldn't figure out how to get the edges nice and rounded. I guess makeing the female mold wold have helped.

Did you use a bunch of small peices of fiberglass, or did you use full pieces of cloth, layered up.?

That's kick a$$. :D

I've wanted to try my hand @ moulding stuff like that. :)

wow, thats clean! nice work
jaypride 06-03-2003 09:14 AM

That is nice. You should sell some. I'd buy one if I were keeping my WRX.
tvrvic 06-03-2003 09:34 AM

Awesome look. I don't really like it on the STi but I like it on your car...

I think I would like it on mine too :D , you should make a few to sell, count me in on it. :)

Did you use the STi style splitter or stock with it?
Hazdaz 06-03-2003 10:13 AM

I think it looks better than the "real" deal - not as periscope-lookin as the STi one.

You still have that mold?
jedimaster71472 06-03-2003 11:42 AM

Nice looking stuff- you are exceptionally good with teh fiberglass!
kenchan 06-03-2003 12:50 PM

very original and nice job! :D looks good too, doesn't look
'home made' at all.
WuWrx 06-03-2003 02:48 PM

looks good

Thanks for all the props everyone. The canards are made out of fiber glass and foam to. I do not have a mold. This scoop is what you would call the original plug. What I did was Start with a 4 inch chunk of sign foam. I got it from a sign shop. It will not melt when fiber glass is applyed. It is also very hard but it sands pretty easy with 40 grit. I drew the shape for the base off of the factory hood then just started sanding. First with grinders to ruff it out Then with a air long board sander and lots of hand sanding. After I made it out of foam I started laying fiberglass Many layers Many aplications Sanding in between Layers. After it was all sanded I used some body filler to fil in the pen holes and imperfections. Then prime sand prime sand then paint. It was a long prosses. I would say about 200-250 Hours Start to finish. Took me about 4 months to build. All winter. The canards were the first thing I made then a made the scoop. It was my first big project. My background is 2 year cominity collage in auto body tech. 3 year working as a body man and painter. I learned a lot working at a hot rod shop at night when i was going to school. I as now a salesman but cars are my passion. Sorry so long.

Ps I do not have any manufacturing background. I would maybe like to sell them but I would need a mold made. My prosses is not cost efective at all too much labor. I am open to Ideas or propasitions from a manufactur. I don't know if I could give up my original scoop though. I do not want to make another one.
Hazdaz 06-03-2003 07:45 PM

Dude, if you already have the actual part (and it does look good) - you can make a negative mold from that "fairly" easily, which can then be used to make more of thsoe scoops.

I honestly would be quite interested in buying one of them - espescially if it would let in more air in (can't tell if its taller than the stock scoop).

I just can't seem to warm up to that STi one - way too tall.
pleue 06-03-2003 08:51 PM

looks good. looks like giant samco pipes in the backround hehe.
phat pat 06-03-2003 09:13 PM

The pictures do not do justice of how big it is. It is about 3.5 inches tall. About as big a the 04 STI but more round and not as boxy. It does get lots more air.

I think I would have to make a 2 piece mold but not sure. Not much experianse with molds. I tried to make a mold of the boost selinoid cover out of plaster paris For a carbon fiber one. That did not go well. Long story but I did make 1 carbon cover. Hade to break the mold. Yes I did use mold release.

I though those huge colored pipes where a cool background.
imprezive one 06-04-2003 02:13 AM

woah, that is kickassssss! nice job!
Bobalouy 06-04-2003 09:38 AM

there was a pritty good tutorial online about making a 2 peice mold, I'll have to find it again. How did you attach it to the car? do you have skrews inlayed in the fiberglass?

Anthony C
phat pat 06-04-2003 05:50 PM

The scoop is attached with the 2 factory plastic clips on the sides. Just srewed them in to the fibergass. Then It is held on by 3m Double sided tape. The tape is all the way around it. My buddy said it would fly off and hit the windsheild. I new it would hold. Road test at a little over 120 mph.
Bobalouy 06-04-2003 05:58 PM

yeah double stick is great, my roof scoop has stayed on for about 4 years.

Very well done.
phat pat 06-05-2003 05:39 PM

Does any one know of a place the would manufactor my scoop if I sent it to them.
Dr. WOT 06-06-2003 09:37 AM

Excellent work!!! Be careful about trying to produce those... from what I've seen it usually ends in disaster. Tons of work for minimal profit and a customer service nightmare.
phat pat 06-06-2003 12:08 PM

Yes I have noticed that to on different small Idems that people have made. If I did do it I would want to just contract the manufacturing process out to a experinced company. And then maybe distribute them threw some sube vendors. I don't know just a thought.

PS I kind of like knowing I have the only one in existance.
Puckaveli 06-06-2003 12:11 PM

Contact shawn at AFS Motorsports they do a lot of replica stuff.
