Drag Racing Sti part 1

SoloSTI 05-08-2006 05:36 AM

Drag Racing Sti
I have an 04 STI with slick tires (all 4, Kumho S700). It is completely stock except for an intake and downpipe. If I drag race my car will I break the transmission? Differential? I am worried because there is no Subaru Dealer on Guam.

Any information on how these parts will fair when drag raced?

Thanks

If you can't afford to replace parts, don't race. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Of course racing in any way, shape or form will carry the risk of destroying one part or another.

That being said, the drivetrain on the STi is pretty solid, but in no way indestructable.

IMHO, you don't need slicks to drag race a stock STi. Put your street tires on, go run it a time or two, then see how it goes. If your local track's surface is poor and you spin badly on the stock tires, maybe then try the slicks.
waktasz 05-08-2006 08:50 AM

You probably want less sticky tires for drag at stock levels. You want a bit of wheelspin at the start to avoid bogging down or being really hard on the tranny/axels/etc.
Evil STI 05-08-2006 05:38 PM

Slicks on an STI at the dragstrip will definitely help snap your driveshafts and/or grenade your rear end. It's not a requirement.

Like others said you don't need slicks unless you're at 450hp+ level AND upgraded gears. Stock STI tires will actually do better if you are inexperienced AWD car drag racer. If you decide to race despite the fact that you will be having troubles fixing your car, make sure that you add some air to you tires, I'd say make it 35-40psi all around and when you launch don't dump the clutch at 5K RPM, instead slip it, but not too much to burn it .. well, kinda hard to explain, so just practise keeping what was said above in mind. Good luck.

I regularly race my car at the autox that is why I have slicks. I do not have the factory tires anymore. I have Yokohama ADVAN's if I put those on will it work? or I need to buy just regular street tires? Any suggestions? The fastest I have run when my car had 2K miles on it was 13.9 sec. that was after 3 runs

Thanks
Aleksey 05-09-2006 11:10 AM

Pretty much any V rated or higher street tires will do, just don't mix them. :)

What 'slicks' do you have? R-comps or actual slicks? Either way, you'll probably be better off on the Yoko's than those super sticky tires at the drag strip.

What RPM should I launch my 04 STI? What RPM should I shift each gear??

What mods do I need to make my STI run in the 12 second range????

A dp.

Then you should be able to get in the 12s as long as its not 95 degrees and extreamly humid. What were your 60 foot times last time you went?

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I've gotta ask... If you have experience autocrossing your car, which is the kind of activity it was designed for, why would you just want to drive it in a straight line? I just don't get it... A car with such exceptional handling, excellent balance, great brakes, and a 10 to 1 weight to power ratio is VERY competitive at an autoX, or on a road course. Why would you want to compete with cars that can't go around a corner?
Aleksey 06-09-2006 01:16 AM

Dragrace and autocross are like apple and orange. They are both juicy and tasty in their own way. Don't try to compare them, just have a bite. ;)
Guam STI 06-09-2006 02:14 AM

I used to autocross a Miata and had all the support from alignment specs. to springs, sway bar, etc. and the car did well. However since I bought my STI it is so much different and not that much info on set-ups that have been proven or combination of parts to make it drive better. My brothers Evo handles in my opinion so much better. The only 2 forms of racing we have on Guam is the Autocross (not very organized) and a drag strip which is very organized.
Howl 06-09-2006 09:58 AM

Think of it this way:

In simplistic terms lets say a typical street tire can in a hard launch situation can handle the equivilant of 75hp per tire before it starts to spin. A racing slick in the same situation might be able to handle 150hp per tire.

On a typical 300hp 2WD car the street tires will start spinning at about half the cars potential power. Therefore, a serious racer will use tire that will handle 150hp each so he can get the maximum amount of power to the ground.

A 300hp AWD car you can (theoretically) get all 300hp to the ground using the street tires. The slicks will allow you to get up to 600hp to the ground before they start to spin.

The other thing is: it's a lot cheaper to spin your tires than it is to fix your tranny. You want to be sure your tires are the weakest link.

The biggest key with autoxing a Subaru is getting enough front grip. Lowering the car too much will throw the camber curve off and make any efforts seem futile in trying to acquire appropriate grip. Typically a fat lot of static camber is required. Exact amounts depending upon the rest of one's setup of course. :)

How much are those Kumho S700's
Guam STI 06-10-2006 12:06 AM
How much are those Kumho S700's
I bought those for $600 I ran them at an autocross once for approximately 6 runs.

They are for sale for $450 for 4 + shipping or best offer. I have now installed the Yokohama Advans and thats what I used at the drags and autocross since it's been raining. The S700 are far more better in the dry.

It is hot and humid on Guam

14.3664 1/4 mile
2.0632 60ft
96.69 MPH 1/4 mile

this was the best I could do out of 6 runs the others were more of a mess 14.7 sec.
2.25 60ft
91.26 MPH 1/4 mile

Any suggestions????
