driving school recommendation in/around MD

All, I just got my car tweaked to oblivion, and would like to know how to drive it properly for rallyx/rally. What are some highly recommended schools/instructors around the Maryland area you would recommend? I am not looking to be "competetive", I am looking to have as much fun as my car will let me without completely wrecking it, so any place in the middle of any pack would be awesome for me. With this in mind, I also am not looking for some million dollar race instructor, as I am not trying to be the next guy from 'Napolis all famous like.
edit: O yeah, I dont wanna crash while daily driving either, so some tarmac time would help too. Please note I drive very responsibly, so this isnt a request for "how does i xcapz da coppers"!

Both clubs have great drivers who'll take you for a ride and/or ride with you and share their "secrets" with you. And there are others north of us; somebody up there will share info on that soon...
And just so you know, "tweaked to oblivion" may not be the best car to rallycross. You may want to share what you've done, so we can tell you whether you're good to go or not.

Attend as many Rallycross and autocross events as you can. Cost of school will pay for a whole season. Just have fun.

Mmm, I sent oneil an email today. Curious to find out if they do driver/codriver training as well as basic school. It would seem to be the case.

Not exactly next door but, Paul Eklund has a great basic Rally Driving School www.get-primitive.com he runs out in Hillsboro, OR. He and other Rally drivers are the instructors. Not expensive at $195 for 2 1/2 days, including a Sunday RallyCross. You can even fly in and rent one of his prepared rally cars and still be way less then O'Neil. Not as glam. as O'Neil but if your not looking to contend at the next X-Games, or even if you are, it may a good fit.
I'm hoping to go to one of his schools next year.

Scandia, that would be fantastic, but hell if I know when I will have time to go to OR. I will definitely think about it anyway, since I am putting their undercarriage plates on anyway.

call me and we can spend about 6 hrs together on a saturday and I can get you to a point where you understand basics like
"seating and hand position"
"looking where you want to go"
"being aware of whats going on around you."
"the basic line"
"threashold braking"
"being smooth"
blah, blah, blah......
One thing I know, the students who have spent the time BEFORE they went to Summit Point ..are sooooo far ahead of the other "first timers"....and that allows them to have fun sooner too !!
Then we can go down to Allsports on a nice cold day when there is NO grip and work on being smooth and carry speed etc.......
Maybe even sit you in front of the 65inch HD with force feedback wheel and turn off ALL the aids on the AUdi R8 at the Nurb and have you drive it over and over and over............;)
All in all, there are ways to be super prepared BEFORE you go do something like what you want to do.........................
It all equals seat time and working towards a goal/objective.
So the offer is out there.

If you want to make a few bucks and free lunch, I might be interested.
I'm looking to start going to HPDE's and autox events next season and want to get a head start.

I would NOT charge anyone who wants help. No one charged me. Jon Winter took me out in his track prepped 944 turbo back in 94 and helped me make the transition from 240whp front drive Jetta to a 375 whp 944 turbo,..both weighed the SAME !! HE spent 3 weekends with me on back roads and plain street driving and it was priceless. I have mad offers on these boards in the past and only one person took me up on it( took him 4 years at that,...cough"capt crunch"..lol) .but none the less, he finally did do it.
So maybe a ham and cheese samich' and a diet coke in exchange for some help behind the wheel. I get more from "giving back" than anything else. My neighbor went from track day to SCCA spec racer with a 3rd place in 1 year and I felt good about that. He made his dreams come true with 2 races !!
So let me know. Somewhere between my son, wife, business, doing automotive launches and goofing off,.I can make the time for anyone.

hey guys...
i think your time spent with myles would be well spent.
We will be doing our own driving/instruction/fun days this coming year... (dates are being determined)....
I am working on the instructors being professional driver's that I raced with... so they arent cocky wanna-be porsche club guys etc... I have had many an experience where the guys that think they are hotshoes at DE days get stuck as instructors for other's, and they really have no business doing so...
I will be arranging some of these days with Myles/RCE so we can all have a good time together.
until then.... listen to myles, the basics are the most important....

For rally 'type' schools/classes on the east coast that will let you run a non caged car you are very limited.
Team O'Neil (TO) will let your run your car in winter classes, which are a great (and a very unforgiving) way to learn how your car behaves on loose surfaces. 295.00 for one day, 700.00ish for two day. (prices not confirmd for 07 yet)
Here is a special TO deal run by the New England Suabru Club, Inc:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1163233
TO also has a one day rally experience class for ~500.00 that is run on gravel in their preped cars.
There is a school in Fla (European Rally i think) that may let you run a non caged car but not 100% sure on that.
Cheers

Well Eric and Megan( thread starters) took me up on my offer. I apologize for a late start. With my Panoz race coming up next weekend and my busy schedule it wasnt easy getting together with you guys, but thanks for bearing with lack of voice today.
We spent about 2 hours on back roads( driving slow) and working on what I said we would work on which is BASICS. HAnd position, looking far ahead, brake/turn/gas.
We worked on HOW to practice these things on the street at regular speeds so it is second nature. Megan really got the hand position / shuffle steering thing down and I can see her gaining ALOT from that in the future. Eric showed good speed as far as carrying speed, but I think the basics are needed, and I know for a fact that autocrossing and a couple of HPDE will help ALOT.
I know you guys want to do rallycross, and I think that is great , but more basics are needed and more time spent working in the smooth transitions from gas/clutch/brake. Working up to real time speed with these is crucial for any type of motorsports.
We did this in my 2.2 OBS , or Project Grocery Getter as we call it . THis car has NO power and alot of everthing else. Excellent training tool.
Again, I am glad I could help and I hope you guys( Megan and Eric) cme away with a goood feeling of what to work on. IF you have any questions, let me know, e-mail or call. We live close by so its no problem to stop by the shop and we take a quick 15 minute drive etc.
Again, autocross and get as much seat time as possible.

I have this thing about the "affordable" statement. Invest 1 dollar per 4 dollars of mods......now knowing what I know from yesterday, you can afford it. What I do know is this. I have sat next to ALOT of drivers(including the guy that drove the championship winning Skyline in JGTC in 2003, see the Scoobiesport article I wrote) and few are naturals, most need the basics and alot of it esp since it stays with you until you go to the big paddock in the sky....lol.
I would say rallycross before an HPDE or Autocross season is prob not a good idea,..OR just not a good progression.

Nod, no doubt. However, autocrossing is more a means by which we are looking to get experience driving on tarmac. We are planning to go up to Team O come spring time, and thats already a hefty bit of money already for 2 three day courses. :) Plus, we are in the process of opening a restaraunt, so both time and money are at a premium for us. Right now I am waiting on word back from Brian, but our first and foremost desire is to get the cars dirty :)

the value of having car control experience on tarmac goes far beyond having fun. I still have a letter from a mom of 4 who found her self in a tank slapper after avoiding a STOPPED car on 495 in the rain. She said that she made 8 corrections each side after avoiding the car. She had all her kids in the ,..yes Excursion. I think its about 5 turns lock to lock in those things.
Point is, get the basics. I see it all the time. People spend 10 k on the car and complain about how much a driving school cost. The driver is the one variable that goes from car to car, situation to situaton, th driver could someday explain to his kids, how to drive. The car wont. THe car will be wrecked, or not wrecked, sold or not sold, modded or not modded.

Not particularly sure when VIR started up again. We are setting up a weekday session in Aberdeen, but thats a very long drive from you.
Shameless plug, if you are from the PA/NJ area and looking to get some lessons done, we are making plans for a class at Aberdeen (Ripken Stadium) come begining of March. Check for details in the MAIC section.
edit: Myles, relax man! Affordable is relative, just like many things in life, as you pointed out yourself yesterday. Not everyone can shell out $10k or more for a variety of driving instruction. As mentioned, there are two goals we have in mind, but at no point was it mentioned we were not a. looking at all aspects available to us, and b. persuing the issue in a thoughtful and intelligent manner. I understand that you may have been burnt many times in the past being involved with knuckleheads who do not listen, but neither Megan nor myself are like that. Please do not take comments out of context or make assumptions, as we do listen to what is said to us and do act upon it.

I understand that you may have been burnt many times in the past being involved with knuckleheads who do not listen, but neither Megan nor myself are like that. Please do not take comments out of context or make assumptions, as we do listen to what is said to us and do act upon it.
I dont need to relax, I am not worked up, nor did I take any of it out of context. After 8 years of instructing I know and here all the responses. I have not been BURNT in the past,..remember someone who doesnt take helpful advice isnt burning me...LOL.

Shameless plug, if you are from the PA/NJ area and looking to get some lessons done, we are making plans for a class at Aberdeen (Ripken Stadium) come begining of March. Check for details in the MAIC section.
