El cheapo grande racing shoes :)
I figured the folks in here would be most interested in this. Eastbay.com has Nike driving shoes on an incredible clearance right now. I didn't even know Nike made driving shoes, but they do (or did, anyhow), and they're only $20 now. They're the real-deal, nomex lined, sued outers, super-sticky soles. They do seem to be designed with NASCAR in mind (as each shoe is licensed by a particular driver), but in my brief test-drive with them last night they worked well. They're not a very comfortable shoe, mind you, but I don't plan on wearing them very often anyhow.
Here are some pics:

If anyone does pick these up, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions.
Thanks,

Oh yeah? Cool... what's his e-mail addy? I wanted to compliment someone over there for their fantastic order processing. I placed my order at 10:00 pm on Friday night, and the shoes were at my doorstep on Monday afternoon! And that was with cheap shipping!

Well, I'll post a review of these shoes shortly, I just ordered a pair of 11's.

I bought a set and got them in Monday. I like 'em so far, nice fit and they were comfy on my ride home that night. Gonna try them karting tonight. Now to just get rid of the *ech* NASCAR number on them :D
| TimStevens | 08-29-2001 09:53 AM |
Let me know how they work... and whether you get that numbering off of there successfully! I may look to do the same :)
-tim
p.s. I wonder how much Nike paid to license those numbers we just want to get rid of! :D

Sizing
How did these shoes fit relative to a normal pair of running shoes? Same size, bigger, smaller?
| Idjiit | 08-29-2001 01:52 PM |
Nice! Nike's usually don't fit me very well, but for $20 it's worth a shot.
Does anyone know if Addidas has made a running shoe for anyone? I know Puma makes shoes for Sparco. The Sparcos I tried on didn't fit, although they weren't the Puma-branded ones. I have really narrow feet, with a wide toe box. More like flippers than feet.

Thanks for the tip Tim! Just ordered my size 14s. I've been trying to find driving shoes for awhile now. Looks like they'll have a little more sole than I would prefer, but I'm sure they're better than my current driving shoes-Chucky Taylor HiTops.

thanks a lot Tim! :) I always wanted a pair, but didn't want to spend over $175 (from sparcousa) for something that I only wear couple of times in a month. Can't wait for them to come in! :D

Wonder if I should order a second pair...

Cool!! Thanks man, just ordered mine up. I went for the blue ones.
That price is so good, someone should order about 20 pairs in various popular sizes and sell them for $40 a pop. You could make some quick money.

I'm a Chuck Taylor racer as well... They're getting mauled kart racing. The heel will blow fairly soon, since there's no reinforcement, and the kart pedals will likely chew through the sides eventually. Need some leather...
I must say though, the Nike will have to be pretty nice to make up for the inevitable loss in pedal feel. I might as well be wearing saran-wrap with the Chuck's on.

i just got mine over the weekend!! Damn they are nice and comfy for what I paid for! Thanks again!
| Idjiit | 09-05-2001 05:10 PM |
Got mine on Tuesday, went karting same afternoon. I'm pretty disappointed with them, but I didn't expect much from Nike. The "Air" pocket below the ball of my foot is ridiculous... Why is it there? I'm not jogging, I'm driving for Christ's sake! As if that wasn't bad enough, the sole is way too thick. On top of that, I either had them laced too tight or there's some weird pressure point going on because I couldn't feel my feet after a 12 minute run!
I haven't given up on them entirely yet, but for my big race tonight, I'm using the Chucks.
Thanks anyway for the link though, it was worth the 20 bucks to try them out! Anyone considering them, take my gripes with a grain of salt - different strokes for different folks! YMMV!

Yeah... the air pockets under there are really unnecessary, and I got a little numbness in my toes too, but I just attributed that to them being new. I really need to start wearing them around and breaking them in...
Regardless, they're much better than my sneakers, and cheaper too!

Oh, and don't forget that they're Nomex/Fireproof! Again, not as important for kart racing - but the fact that the laces are protected by the leather-over-lace design is cool as well.

These have been bouncing around on a couple other websites, and on the open track emailing list I subscribe too. The general consensus from the guys that had received their shoes already is that they're not really racing shoes, they're more like comfy paddock shoes or pit crew shoes. But, hey, for $20, why not pick up a pair?

Heheh, I got two pairs of those Nike pit shoes. They work great for playing volleyball! Very grippy on the boards, and the cushion "bump" in the front part is great for jumping and landing.
I did try driving in them once. I went back to my regular Nike sneakers instead. :p

I've had those Nike shoes for about 2 years. Eastbay ran that deal then too.
I can say that they take quite awhile to break in, but once they do they aren't as bad. I'll never call them comfortable, but they work well enough for autocrossing and they were only $20!
