People clambered over each other as they tried to avoid an out-of-control rally car yesterday.
Five spectators, including a young boy, were taken to hospital after the car flipped almost 30 metres into the crowd during the first stage of the Targa Rally near Waiuku, south of Auckland.
Official rally photographer Philip Adamson had to leap out of the way after the car's driver apparently misjudged a corner.
People standing behind tape in a designated spectator area ran and jumped out of the way but the car ploughed into them, he said.
"It sort of became obvious pretty quickly that he wasn't going to stop and people were clambering over each other to get out of the way.
"There was a lot of cuts and people were bleeding. The guy who'd taken the brunt of the hit was in a lot of pain."
Mr Adamson spoke to the driver after the crash and said he was "pretty mortified". If the driver hadn't deliberately steered into a bank, which slowed the car's momentum, he would have killed someone, Mr Adamson said.
Seven people, including the driver and co-driver of the car, were taken to Middlemore Hospital, two with serious injuries.
A hospital spokeswoman said four of the victims remained under observation last night in a stable condition, including the child, who was transferred to Starship children's hospital to be checked for head injuries.
Targa Promotions NZ marketing manager Shelley Lunny said safety precautions had been in place when the crash happened.
"Everyone is very shocked, it's not something anybody likes to happen."
Rally driver Joe McAndrew said wet conditions had made the road treacherous.
Generally spectators were kept out of dangerous areas on the rally, which made the accident even more surprising, McAndrew said.
"Crashing is part of rallying, normally it's into a tree or a fence. It's not a good part of rallying but it doesn't happen very often."
Taranaki man Paul Barnes walked away from being hit by a rally competitor who failed to take a hairpin corner in the Targa New Zealand race last October.
He said yesterday he didn't have an opinion on whether spectators were allowed too close to the action. But when he was injured he remembered seeing spectators packed into areas designed for cars to crash into if they went out of control.
"I'm not blaming anyone, but it is frustrating to see that sort of thing," Mr Barnes said.
The rally was the first of three Targa events. They are all run on closed public roads.
Police and Motorsport New Zealand are investigating the accident.

I wonder what the findings will be? Do you think the driver will be charged?
If it were here in the US there would be lawsuits galore plus an envroMENTAList protest as well :(

What is there to investigate? A rally car hit rally spectators during a rally stage.
Unfortunate as it may be, it seems pretty clear to me. :o

Well, they said safety precautions were in place, and people were behind the tape. Maybe the 'safety precautions' need to be revised.

Rally organiser Mike John said it appeared the victims had been in a cordoned-off area they were warned not to stand in when they were hit.
He did not know if they had been moving through the area or had returned after being told to move.

Unfortunately, you have a point.
If there were, there would be designated spectator areas nowhere near the action.

The only spectator areas would be the SuperSpecials and they would be viewed on some mega-screen video from a great distance.
There would probably be more lowyers in attendance than actual fans.

I think that was a statement to indicate that the people were "where they were supposed to be" or not "somewhere where they were not supposed to be".

Personally, whenever I watch a rally, I have at least two 'exit strategies'; places I know I can jump, run, duck, whatever if I see a car get out of shape.
But, thats just me.

The Super Stages at last years Rim of the World rally were a bit lame ... and the only place one was allowed to view actual rally competition. I guess the year before one of the jumps wasn't build correctly and some cars were landing nose down, hard. The main jump in front of the grandstand in '05 was pretty steep also, so the cars were slowing down quite a bit before hitting it ... not much air time. I don't blame the drivers. The most exciting thing was watching the photographers getting sprayed when the cars drove through the mud puddles.
The organizers made us shut down our little AX course during the Super Stages so that people would leave and go to the Super Stage grandstand. They aren't inviting us back this year. Who would have thought that watching AX'ing and getting AX rides would be competition for a National Rally!? (Apparently the lot owner was also charging the Rim organizers too much for "our" AX area.)

As a competitor, they were better than nothing, but not much. The course consisted of a short straight on tarmac parallel to the main front straight, followed by a 180 right onto the "oval" thru what I'd call turns 1 and 2 (one big turn) followed by the back striaght into turns 3 and 4 with the finish line in the middle of turn 4. We ran it 5 times all togeher IIRC, 2 of those times backwards. 40+ seconds per run. Not many more spectators there than you would expect at any other major spectator spot IMHO.

Super Specials are lame.
I've seen them at both Rim and Rally New Zealand, and they're only marginally more fun to watch than NASCAR.
I didn't even bother to go to the Super Specials at Mexico this year.
Stage spectating is what makes Rally, well, Rally

It was just an oval with a little squiggly at the beginning/end. Maybe a straightaway into a hairpin, then around the oval. That's probably the better way to describe it. Anyway, it was ok. The straightaways into the ends of the oval made for a nice long drift for the fastest guys.
