Very nice. Take some pics when they are on the car.
| deebo | 10-08-2004 05:46 PM |
that looks really good... what steps/precautions/products did you take... also did you clean them very well before you painted them? Contemplating doing that as well
| OCD-Speed | 10-08-2004 05:49 PM |
Nice wheels man they look great!

i only use the stock one for winter. It was kept in the storage room since the past spring so the OEM paint started to have cracks here and there. I've always wanted to paint those so i just figured get it painted and get ready for the winter.
i first used the simple green and then rinsed them all clean, then used sand paper to sand off the surface in following order: 220 grit, 350grit finally 1000 grit to smooth any bumps and uneveness. I actually used etching primer (for sticking to metallic surface). The gold paint i got is the plasticate engine paint, called universal gold. The gold is actually pretty bright, it gives a golden foil look. Don't worry though, the plasticate clear coat will darken the color a bit and give it a nice glossy finish.

yea i took the caps off before painting, don't like the colden caps. since the valves are push type so it won't seal up and i've already tested. To be honest, i've no idea how the gold stocks will look on a black car but oh well. I would have painted it to graphite or darker color i have have a silver or white car. I just want there to be some kind of contrast.

| silvscorp | 10-09-2004 12:45 AM |
plasticate engine paint, average 4 coats per wheel
| deebo | 10-09-2004 12:48 AM |
post if it starts to chip off or something to that effect
| skoobywrx | 10-09-2004 12:54 AM |

| John Sever | 10-09-2004 01:34 AM |
tape would have been put to good use on the valve stems:) other than that nice job!
way to not skimp on the prepping cause that is the key to a nice paint job

your valve stems should be fine. worse case, go to Wal Mart or something like that, and get a valve stem screw driver (should have new cores) and take it out. You'll need to fill the tires up, but not a big deal.
| FryRice | 10-09-2004 02:38 PM |
How long did you waited before you spray the clear coat?
| deebo | 10-09-2004 02:48 PM |
any new pics?

I'm interested to see pics of the wheels on the car.
Looks great so far!

Great paint job, I am impressed. BUT what happens when you need to change tires and they have to take the weights off to rebalance. I see you painted the weights as well. Ooops
| ChrisRC | 10-09-2004 06:25 PM |
The wheels are looking good. :disco:
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-09-2004 08:16 PM |
I see you did all four at the same time, what did you leave your car on during the process? Will cinder blocks at the jack points cut it, or did you by 4 jacks?
| eastcoastbumps | 10-09-2004 08:25 PM |
He mentions that these are his winter wheels half way through the thread.
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-09-2004 08:28 PM |
:( Musta skipped over that. I'm thinking about doing mine like that too and was wondering how I could hold the car up.

did you strip the original finish off the wheels before applying the primer?
| hangten93 | 10-09-2004 10:27 PM |
Read before u ask a question, he said that he used sand paper.
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-09-2004 10:29 PM |
How many cans of paint did you end up using, and how much was left, lets say I wanted to do more coats.
| silvscorp | 10-10-2004 12:08 PM |
I took the caps off befor painting, but didn't cover the valves cuz I know it will not cause any problem as I've done this many times, by painting my friend's wheels. I didn't take the weight off cuz I am not thinking of switching tires any sooner, again this is just for winter driving only.
I saw the wheel paint at local pepboys but didn't find the cold color. I think engine paint should stick fine since they are high temp rated. I didn't expect the paint should last long but just want it for a better look for now. I'll see what's gonna happen in the winter (worried about the salt). That's why I put on 3 coats of clear. Anyways, I think I am happy with the 3 and half hour job. I could have spent more time but just didn't bother.
for all 4 wheels I used 1 can of etching primer and 1 can of the plasticate paint.

looks great! Nice job.
| subiekid | 10-10-2004 07:48 PM |
little too blingy for me.
| silvscorp | 10-10-2004 11:51 PM |
those are actually some of my old wasted photos. I just sticked them in, some of them had some problems stay in place so i just double decked those to make it fit as tight as possible. You have to make them tight enough so the spray paint won't blow them away.
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-10-2004 11:52 PM |
Just painted 2 of mine, couldnt be happier.
| projectrally | 10-11-2004 01:24 PM |
so...total cost of all materials?
| silvscorp | 10-11-2004 04:04 PM |
total cost of materials, 20 bux
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-11-2004 04:06 PM |
2 cans of clear (10 bucks)
4 cans of paint (9 bucks)
1 Primer (3 bucks)

wow that's some cheap paint u got there, the one i got cost 4 something just for 1 can. but then again i painted all 4 with just 1 can lol
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-11-2004 07:18 PM |
I did 8 coats per wheel then 8 coats of clear. The costs are rough estimates and for effect.

Im thinkin about doin this to my stock wheels. Did you paint the inside of the wheels as well?
| Trunk_Monkey | 10-11-2004 09:50 PM |
Inside as in under the tire no, inside as in where the brake is, you really dont see it but I still sprayed a bit in there just in case anyone was picky.
| wrxsubaruwrx | 10-11-2004 10:15 PM |
I bought gold paint but ended up using bronze . I would alos like to see how they look on your car . Nice job too BTW :)
| silvscorp | 10-11-2004 10:19 PM |
depends on the clear coat you use, some clear coat will actually darken the color like in my case. I didn't like the cold but i know the clear colat will darken it to get some of those "bronze" look.
| Nicklbrso | 10-12-2004 01:52 PM |
What did you use to mask around the tires?
| Silent23 | 10-12-2004 02:35 PM |
