How bright is the turn signal though? If you reduce the distance at witch you see the signal then it could be a problem.
| sonicblue | 03-25-2003 01:31 PM |
So basically it's a "Koji" mod without painting the parking light area? Looks like a quality job and I applaud the innovation.
| Wrxified | 03-25-2003 02:02 PM |
Do you guys use hi-temp paint to do the headlight mod?
| Drew888 | 03-25-2003 02:30 PM |
The turn signal is very bright. Seems brighter than before, probably because the light is more focused. I painted the interior of the PVC with chrome paint first. I reused the orange turn signal cover. I simply cut it 1/16" larger in diameter than the PVC and pressed it in. A very tight fit.
The orange cover has two square areas that reflect the light sideways. I carefully aligned it so that it still does this.
To eliminate people not seeing me from the side completely I complemented the light mod by wiring up the side markers to blink with the turn signals. I covered all bases and it works great!
It's Koji style without painting the parking light part of the headlight and inserting of the old turn signal orange reflector.
High temp paint ...yes. I used whatever high temp engine paint the parts store had. I bought both gloss and flat and after a little testing the flat works much better.

Kudos, this looks fantastic! I do want to see what it would look like on a non-black car though, since the contrast between the colors would be greater.

looks good especially in the night shots

Thanks guys!
People have commented on the fact that this mod only takes about 3 hours. Oh NO...to do what I did and take your time (ok the first time doing anything takes longer) it takes about 7hrs.

Question, sorta unrelated:
Where'd you get the corner markers? The ones I got from procarparts fit decently enough, but the part of the marker above the actual bulb is clear and not, how would you say, textured to add reflectiveness. I like the way your's look more.

Very clean & creative work on the turnsignal portion, but IMO, painting the chrome bezel portion w/the parking light looks better.

Jeff,
We are Suby owners...no worries. I'll walk you through it whenever you are ready. It is really easy to do.
After doing it I would make some minor changes in the order things got painted and epoxied (sp?).
Aside from that it is only time consuming.

That looks awesome, I was thinking about doing the same thing (paint-wise), but not with the PVC.
Do you guys think leaving the stock orange bubble would leave the blinker bright enough from the side if painting the entire area behind it black? For instance, Drew88's got it figured out because he's got the sidemarkers wired up which is probably a good idea since the PVC won't allow for much of a side-view of the blinkers... but if instead of the PVC you just left the orange bubble, but painted everything as he did, would the blinker be very bright at all from the side?
this is main thing keeping me from doing this. I've got the STi sidemarkers so i don't have the sidemarkers to wire up. I'd love to do the "eyelid" type look, but without eyelids and without sacrificing visibility of the blinker from the sides.
anybody done this?

Sandkicker-
Can't say I can recall someone doing this mod and leaving the orange bulb cover. It's hard for me to envision how it would look color-wise on other cars to make a blanket statement, but I think it would look good on your black car (going to do the headlight in black, right?). As far as visibility, from what Drew said about the little triangular sections in the cover, sounds like leaving that piece on could only help visibility versus leaving it off. I say go for it - place them on your car after doing the paint job but before reassembling. If you don't like it, leave it off (and go orange bulb or that one that looks silver but illuminates orange) or add the PVC and make it a Koji-style mod and screw the visibility issue. I think it's kinda unlikely any po-po would give you isht for that anyway........
BTW, personally, I'm Koji-mod and sidemarkers wired up:

Thanks all for the positive comments. It was a long day and I'm very happy with it.
Sandkicker, Sonicblue is right...just go for it. With my mod and using the orange reflector I can see the turn signal very bright to about 45degrees if standing directly in front of the light from about 5 ft. away and walking around to the side of the car.
If you like the mod but 'need' to have visibility the same then maybe you could experiment by cutting out a little of the PVC only on the outside, or you could take a hacksaw or Dremel and shorten the overall length to allow more of the reflector to stick out.
If I were you I'd buy the STI fender blinker and drill a hole and wire it in. = best of both worlds
Good luck,
Drew

It'd be sweet to cut out the STi logo on the side and have the light shine out of that! Man that would be some tedious work..

Thanks for the info guys... i think i might fainlly do my headlights.
Drew888 I love the way you've painted them, that's exactly what I'd like to do, but I've been skeptical about painting the blinker area due to loss of brightness... but maybe with the PVC it'll all work out... or maybe I'll just put in a clear bulb that blinks orange.... not really a huge fan of the orange bubble, but with the PVC it looks good. ... decisions decisions...
What size of PVC is that? And how thick? Would be handy to know before pulling the lights out if i decide to go that route...
And... how hard is it to make the sidemarkers blink? Any instructions on this floating around? (probably a dumb question). I can't figure out why Subaru didn't do that from the get-go...
I guess if I do this and it's not bright enough from the sides, i'll just get some clear sidemarkers or put the orangies back in and wire 'em up.... now to find time to finally get around to doing this

The PVC section is called a 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" Schedule 40 bushing. I believe the 1 1/2" is the diameter and the 1 1/4" is the height (or depth, as it will be installed). When I got mine, it had a rim on one end that I had to cut off. I used my table saw to be sure I got a very straight, smooth cut. You don't have to use something so drastic, just get it as good as you can and place that end in the "socket" so you see the factory edge in front.

Careful Sonic 1/2 x 1/4 is kind of small :D
1 1/2 x 1 1/4
I also used the schedule 40 bushing but Koji didn't. I don't know what it's called but the SKU # is 034481062271. Instead of cutting off the small 'flange' on the end I used my Dremel (go get one if you don't already own one! Awesome addition to my toolbox!) , and a large/coarse sanding wheel and it came right off (sanded the outside so it kept the overall length...not really important though).
I would try to use Koji's piece if I were doing it again. My reasoning is the epoxy is a little difficult to work with and once glued in some will ooze out the side and after carefully wiping some off you will have to go back (after it's dry) and paint it black with a small brush (if you really want it clean). I didn't do this and if you get up real close you can see the epoxy. By using Koji's piece you have a thin flange around one end and when you are finished using the Dremel tool you are left with a piece that you can 'screw' into the 2 mounting holes used by the factory orange reflector (basically, no epoxy to be seen anywhere and you cover up the holes nicely).
The advantage to cutting up and using the factory orange reflector is that it has 2 square reflectors built into it that allow the light to shine off to the side.
Wiring in the side marker is just waaay to easy. 4 14" pieces of wire (one blk one red...as long as they differ) and 4 wire taps (recommend 'T' style blade taps) and some dielectric grease (to keep your exterior connections from corroding).
I am using clear side markers w/an orange bulb. I am keeping my eyes open for a brighter solution because during the day it isn't bright enough. Nighttime is ok.

Ya' got me! Edited........
Oh, and that SKU that Koji provides is regional - my Home Depot had no such item. Although the name may be different, I'm pretty sure the piece I used is as close as a match to his as you'll find. Either way, what I used worked very well. And you have to jam your nose into my lens if you want to even try to see my epoxy. Of course, I'm not encouraging people to be skimpy and duct tape it on or anything but just don't get overly wrapped up in the details. I made no allowances for side visibility of the blinker in the headlight itself. My sidemarkers are wired up but they're tinted with some Nite Shades. Nevertheless, no 5-0 has ever wanted to chat with me about it and I'm not really concerned about visibility. I know at night the sides shine plenty bright and they're reasonably bright in the day.
