I've heard (a rumor?) that Richard West totaled his STS Impreza RS during the Challenge rounds. Can someone update us on what happened? I know that a Z06 lost control on Saturday and hit some corner workers too -- the corner workers are evidently okay, but the Z06 was pretty messed up.
Please let us snowbound folk know what happened here.... this sounds like some scary stuff. :(

i didn't stick around for the challenge rounds but the zo6 stuff did happen! the Z06 driver spun out and slid off course and hit a couple workers, they were alright luckily! hope richard didn't wreck the RS & if he did he's alright.

All I heard today was that a car spun out into the fence on Saturday and that police and fire/rescue responded.

that was the extent of it on saturday afternoon with the Z06, looked much worse than it actually was.

What happened to the other WRX driver, Oliver? The SCCA results also show some DSQ's for a few of his runs on Saturday.
| kiko seibt | 03-03-2003 10:45 AM |
OK Guys here is our story, Oliver and I were both protested for having a " non stock vaccum fitting" and got our saturday runs disqualified, I was in first place and Oliver in 5, we were told that if we could get the stock piece we could run on sunday, so thanks to Chris Perera who loaned his fitting after completing his runs, we got to run and i won the class and oliver got the last trophy spot, :)
| trhoppe | 03-03-2003 10:59 AM |
Good driving, but kiko, why did you have the 3/16" in there? Did you forget about it or something?
Also, Im really surprised that the cooper S did so well this weekend. It might actually be a car to look out for in the Pros. Something I didnt think would happen.
Did the cat issue come up? Im running a highflow cat where the 3rd cat used to be. IMHO and according to the rules as I see them, this is legal. I would love to see a full ruling on this though before the SE divisional at the end of march.

According to the Evolution list, Richard West did total his RS:
One of the ST Subies was
totaled, but the driver was OK.

I watched Richard West slide, what looked like 150 ft, after the finish on
the left side and centerpunch a large shipping container right on the
corner. He was fine but his beautiful 2.5 RS has heavy front damage. Pushed
the radiator into the engine.
You STX folks might have something very serious to worry about with a well-developed Cooper S. That car doesn't have much done to it. NO power mods yet, doesn't have much camber. Be wary! Granted, the course had a lot of slaloms that I think helped negate a large portion of the AWD launch advantage, but um... Tours, I think the Cooper will at least be quite competitive.
PS- wow that rumor got spread around fast, albeit it's a bit premature to say the car is totaled. It didn't hit the dumpster THAT hard, and impacted at an angle from what I was told, since I did not witness the incident but did get a good look at the car afterwards. In my opinion, the damage was largely cosmetic, and not structural.

Oh Im worried about the S at the tours and championship. I WASNT worried about it at the Pros though
What kind of 60ft times were the STX cars pulling?
The Ft. Myers pro does have a different course design then the rest will be. Especially Peru and Petersburg. I cannot wait dammit!

It was said that once you throw a limited slip in one and give it a better suspension, it'll be much better. Looks like it's on its way there. :)
Competition = fun!
And slaloms? They won't be much of an issue for me this year (I hope). :D

I realy believed that this mod was legal because it did not increased your total boost over what was specified as a max by Subaru, o well it did not help anyways pecause my times and Oliver times were better without it,
The challege was running very smoth until I beat my own time by far with put me in a position were I could not catch myself. but it was a great learning experience,
As for Mr. West he came to the finish lights on the left side with the care a little out of shape, but he did not seem to lift or press the brakes and he took a swing head firt to a corner of a 40' container,Oliver was working at the moment and he told me that he saw the conainer move when Mr. West hit it! ouch we heard that he spit the radiator.

I think Kiko ripped a 1.7 on one launch. What the perfect amount of wheelspin can do, I guess... Courtney had a high 2.1 in practice I think, and a couple 2.2s at least then. Javier I think hit a 1.7 in his DS car, I don't think I got below 1.9, although the butt dyno said the car was launching better than it had all weekend on sunday morning, when I started launching off the greasy rubber strips. Saturday afternoon I was getting a lot of slip.
| trhoppe | 03-03-2003 11:54 AM |
Yup, right what I expected. I was pulling consistent 1.8s at the dragstrip doing a VERY conservative launch. Looks like 1.7s on a good surface for the Pros.
Courtney Cormier must have had a helluva drive to be coming back from probably 0.75 at the first turn!

Hey did anybody see the tools running STX in that crusty 305 Firechicken? :D Obviously not since nobody even bothered to throw a glance at it in impound.
Great runs by Kiko (and Oliver) in the pinch Sunday morning. Good sportsmanship, too -- instead of whining about the part, just replace it with a stock tube and kick our butts all over again! :)
I think my car was capable of high 34's. All we needed to do was minimize the tank-slapping incidents. ;) But that still wouldn't have been good enough to move me or George up. The car is surprisingly easy to launch, though -- low HP (by F Body standards) + gooey stock clutch = consistent 2.1 60' times.
It was kind of funny after our A.M. runs Saturday -- because I red-lit my two right-side runs, I was listed in 11th place with "no times" just behind Tom Hoppe in 10th place! Broken hand, nowhere near the state of Florida and Tom still wasn't DFL! :)
Pat, still waiting for that Ground Control box to show up any day now

I predict STX being dominated by the Cooper S, possibly the one driven by Richard himself... :)

No, nothing new there, we'll have to wait for the results of Michael's appeal. I sure hope that they won't insist on 6" from the cat in the downpipe, otherwise we'll have a lot of people shopping for new exhausts...
I left for my long drive home before the Challenge started, so I didn't see Richard's accident. I thought the crash on Saturday was enough.
The Cooper S looks like it will be a strong contender. They made some of the big changes (coilovers, Quaife), but Courtney was running with zero front camber because the camber plates didn't come in yet, and they will be able to loose weight and gain power (exhaust, intake, etc.).
As expected, I couldn't keep up with the fastest guys, but I was happy with my results. I wasn't DFL (8th out of 10) in the Pro, and beat one of my Evolution instructors from last year. :) He had some car trouble, but I need all the help I can get.
Sure, Pat, we noticed the Firechicken! It was nice to see an F-body running STX, it adds some variety. I was hoping that I could beat at least one of you guys, we were close on ranks 6 to 8. Next time! ;)

More info about Richard's car (from the Evolution mailing list):
I didn't see the Vette, but I also think that
Richard's Subaru looked a lot worse than it was. New
hood, radiator/condenser, and bumper, plus whatever
crossmember might be under there. But other than that,
things looked pretty much OK. The fenders were
straight, and it didn't even crack a lens or blow the
airbag.
It got centerpunched with all the force on a 1" wide
spot, which buckled the hood and made the bumper pop
out and look like hell. As long as there isn't some
"hidden" frame damage (and even if there is a little,
it should be repairable), it will live to slide again.

What a crazy event!
2 workers hit by a car, Z06 into the fence, MR Spyder into the pile of cinder blocks, DSP BMW blew it's motor, Andy Hollis' CSP Miata blew it's motor, ESP Mustang SVO blew it's motor, Richard West lost it and center punched a shipping container (at least my problems were not as bad).
Congrats to Andrew Hahn, 2nd in DS by .100!!!!!!
And he beat Kevin Youngers in the Challenge!
ConeBasher was stuck in Limp Home mode because of a sensor glitch! Sucks to misfire above 5k:mad:
But we have the car back and all should be well by the Houston Tour.
