Fuba Antenna part 1

Fuba Antenna

1 Attachment(s)
OK, so I have owned VW's all my life and have always like the radio-control-car look of the Fuba roof mount antenna. So, I broke out the stepper bit, drilled up the WRX, and here is the result.

Voila - this weeks cool mod :)

Cheers

How hard was it to remove the headliner to run the wiring back there? Better signal than before?

Cool!

Was it difficult to run the antenna wire to the antenna? Did you loose or gain reception? Do you think it could be mounted near stock location? Nice though.

Amplified

Headliner was easy, there are some plastic thumb screws holding the headliner in, then a lot of clips - antenna recieves 10x better now than before because the Fuba is amplified. It is easy to plug into the radio - I got a kit from a local shop with 5meters of antenna cable and a standard end, so there was plenty of cable to plug into the head unit. Power switching for the unit comes from the power antenna lead on the wiring harness of the head unit. Overall I think it looks much better than the antenna in the stock location which I think makes the car look out of proportion.

Next week it goes in to have the stock antenna removed, the hole ground and painted to make it look like there was never one there.

Looks awsome ! I always like those style antennas
Arnie 12-05-2001 10:34 PM

Love Fubas! Looks great. I always had to keep a spare antenna in my car because these were always getting unscrewed and ripped off!
Raekwon 12-06-2001 02:05 AM

VW people always seem to flame others for putting those antennas on a non-vw car...:(
WRXnFX 12-06-2001 02:16 AM

How much is it the stock hole repair going to cost...btw love those antennas!?
Lovejoy 12-06-2001 08:52 AM

Can you post a full car pic with the fubu?

Nice mod. OT what does your emblem say? It looks like you have the "WRX" under the "IMPREZA" emblem. Gotta closeup?
grandmasterchan 12-06-2001 10:05 AM

IMHO, Fubas belong on VW's but I gotta give you props for at least buying a real one and having the testicular fortitude to drill a hole in your roof. Good job man.

Did you get the amplified one? They are the ones w/ the wire wrapped around the mast.
SubyObsessive 12-06-2001 10:30 AM

alfalfa? is that....ahhh...nevermind

hehe sorry, those just arent my style...they just remind me to much of Bugz
juztin180 12-06-2001 10:50 AM

what wheels are those on your car man?

love 'em

antenna looks good.
might be a dumb question, but where is the factory antenna on a WRX...test drove one but i didnt notice it
dead-eye 12-06-2001 10:57 AM

The local auto body shop gave me an estimate of $500 to have my antenna shaved. I currently have a wire antenna threaded through the stock spoiler. No difference in reception noted. I'm currently leaning towards an Audi TT antenna or the stubby BMW antenna.
vinster02 12-06-2001 11:04 AM

Love those antennas also, But I must agree major testecular flexing to drill that hole in the roof. As much as I have wanted to place one of those on the cars i've tweeked I just have to leave them to the VWs. Mad props though.
Arnie 12-06-2001 12:27 PM

Fubas aren't just for VW's. There are numerous makes and models flying the Fuba flag in Europe. But no one here seems to know much about that.

zang!

I don't plant to do this mod & I don't run my car through the auto car wash anymore, but for those who do both, it got me thinking...

don't you have to worry about:
1. leak on the roof (if the drilling, installation, etc. didn't result in a very tight fit)
2. breaking that antenna in a drive through auto carwash? (like they have in many Shell gas stations)

? opinions?

Having owned a Corrado for the last 11 years with a Fuba.
1) If installed correctly, this shouldn't be a problem. I've never noticed a problem with mine. I can see how a sloppy install job could cause problems, though.
2) the antenna mast unscrews from the base in a couple seconds. The base is quite solid. With that said, I've run mine though carwashes without unscrewing the mast and no problems.
KazeXtreme 12-06-2001 01:52 PM

1. Leaking is not a concern. The hole was drilled at 9/32 so it was very tight (had to wiggle the threads thru a little) and both faces of the bottom of the mount and the top of the nut were treated with a silicone sealant so that there would be no leakage.

2. As for breaking the antenna in a drive thru, the only way that would happen is if you went thru a car was that used brush rollers, and if that was the case you obviously arent very concerned about the paint job.

As for where to run the cabling, you have to remove 3 of the "Oh [email protected]" bars which is easy (pop the caps up off the ends, slide them up the hande a bit, and use a phillips to remove the 2 screws) and remove 4 pop plugs (use your fingernails or a plastic knife so you dont tear the lining up).

And I thought I was the only one.....

I had the antennae shaved when the car was painted for hail damage.

For all those nay-sayers... take a look at the WRC cars... They have fuba's... or at least somthing similar...(yeah, not for stereo, but they're still there)

OK, some answers -

1. The wheels are Speedline GT1 Corse 18x7.5 wrapped in Pirelli 7000 Supersports at 215 40 18 - They came from Scoobysport/Rallyperformance.

2. The badge on the back is a carbon fibre version of the STi badge Subaru puts on the Sti WRX in Japan.

3. The guy you see in here called "Kazextreme" is my boy and general all around installation genius and he drilled the holes. Also, these are not the first holes to be drilled in the car - I will post a full pic of my car for everyone to see, but I also have VW-style euro side marker turn signals which required a 16mm hole to be drilled in each front fender. I gotta be honest - its just not that big of a deal if you are careful. Ive also had 3 carwashes since installation and no leaks or other problems with the signals or the antenna.

The only reason I really did this mod is because I like the way it looks and it definitely sets the car apart. Plus, the reception really is better. As for the shaving and repainting, I am paying $250 to have that done, which is worth it to me considering all the trouble I have already gone through to make this mod happen.

Cheers,

JaMa

OMG

you take your car through automatic car washes

you're brave man!!

car looks very good, would like to see some full pictures if ya could.

i think your car has won me over to silver. Its between that and black and i cant find wheels that i like on the black yet, but damn those wheels look good.

from my VW days, put some red thread lock on the antenna thread, it will take pliers to unscrew it after that. I never had them stolen from my cars..my GF's next to mine was always ripped off 'cause she never listeneed to me about the thread lock...hey it was her car..I did enough work on it, she could have done some.
WRXThis 12-06-2001 03:40 PM

I want one JaMa! You up to do another KazeExtreme? Yes, I have seen this boy in action, his work rocks. :D
hYYpeRX 12-06-2001 04:25 PM

clean...

fuba style antenna's are the way to go IMHO. I had this done to my 2nd gen integra with shaved everything... think it finished the look off nicely.

If some of you haven't noticed, a lot of cars are going to this style... Acura MDX, BMW's, AUDI & VW, new Lancer, and rumor has it that the new STi will have this style antenna instead of the manual.

So, this is not a VW German farfegnugen(sp?) thing... :D

I would do the same thing if I had 600 laying around and didn't want anything else... or unless I got caught in some hail...

NICE LOOK!!!

PS>.. the antenna's have a removable mast for those that want to go through the car wash.
mrbell 12-06-2001 04:37 PM

that's "Fahrfugnugen" w/ some umlauts, which I don't feel like figuring out..
hYYpeRX 12-06-2001 04:46 PM

yoink!

Thanks MRBELL...

thanks,
