Gauge Priority - Autometer?

I did a search and cant really find what I needed, I know EGT is a big one but what would be most important after that? Which gauges should I prioritize? If you could just list 'em in order thad be great.
Voltmeter
Trans Temp (useful?)
EGT
Fuel Pressure
Oil Temp
Oil Pressure
Water Temp
Air/Fuel
Boost Gauge (already got, OEM)
What are some gauges to stay away from, accuracy/quality wise? Autometer any good? As of now leaning to the low cost of the autometer cobalt? Suggestions?

Assuming you'll be modding the car, and taking into account you already have a boost gauge, EGT, Oil Temp, A/F. Watching these 3 may prevent serious engine damage .

I dont have EGT, Oil Temp, and A/f. Are you putting those as tops?
| subiekid | 10-25-2004 07:22 PM |
If you have a narrow band o2 sensor then running an A/F gauge will not help. Boost/EGT/Oil Pressure are the most common. You can do oil temp but oil pressure will drop before oil temp will go up. Trans temp is good if you have an AT, but if you throw on a trany cooler then you should be fine with that.

I gotta fill those 3 guages on the a pillar...

... and maybe that one center pod that has a hole so you can see the clock too, anyone know what its called or where I can get it?

Boost # 1 (you already got that one, right)
EGT # 2
Then mods. Now:
Get a fuel pressure if you're playing with injectors/fuel pressure and you're maxing out IDC. (really pointless if you're not tuning yourself)
Intake charge temp is good if you're planning on exploring the limits of boost on your turbo. 2 channel can show you both when you need a bigger intercooler (or water spray) and when you can't simply 'dial' up more boost on your current turbo. (also not really usefull unless tuning yourself)
Oil temp and pressure if you're racing (I use pressure myself to fill up an extra spot; I don't race) Have you chosen your EM yet? Still thinking UTEC?>

Well I have boost, egt, oil temp, water temp, oil pressure, going to install fuel pressure when I am home for Thanksgiving break, and I have a wideband that shows me my AFR.
But I have to tune my car because I have a TEC 3 running the motor. On top of all my gauge, my TEC shows me my coolant temp, air intake temp, knock, and a ton of other things.
I say get rid of the OEM boost gauge, then get EGT and Oil Pressure. Maybe switch over to PSI since most Americans have trouble converting.

Autometer any good?
| OCD | 10-25-2004 09:34 PM |
i have the autometer cf series boost, egt and oil temp and have no complaints what so ever, the boost is almost dead on (i have a blitz ebc I-D and they are always almost identical readings, blitz is faster of course though, not enough where it really that big of a deal)

Auto Meters are fine. I have Sport-Comp series. Love 'em. Even sort of matches the stock gauges.

Is trans temp even slightly useful with a mt?

nope
get Boost, EGT, Oil ( either pressure or temp) i'd be more inclined to temp since the car is turbo.
Autometer gages are OK. i'd highly recomend getting as many as you can electronic tho. i've installed a few hundred (YES Hundred) gages over the years and most mechanical ones from autometer will be off to some degree.
also mechanical gages that measure fluids are a no-no inside the cabin

Would you recommend GReddy over Autometer?

Yes,
I have autometer and defi. I love the defi and hate the autometer. I am replacing all my autometer with greddy.

For the EGT gauge, would putting it in the Uppipe give me an good readying or should it really go in the exhaust manifold (sp)

Definitely do the header, the uppipe will not be accurate enough. Its pretty easy to tape the header and put the probe there, it seems harder than it really is.

Stay away from Autometer. I've read many threads about people whose gauges have sucked it up and/or had their needle fall off. I wouldn't recommend them at all.
Check Omori for stock look and quality, GReddy for quality and a nice look, Defi for a cool look and nice features, HKS for easy mounting options.

If this happens Atuometer would replace the gauge for free. So many people speak from no experience. I have been running Atuometer gauges for about 7 years with no problems what so ever. They have always been reliable accurate gauges. Not the prettiest or most accurate, but not nearly as expensive either. I have Autometer boost and EGT in the Sport comp series in my 04. Perfect match with the stock gauges.

And people think the hood scoop blocks their vision. HAH! That's nothing compared to that gauge pod.

I've had several things replaced or upgraded, so thought it might be in my best interest to have gauges to monitor each system. Am working on getting a wideband A/F (probably not really needed), but am installing an Omori 45mm oil pessure on the left side of the column in an HKS egg (stock boost is on the right), and a 52mm Autometer Z series fuel pressure and EGT in the Autometer instrument bezel. Car also came with voltmeter, oil temp, and manifold vacuum in the center pod. Yeah, I know... "Why vacuum?" Call it an idle check back-up.
Anyway, I bought an SP Performance dual-probe intake air temp gauge. Saw a photo of a Fastline WRX with the gauge mounted in the overhead map light housing. It fancied my eye. (It's a smallish rectangular gauge with LED readout)
I haven't heard anything inherently bad about Autometer. They do have a good warranty and look every bit as well-made as the Omori I bought.
Besides, if I'm going to drive something of this sort and spend this much money on engine mods, I'm going to try to make sure everything is running normally.
Plus, hey... Pretty colors, moving needles, and flashing lights. What's not to like?
