I might do this sometime in the future... What did you use/how did you do it? I think it's a great idea - makes the car a bit more unique, but not too flashy. :)

it was real easy. bought one of those neon lights that you can get from virtually any auto store, even target. i got a 9" light from autozone for $20. you can get them for cheaper but this had an on/off switch. the light comes with mounting screws. i then mounted the light to the inside of the anterior rubber seal of the hood scoop. mounting it here gives the intercooler a glow instead of the direct light of the neon which is distracting. then i ran the wire through the firewall and plugged it into the cigarette adaptor. i wish i had bought a slightly bigger and brighter light as the glow is very subtle, i was considering putting one of those neon license plate things to getter a brighter glow. of course the lights come in multitude of colors so choose the one that best fits you. i can post pictures of where the light exactly is installed if you like. had the light for months and no melting of any wires or the light itself. mounting it on the rubber seal keeps it cool

I like it alot. I was thinking about doing this but I think it would look a lot better If I had a whole neon kit to accompany it.

ch692115 - Could you please post pictures of where you mounted the neon light? I'm a goof when it comes to any kind of installation..

the plug with switch. you can run the wire in the crack to keep it clean looking

It looks kind of like "Kit" from Knight Rider!
I am an old fart and don't really like all the neon that kids dress there cars up with these days. However, the blue intercooler thing is kind of cool peaking through the hood scoop!

not so clean looking as i didn't really care or spend much time doing this part but wire runs through firewall and up to hood scoop

the mounting of the light. notice it isn't centered on the rubber seal but it is centered with respect to the hoodscoop

I think someone should do a KnightRider style with the red leds shooting left and right.
| blaznasn | 08-10-2002 03:43 AM |
i think this is "rice" it is equivalent to those neons in the water nozzles on the hood.
| ch692115 | 08-10-2002 10:30 AM |
yeah i thot it was "rice" too but it's not quite as bright as those led windshield squirter things. you can spot those a mile away and you can spot those led exhaust tips 3 miles away. i was blinded by one of them

when u said "firewall u mean from the hood to inside your car?
how did u get it through with out taking alot of stuff out?

you don't have to take anything out. there is a rubber grommet about 1.5 inches in diameter that allows access from the engine bay to your car's interior. this is the same place you can run a boost line from your engine to your boost gauge. it can be found behind the intercooler on the firewall. it's lower than the level of the intercooler. pull the grommet out, poke a hole in it, put it back in place, and then you can then run a wire through it. the wire should then fall at the gas pedal. as the wire is pretty floppy/flimsy, you might need something firmer to help guide the wire through the grommet hole. i used my boost guage line as a guide to run the neon light's wire.

Just last weekend, me and my 10 year son, went to the auto store looking to do exactly what you did. My son just saw your pictures and said wow!
I agree with Stanley(up there in age also), not too bright, just sort of an accent', subtle, it is pretty cool. And you said it's more subtle than the pictures.
I didn't want somthing real bright, and flashy boy racer. You don't want to attract the cops to it. I think what you did is perfect.
Anyway, What was the actual name of the kit you bought ?
Thanks,
Jimmy
PS. Also Ice Blue, I think, is the best match to Silver

Still not sure where you mounted it? The ones I saw had mounting screws. Didn't you have to screw in a mounting screw bracket? Where did you do that?.
Thanks again,
Jimmy

just mount the light on the inside of the rubber piece closest to the front of the car. be sure not to mount too high up near the opening of the scoop because the neon light will be visible. the effect you want is the glow of the neon light to come out of the scoop and not the direct light of the neon. mounting it here also lets you run the wire through that slit in the rubber piece (see the pics above) so that the wire doesn't directly touch the intercooler or any hot parts. screw the screws directly into the rubber, it provides a secure mount and the screws are pretty small that if you decide to remove the light it really doesn't do any damage to the rubber (no gaping holes or tearing). my light also came with 3M two-sided adhesive tape but it melted in the heat so be sure to use the screws. i don't remember which brand i bought but looking at the different lights they all should work fine. mine is a 9" light and you can get one slightly bigger but remember that rubber housing underneath the hood scoop is actually smaller than the scoop and not centered on the scoop. if you look at the pictures i posted above my light is centered with the hood scoop but not with the rubber housing. good luck

I think it looks cool. Not my thing, but diversity is what makes cars unique. And as for the ricey commments, it's not ricey unless it's washer lights on an 87 celebrity wagon with light rope hanging from under the car and the latest and greatest Eminem crackling out of it's pulsar tape deck and blown stock speakers.

First light up windsheild sprayers, now light up intercooler scoops, what next?
Oooh ooh, I got it! Light-up intercooler sprayers!
Actually, I don't think it's that bad if it's really subtle, but just to let you know, it's _really_ illegal. If you were driving with that on, technically you could get in trouble for impersonating a cop. Nicely done though :P

personally i like , but i dont think its really a "kit" you could just go buy a regular like 12in neon rod run it through the fire wall adn hardwire it to a switch for controlling . lighting IF DONE RIGHT can look good though

Hey, I have a Knight Rider set-up on my car! I really do. It is just a goofy thing I did, but I don't really want to be flamed for it. But, someday I'll post pics.
FYI Not sure about your state, but blue lighting is illegal in mine (Mass.) It is reseerved for police and ambulences. But not all states are the same, so you'd best doublecheck. If you don't drive with it on I wouldn't worry about it. Also, it is just a fine. If someone says you are impersonating a cop (escpecially a cop) they have no basis. Flashing blue lights maybe, but not something like this. Plus, to really be considered impersonating a cop you would have to pull someone over, etc. For example, you can dress up like a cop on Halloween, you just can't go around arresting people.
Don't pay attention to what others think. It is your car do what you want to it. Just be aware of any safety and legal implications.

It looks sweet. I think I was the first to do this. I did it in April and I also put a neon light behind the front bumper. I am glad this is catching on even though I liked being the only one who did it.
