More to the question of what is the best cheapest suspension system for being airborne. Using the car for daily driver, don't care if it is setup for rally on the street. ( I live in the sticks so every day sees some gravel time) :D

You'll definitely have to upgrade your threads locator if you want to do any type of racing. Currently, there is no suspension available for you. If you call back in 15 minutes, you can buy a full set of Ohlins gravel dampers or a set of KYBs. The best cheapest exhaust is dryer exhaust vent pipe. It's not best or cheapest. But it's best cheapest. No, absolutely not. I'd rather sponsor egg rolling tournaments. Better ROI.

threads locator? am I going to have to upgrade my indernets?? Not sure about egg rolling but the swedish flick is part and parcel of growing up in a redneck town with a ford country squire station wagon. No eggs here ( sometimes marbles though).

Ask this guy about suspension.

YEAH, who is that??? HIs car loooks like my rabbit on my way to work every morning( before I cacked the rear struts) Driving style like an animal. So does this mean my indernets are up to date? And a quick pricing for struts and springs what's the fair price?

Ok, you pass. You seem ok to me. Seriously, though, do a search.
In short, to run Rallycross, you don't need anything but a helmet and a functioning car. To run stage rally, there are very significant requirements, and I would recommend buying, as opposed to building, your first stage rally car.
But do a search and then come back with detailed questions, and we'll be happy to help.

Where about, sorry aboot, in Canada are you?
If you're in Ontario I can point you to a number of resourses, including the MLRC RallyX series (this years dates are yet to be announced, but the location has been secured).

Da, out here in the b.c.kootenays, where the only option is to build it to drive it. not buy it to drive it. Christian , not trying to take away from your info, however I am a combuter weenie and not too savvy with things that do not have steering wheels, therefore the Questions about springs, etc. You know just trying to get along.

The smell around here is of teen spirit. Maybe I have chosen a car which is unsuitable for rally( is it not colin's car? can parts between subs be interchanged? IE sti etc?) Roll cage is figured out, nomex is fitted, but I will kill this car in it's present form. Not too good. My other car (obs )has kyb's, sti top hats . they are only okay and I think they will not stand the torture which is the drive home, much less when I put my giv'r foot down. Maybe a bit of help with used dms etc??

If you seriously want to rally, look into buying a used rally car. You will spend every penny and more to build one from a car you already have. Used cars are likely beat up a bit, but if they are still in one piece after having some rallies under their belt....then they might just last one more. Building your own takes quite a bit of work and know how. Its not wise undertaking to try an build your own without any experience in the area. Buying a used car saves those headaches. check out ben's rally page for some listings of used cars. You might have to drive a ways to pick it up.....but you'll be glad you didn't go through the hassle of building one first.
Find a local rallycross, you can do that with a stock vehicle. You'll need a helmet, a good attitude and a car in decent working order. Worry about modifying the vehicle after you have an event or two under your belt. Modify what you break.
Is your car in good working order now?

My mr. Myagi wrenched with pat richard last year and now is renting rally cars, so he is doing the buildup with me, however I still have to locate parts for this unit. If I had a bunch of money and no mortgage I would buy a prepped car, however this is for naught, I need a place to sleep. Thanks for all you help and maybe see you on the track ( in the rearview)

Mortgage or no mortgage, money is still money.
What people are trying to tell you, and you're not hearing, is that for the price of a basic DMS suspension you can buy a whole rally car. Add the price of putting a safe, legal roll cage in your car and you can buy a NICE whole rally car.
It doesn't matter if you have a dozen Prodrive technicians chained up in your basement, it's still never economical to build your first rally car.

eeeeexxxxxxxxactly.
So Mr Myagi is installing the cage. Are you seam welding the car. Boxing any components? How much are you spending on the cage materials?
rally car for $3000 This and more can be found at the site, several rally cars in the area of $6k...not sure what it translates to in Can$.
You will spend $3k easy to get your car prepared....and hopefully you won't wreck it.....but i'd prepare for some sort of damage.
You may want to look into a second mortgage, rally is not cheap....even when you do it the least expensive way.
Now if you want to build a car, for the sake of building it....fine, good for you.
I'd still find a way to crew with someone and learn a bit before building.
If you just want an uber cool suspension then do that to.
Exhaust.....wouldn't waste a whole lot on it, the chances of it getting ripped off from the bottom of your car in competition are up there. Go to a local muffler place and have you build one up with a little bit bigger diameter pipe and call it done.
People are giving you solid advice here, if you want it.

Not saying it is bad advice, however I fall into the juresdiction of the canadian government and they are not very forthcoming about imported vehicles. Problem one. In regards to purchasing a used rally car, well, I would not buy a car from myself so I cannot forsee me buying a car from a rally racer type. ( probably pretty hard on it) Problem two. Which leads me to a build up with a professional mechanic. Again it is not that you or I are wrong or right, just that getting from point a to b is one's own journey. I have chosen the Other route. HOOK a BROTHER up.
| sachilles | 05-18-2006 03:55 PM |
Ok, I'll hook you up.
Go to your local boneyard. Find some legacy's. Remove the suspension, install in your car.
OR
Go to the local parts store, and find the cheapest suspension components they have and buy twice as many as you need for your car.
You are going to break stuff, get used to the idea. You'll need spares.
You'll break the biggest baddest stuff out there, or at least you'll need to rebuild it. Might as well go cheap. When it breaks, replace with the spare or junkyard part. Throw the broken part out....and yes I'm serious.
If you have a look around the site I posted above, you'll find parts too....as well as cars...some of those cars where in Canada btw, so you won't have to do much to import them.
you've got to be a troll....and I'm falling for it hook line and sinker.

Daniel son, your enthusiasm is great. In order to start rallying, you need to rein it in a bit, and go to a few rallies BEFORE you just hop into a build-up and launch off wasting money left and right while you smack into bumps in the learning curve.
Learn how ppl put teams together. Learn how rallies are run, what the rules are. How the good cars are put together. Older Subies are the way to go, but be advised: EVERY used rally car has been beat to crap. Well, so what? You'll just beat on it some more while you're learning. Going with a pre-owned pre-built car you will save yourself tons of time and $ that would be better spent on entry fees and tires and spare parts to amass the seat time you need to do more than just one or two events before you run out of money, support and friends .
There is a whole lot more to rallying than what sort of cheap suspension you need before you can go make like McRae. If you can't or won't listen to good and time-tested advice from ppl who know (as many on here DO) you obviously do not have the sense or patience to ever get anywhere in rallying...except off the road and terminally into the ditch.
Tone down your airborne rally fantasies for a minute and open your mind, guy--ppl here ARE trying to hook a brotha up!

Jumped that jump three times and still drive my car everyday to work.
