got me a love bite this evening.

my wife and i were out all day today, and got home about 5PM and everythign way fine. we went out again at 8PM to go grocery shopping and found this mess.
my question is......
can this be pulled/knock out? or am i gonna need a new trunk lid?? i have a $250 deductible, so it does not really matter. just curious. of course, if given a choice, i'd rather see them install a new lid.

I'd say your getting a new trunk lid AND a new bumper.

I agree, I hope you get that replaced anyway, just getting it pulled out would not be satisfactory to me...
| trauma11 | 10-15-2006 10:09 PM |
but if the insurance adjuster only gives you X amount of dollars in his estimate and it only covers it getting pulled out your paying the 250 deductible and the difference to get a new one if you still want to go that route.
| Gil | 10-15-2006 10:13 PM |
a new trunk lid and bumper sounds damn good to me. let's just hope the insurance company doesn't cheap out on me.
you know the "messed up" thing about this whole mess. i've been thinking about getting my bumper repainted in the spring cos of a big scuff on the right-side corner, and that badge on the trunk is hiding a 1"-long scrape.

Not true, if you take it to a mechanic/auto body shop, and they contact the adjuster telling him that the panel cant be repaired for less than the cost of a new one, the adjuster will issue another check for the cost difference. YOU wont see any additional money, but the shop will get the extra money to do the repair correctly.
This is very similar to what happened to me. I got hit in the rear quarter, damaged my bumper and factory add-on lip. Adjuster only gave me enough money to repair the damaged pieces. Body shop called adjuster, told him the parts had to be replaced since they were damaged beyond satisfactory repair condition, adjuster cuts body shop extra money to buy new parts to be painted instead of attempting to repair the damaged parts.
Also, be sure NOT to take it to the insurance companies certified body shops, they all work together to get the repairs done for as little as it will cost them, regardless of how well the repairs are when done. Take it to a trustworthy independent repair shop and let them handle the situation.

Get an estimate at a dealer - then take the statement to your insurance.
| littlewhitewagon | 10-16-2006 12:09 AM |
^^^ doesn't do any good. insurance estimates come from the MITCHELL body estimator system and will negotiate a price with the shop that is doing th repair. don't waste your time running around, find a shop you want to get the car fixed at and call the insurance company, tell them you want the car fixed there. done.
| bhhamblin | 10-16-2006 12:19 AM |

Ummm....looks like I have to be the guy to break the news to you, but no estimator in their right mind is going to rule to replace that decklid. That's a very simple repair for a body shop, and I'm suprised that an actual body tech hasn't responded to your post yet. Now, you're more that welcome to take the insurance money and buy a new lid instead, but they're going to call that repair/repaint vs. replace. I had nearly the same damage to the bumper cover and decklid earlier this summer. FWIW, the bumper cover probably WILL be replaced as it is so inexpensive compared to the labor to fix it.

Good call with taking around and getting estimates! Though I do highly suggest not taking it to a dealer bodyshop whatsoever!! Usually they're a bit higher than a reg bodyshop (not maaco, which is of course absolute crap). I'm sure there are a few excellent local bodyshops in your area. However keep this in mind, you can specify your paint brand to be used in the repair if they carry it. Dont use Diamont (made by 3m I believe) use something like Hubert, it's what is used to paint BMW,Mercedes(pre dhaimler-chrysler, not sure now) and Volkwagen out of the factory. Depending on the hardener they use, which is another topic entirely, this paint is very tough! Something similar happened to me a few years ago to my wagon rear gate. In my case the person who hit it even left a note with contact info :D (which I was very lucky and I assume didnt happen to you) I brought it to a local subaru dealer bodyshop after having the damage adjusted by Geico. The insurance company gave me plenty to get the work done-and even enough to buy a new HKS carbon Ti at the time . Though the work done was terrible and the paint was even worse. Later that winter I lightly (and I mean lightly) backed out of a driveway into a snow bank and the Diamont paint started coming coming off the bumper in small sheets. Took it to the dealer wondering what the hell happened so they repainted it. Fast forward a few years- I got into an accident in where the back of the car was not involved but it received some scratches so it also was to be repainted. When the bodyshop started painting the back bumper after the prep work (using Hubert paint just like the rest of the car) it would not adhere because of the chemical properties in the Diamont. So they stripped it and started from scratch. So the moral of the story boys and girls is when getting a car repainted (if not doing yourself) check out out the products they will be applying to your car!!

IDK, I'd probably disagree with you. My decklid was fixed, not replaced as I told the OP. There is absolutely no sign of any damage now from the inside, OR the outside. Body shops have some amazing tools at their disposal in this day and age, and they can work miracles sometimes.

i'm actually OK with them repairing the trunk and not repalcing it.
what i really care about is that the paint matches, and it closes and releases properly, and does not rattle.

got the car back this afternoon. looks even better than before. they even wiped down (albeit somewhat half-heartedly) the dash, center console and front door panels with something akin to armor all, just more goopy and sticky.
the guy was great to work with; polite, understanding, straight-forward.
they found a few part that did not need to be replaced, so that saved me some money. in fact, the repair actually came in below the estimate, and i don't even have to pay my deductible.

as always there's a BUT
one of the items they felt did not warrant replacement was the absorber. it did not need to be replaced as it was not crumpled, just snapped in two, and so did not replace it. they put it back together with duct tape!! the item is not on the bill. don't get me wrong, i appreciate duct tape as much as the next guy, but i just don't know if this is an appropriate application.

i called and asked them about it, and asked them if this is a common practice, and they said yes. they told me that if i wanted to, they can replace it in a morning.
Soooooooo. what should I do? leave it, or have it replaced for $60?
what would YOU do?

How much was the quote for the work if I may ask? They did a pretty good job it looks like. Is there a noticible difference in paint from the trunk to the rest of the car? I've been told it's stupid to get just certain parts of my car repainted in this color and I should repaint the whole car or it won't match. I'm curious to know if this is true or not.
Otherwise, that looks great and I'm glad to hear it turned out alright for ya.

waited until i had a chance to take a good look in the sun before i replied. the only diff is that the new paint is clean and shiny. the old has lots of fine spider web.
