havent heard much about them so thats likely a bad thing. What are you looking for gravel suspension for? TSD? Performance? Rallyx? there are many options for you, tell us what you plan on doing with these struts and we can help

Stephan Verdier used them on his PGT car to much success. Eric Langbien now has that car. Try them or Jeff Shu at Chaste Auto, as I believe they use them too.

I am using them and have had good luck with them thus far. We are no longer using the Tein springs though as we've gone to H&R 2.5" ID springs.
Here is a link to an old thread I had saved.

Aki Teiskonen is testing the new age Tein's in August. You might use him as a resource.

good tips...thanks lads
they do seem to be a cost effective option vs DMS struts
I've also heard elsewhere about horrific rebuild times/issues and as this is a daily driver I need the car on the road

What is the price of the struts? any more info on them? I was not aware of anyone running them, i'd like to know more who is running them in this case
| JC_595 | 09-26-2005 04:03 PM |
Yes, I have heard that Tein springs may not be suited for rally & that H&R or Eibach may be better. That was hearsay though...
Tein makes good tarmac stuff, so I imagine the main components are probably decent.

I've heard both good and bad things about the rebuild times. I know one person says he got his back in short order but another says that it would take a considerable amount of time.
I haven't had mine rebuilt yet but I will let you guys know my experience.

im trying to get some prices for the WRX
looks like somewhere in the region of 2-2.5k (ish)
by the looks of the reviews they seem to be ideal for what I'm currently doing although maybe not up to hard stage rallying. However, I did read that one guy has run two seasons on them with no issues.

if thats the price range I strongly suggest you check out hot bits. I had DMS 50mm on our rallycar but we switched those (old and needed a full rebuild...over $1000US!) out for new hotbits and have been really impressed at their performance, truly amazing suspension at a price point of about 2k US. Rebuilds are not nearly as frequent as DMS has to be and are not nearly as expensive either. Check them out. If you need more info email me and I can direct you to a supplier.

I had a set on my 2.5RS for a while, but sold them to a guy who rallies in the northwest. I rallycrossed a couple of times and played around a lot on dirt, and they worked great. Ruts, small jumps included. They were great for dirt & very good for track/autox, but dding they were a little bouncy at times. The height adjustment collars stripped a little bit on a couple of them and the set screws seized. Never had them rebuilt, so I don't know anything about that.
And they're HEAVY. About 7 lbs heavier/ corner vs. stock.

Fred, I think you sold your set to me.
We've done 4 rallies on the set I have, including Rim of the World, with zero issues thus far. Like I said, we replaced the springs with H&R springs but beyond that, we haven't touched them.
Verdier had rallied two seasons with Tein HGs and had minimal problems beyond bending one strut (I think at Rim) when I talked to him this year at Rim. :)
I was going to mention the HotBits suspension as I've heard good things. I couldn't, however, find a rally-specific strut on the sites I have looked at so I didn't post them up.

Dave,
Another option might be to check out these, I had asked about a price last spring, after I found a leaker. right around the same money as all the others, except uses a standard 50mm (or 40) bilstien strut insert there inverted so the actual strut rod runs down into the threaded 4130 tubing. These are some beefy suspensions just look through the photos.
http://www.jvab.f4.ca/
(I've also heard that the STi V7 or V8 are pretty sturdy for gravel use.)

I have these on my 2002 wrx wagon daily-driver that also sees rallyx's. I got them used for $1200. I have had 2 of them rebuilt in the last year and a half. Each rebuild/refurbish was @$260. The first time it took Tein USA about 2 1/2 weeks to turn it around. The second time, it took 5 weeks! :furious: Alas, it seemed to be thier busy season.
Don't get me wrong, to spite being expensive and sometimes needing maintenance, I love these things. They provide a suprising amount of comfort while still handing fantasically on backroad twisties at breakneck speeds. No other after-market suspension I've experienced can do comfort and handling as well as the HGs, which is why I was willing to spend so much on a suspension. :)

Tein Type HG

here is the scoop from Davenport racing
"If you need them for rally it would be $2420.00 shipped. Includes the
same as above (struts, top mounts, adjusters etc). If it is for rally and you would like 2 sets The total would be $4840.00. $135.00 less than one set of DMS.
The rally sets are 46mm with the housing wall being 5mm for added
strength.
The street/race sets are 40mm with a 3mm housing wall. The range of
adjustment from soft to hard is much wider than the DMS range."
just for everyones information!

Here is my old thread on the HGs:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=319752&highlight=tein
To add to that, I'll have to note that a few things are stuck now. The adjusters work great, but the threaded body has become rusted and the spring perch is fused to the body so I can't adjust ride height. And now Tein does not return my calls or emails about the HGs. I may attempt to service them soon, but it will be tough without support.

The rally shocks from hotbits also have a longer shock canister length. That is the setup we have on our rallycar and we sell the sets for $2800CDN That is WITH pillowball mounts and camber plates in the front. If anyone needs more info PM me

Hotbits and HG's

If you want the Hotbits....I would contact Evolutionracewerks.com The owners name is Fred and he's a dealer in the Los Angeles area. I got my set-up for my SRT-4 through him for alot cheaper than $2400!!!! He's a one man shop so he doesn't man the phones all day, he's usually under a car so if he doesn't answer, leave him a message!
The Hotbits website doesn't list any rally set-ups but they do offer them. The top spec ones are single adjustable (double soon) and have remote canisters. The sole distributor is in Canada but all Hotbits rally set-ups are built in Malaysia and shipped to North America.
Re: Tein - Stephan's set-up used 2 1/2" springs, custom valving and longer rods in the rear shocks.
He did blow a shock at RIM on the big jump but we suspect the shock was already messed up from a previous roll.

I just put a set of HotBits on my 2004 STi and love them. They are the rally valved set and I got them without their top mounts, since I already had camber plates. (~$1700 from Larry Parker) In my mind, if you don't need the extra 1% of speed, the single adjustable set is the way to go. They are already valved correctly for rebound and the only thing you really change is the compression. Just email or call up one of the US distributors and ask for a rally set and give them your car info. Ohh and Larry Parker also is the US rebuilder, and they are ~$50 each to get them rebuilt.

Thanks
| Prometheus_6k_rpm | 10-06-2005 12:11 PM |
The rally ones are not on the hotbits site. US distributors put in your order and they are custom made to rally specs (valving, extra length, etc...) and take about 1-2 weeks. I've got 38 clicks of adjustability and when I have it on full soft they feel fine for street driving, even better than stock. The spring rates are a bit stiffer than stock but these are not super stiff like a proper autox coilover. I just ran a night rallyx event and the bumps on course just melted away with them stiffened up. The stock STi struts would bottom out and bounce a lot, but not with these new ones. Email larry (at) motorsport-dist.com and ask for some more info.

Thanks! It's my site. I also run the 100 Acre Wood rally 100aw.org and 321Govideo.com
There are some big ditches from runoff so we can't use all of it. We sometimes use the main field and then cross over the little valley and onto a nice banked hill. If you look at the video from the May 8th event, about 1/2 way into it is the banked hill.
This is coming down the hill. ~315 ft-lbs to the wheels and rally tires are a lot of fun.

We only run one car on course, so the workers go out to their section and use a flashlight to look for cones that are down. (Sometimes they miss one) We also didn't use as many cones and left a lot of space so that you could really hang it out and not get burned. The workers also had on reflective vests for safety.
I'll take some photos of my hotbits (maybe my cool light bar) and post them.

Rally 4000s? Hah, I don't have tons of cash to spend on lights. :) Just 4 x el cheapo' Hella FF1000s. The stock high beams + HIDs put out good light and distance. 2 of the FF1000s are used as corner lights and the other two center lights are as good as the stock high beams.

Hotbits are the way to go for the rallyist on a budget. Ours performed superbly at TN and NY. The gravel stages at NY were pretty rough (and we did have a suspension failure) but the struts were excellent all weekend.
I got mine from Peter at motorsport-dist.com. If the rebuild service is as good as the initial purchase they have a real winner with this product.

How do you think they'll stand up to winters (salt)? And what about using them for autox also in the summer. Maybe they wont go as stiff as an autox only setup, but think they'll be a huge improvement over stock?

I don't think they will be worse than any other steel coil over....Just get a can of WD40 "Big Blast" and hose them periodically. I do this on the rally car and don't have any rust on the struts (just keep away from the rotors).
My car is a Neon so my results may be a bit different. But the rally valving is great, not much body roll and you never bottom out. I ran them at rally TN (tarmac rally) and the car handled exceptionally well with the low spring rates. You can order whatever springs you want so this shouldn't be an issue anyway.

Sorry it took so long, I've had tons of stuff to get done for the National RallyCross in Hastings this coming weekend.
Here are the photos.

The canisters are huge and the adjustments I can make are almost endless.
They should run somewhere around $1700-2100 depending on car and if you want the rally camber plates or if you want to use your existing ones. I would at least get front camber plates, because with the added ride height you will need more neg camber.

thanks alot
ive heard that the recommendation is to use pillow ball mounts especially on the rear due to angles...
here is the info from the distributer
"The group N mounts are no different in design to stock. Group N
suspension has offset rear top spring hats to deal with the angle. You can use them, we have another customer who did it, we just don't offer warranty on the rears if you don't have pillow ball mounts.
The price for gravel spec with top mounts and adjustable dampening is
$2181us plus shipping from Toronto. If you take off the top mounts
and void the rear warranty the price is $1313us plus shipping.
Shipping is around $50us."
