Has anyone put New Age STi seats in their WRX?
Assuming someone reading this has ... where did you get them, how much were they, and did you do it yourself (if not did they have an issue with the seat airbag removal?)?
Thanks.
Thanks.

If you look in the vendor classified right now ...there is a vendor selling them real cheap....i hate saying this to someone with a higher member number than me ...but a lil search would have helped

I did a search. I just get tired of putting the obligatory "I already did a search and found nothing, so ...".
Search didn't turn up anyone with experiences of buying and owning a STi 7 seat. Neither did your post.
Some vendors selling them, yes. That hardly gives me info on what a WRX owner ended up paying, how the install went, how they feel, etc.
Plenty of people have put STi 6 seats in their RS. Also not my question.
Not saying there aren't threads out there on this, but I didn't find them.

Look in the vendors classified, AVSports has them for 1200.
I'm not sure how the install goes, I believe they bolt directly in. I ordered a set so I'll let you know how it goes.

The seats will probably bolt right in, I'm not sure about the seat belt receiver though. I'm sure it is possible to move it to the other side. You need something to fool the car since the airbag light will always be on with the system disconnected. The only person I've ever seen with the seats in their car was shawrf1? I believe. They were just prohibitively expensive (Vivid wants $2k for F/R) and AV Sports never really advertised their prices. I think people would have bought them for their normal $1400 for F/R had they known about it.

Do the STi seats even have airbags? Euro and Japan are not as hot for airbags as those in the US. Even if they are equipped with them, it's just four bolts for the seat and a plug-n-play plug for the airbags.
And no, I don't have new age STi seats in my WRX, I have STi V6 seats in my RS, but I have a set of WRX seats in my 510, and so I know what the WRX hookup is.
Bolt in. No issues with the airbags since you can do the swap yourself.

the sti seats dont have airbags, which sucks. I am sure if they did though, they would be a lot more expensive than they already are.

Everybody - thanks for all the info.
SoLo OnE - definitely like to hear how it goes for you. Drop me a pm or email or, better yet, do a write-up on it.

I ordered a set also....I will definately do a write up w/ pics. I need to find some STi door panels to match that wicked shade of blue.
Edit: the airbag system needs to see a 3 ohm resistance at the connector to be happy and keep your light off. There is a SST that you can buy at the dealer which plugs right in at the connector and provides that. But, I am remebering something like around $50 a pop for them....you'll need two ;) I may try and rig something up first from radioshack.

Apparentlly those don't work for the WRX. :(
| mr2guru | 07-19-2002 07:26 PM |
Well, I called a local dealer today about purchasing the SST for this. The parts guy said he couldn't sell me any. He refered me to a service guy who said, "We don't turn off airbags!!" In a very rude manner. I told him that I didn't want them to. I just wanted the special service tool that will eliminate the light. Then I asked if he knew the resistance the computer needs to see across the airbag to be happy. (I already know it's 3ohms) I just wanted to make sure. He first said he didn't know. So I asked him if maybe he could look it up. He then got pretty rude and said, " I can't tell you that information." What a bunch of A$$holes. It's not like I wanted them to do it. Geez.

mr2guru,
Next time ask for Jim in parts. Tell him you are on i-club and explain what you are trying to do. I'm sure he will help you out. Did you get a set of seats from AV Sport? I would like to see them when you get them.

Mr2guru,
The guy was just protecting himself. If he tells you any info like that and if you do the mod only to suffer an injury that might have been prevented by an airbag, it's his liability. He could get sued for giving that "advice and instruction." If people win millions of dollars for spilling hot coffee, you can't be too careful, I guess.
But I agree, he should have declined it politely.

Hey bud, just so you know, the STi seats have a better feel and grip than most of the recaro's... recaro's are more for flash, the STi's are for functionality... believe it or not, alot of the toronto chapter members of i-club (the guys who are doing most of the stuff people in the US are only speculating about still), used to have recaro's and sparco's, and then swapped them out for a set of the STi's... I've sat in v.5's and v.6 STi seats and I can tell you they're smooth like buttah and have enough grip for just about anything you could put them through...

Where'd you get that info from? I just put in a pair of the resistors (had to modify the connections a little, but nothing too hard) and BINGO! no more airbag light.

Although I have no riffs against recaro as they make some of the nicest seats I've sat in with the exception of Brides and the Mugen and Blitz seats, the STi's bolt right into a GC8, GD, or whichever chassis, I'm not entirely sure about the rear, I figure they would fit right into a GD, but i cannot safely say that they do with a gc8. I've sold a set of Front/Rear new age STi seats to someone who owns a GD, bolted right in, and I know for sure they'll bolt into a GC8

The new age Sti seats are supposed to be able to bolt into the GC8s, but because they have a higher floor, supposed to end up riding about 1 inch too high.

I would seriuosly have to diagree with this statement. I've sat in many after-market seets and the new STi seats, and the Recaro SRD is still my favorite. Not sure how theycould be considered flash. They have more thigh and shoulder bolster support, and better lumbar support.

Each person is different, and different body types/shapes will prefer different seats. The SRDs are on the small side for bigger/taller guys. That's why you should sit in any seats you are thinking about, and see if you even fit, much less are comfortable.

Ok about the airbag light issue....I have heard the resistor needs to be 3 ohms and I have also heard 0.3 ohms....which is it...at what power (w) rating? at what tolerance? carbon film or wire wound? Does it matter? As you can tell I went looking for resistors today....those are some of the question the guy at the electronics supply store shot me. I had no Idea
Fill me in if anyone knows.
thanks
