Has Anyone Tried This? Overhead Console Light for WRX? part 1

oric20 10-30-2001 03:21 PM

Overhead Console ? for WRX

Has anyone tried to put a new overhead light console?

Like the one for the outback that has the overhead sunglasses' holder?

Do you think the brackets would work, also how about the connectors?

Does the stock one just pop put with stress clips so I can take a look?

thanks everybody! :D

subaruparts.com might have some instructions on how to fit the new one, so maybe it will show you how to take it off as well.

I haven't tried to remove it yet, but it doesn't feel like its mounted that solid. I know there has been posts about connecting radar detector wiring there so maybe you could try a search for that.

good luck,

anyone know the part number for the overhead light with clock for the forester.. would like to see if that fits in the wrx.
128d 11-01-2001 08:10 PM

I actually really like this idea. Without a sun roof it just seems like wasted space. Finally there is something that can make use of it.
oric20 11-01-2001 08:22 PM

ok

here's the deal guys.

Mike at exter, said they have one for the legacy, outback that will match the interior

it attaches with 4 screws, The WRX attaches with 2 screws

I think they can fit but need to ask someone with access to an outback to compare the two.....

any takers?

the part ends up costing about $80 bucks total with brackets...

not a bad deal IMHO

Any pics? What exactly is different about this one other than the sunglasses thingie?
oric20 11-01-2001 09:50 PM

nothing is different......

the color matches and there are two maplights.....with probably the same connectors

but the sunglasses thing is KEY!!!

:D

anyone try?

anyone try this overhead light and glasses holder install?

dan
korpse 03-28-2002 10:09 PM

*BUMP*

I'm interested.
bahboy20 03-29-2002 10:05 AM

hey dude!

Hey dude, dont you wrx owners already have the map light?
you just dont have the glasses holder, right?

I get so annoyed when my girlfriend tries to read something in the dark, and she reaches for the non-existant map light.

Then i have to hear 'what the crap kinda cheap car is this-- no map light and no trunk light???'

ugh

WOw an overhead console with map lights, clock and sunglass holder for a Rex. Sounds good anyone do this? An outside temp gauge would be sweet too.

You could butchure an autodimming mirror for the OAT guage and possibly some lights.
Stripe 04-25-2002 09:54 PM

Has anyone tried mounting that console yet?

I guess this is what y'all are talking about?
TerenceT 04-26-2002 01:21 PM

I'll bite
but i can't see the pics at work
if someone would get me the part #'s
i might be able to pick it up today and do it next week

email me at work with the part#
[email protected]
bahboy20 04-29-2002 10:27 AM

hmm

cant tell if that is the one that has a light.
i was just wanting one with a light, but if it is a light and overhead glasses holder, that would be cool. and I guess I would need a nice sticker to go over the outback one.

let me know what happens if you get hte part number.

if you goto www.subaruparts.com and under the legacy they have just the light (no glasses holder) for liek 35 or 40.

TerenceT 04-29-2002 11:49 PM

Oric20
what model has that thing

parts# or something

i am going to do it
128d 05-02-2002 10:19 AM

I think this was a great idea and I'm wondering if any of you have tried it as of yet?
speedbuggy67 05-02-2002 03:29 PM

What most WRX owners would love is a clock, map lights and possible sunglass holder. Temp would be perfection but prolly impossible. What do you think? any recommendations.

The Outback console attaches to the roof
using a bracket p/n 50833AC000.
I 've seen this part after ordering it
by mistake. I doubt it would fit any Impreza.
Herbie 05-03-2002 02:48 PM

OK, I need to take a trip to the dealer and look for one of these...

I had something similar on my old jeep and I LOVED the sunglass, etc. holder. Hate having to put my shades in the recess below the radio cause they tend to fly out when I go around corners too hard. :p Sort of hard thing to do to expensive sunglasses....

I want this!
128d 05-03-2002 06:36 PM

Does anyone here have a pic of how it mounts to the roof?
mmm3587 05-03-2002 07:31 PM

Truly ideal would be a trip/mileage computer and inside/outside temperature. I was in an '88 528e the other day, and the controls and trip computer were amazing. It was super nice. Somebody should look into a good aftermarket inside/outside temperature gauge, at least. Nothing I've seen integrates well with the interior.

No longer have the Outback bracket. It is a stamped part. Its front edge attaches to the windshield header rail, and the rear edge to the first roof reinforcement rib. So the shape and dimensions are specific to the Legacy. It appears the bracket mounts without welding, but the headliner would have to be removed. There are 4 welded-in nuts on the bracket to mount the console.

jimhoyd- your link is not working.
jimhoyd 05-05-2002 03:06 AM

TerenceT 05-08-2002 12:56 AM

which one should i get?
91 bucks
128d 05-08-2002 04:53 PM

jimhoyd- That thing is the ****! I am ordering mine now! :D

Did we decide whether or not the overhead console would fit in the roof of an Impreza?

Also, I've seen this overhead console on the Forester, 2 pairs of shades here!! I'm assuming fitting of this will be just as possible as fitting the Outback part
128d 08-19-2002 10:08 AM

I say someone just go for it. I don't have a lot of skill in fitting things that don't normaly fit or I would have done this long ago.

aspera 10-21-2002 01:05 AM

They get fuzzy sun visors too! NOT FAIR!:)
digitaltekniq 10-21-2002 10:34 AM

Surely the visors would fit? I HATE the stock visors, they're so cheap and nasty.

Anybody know :

1- If they fit
2- The part numbers?

Thanks!

I had the headliner out of my car last week to install some soundproofing, and remembering my whim to install the overhead console, I took a few pics of the mounting brackets up there.
It doesn't look like my old skool impreza wagon is set up to take even the map light on an RS/WRX.

Heres a close up of the bracket for the rear view mirror.
Actually, since the console is likely to just mount in regular threads, a 'bracket' could probably be made by just gluing the correct thread nuts to the roof.
I'm still keen, but I'm a cheapskate, does anybody know where I can find a wrecked 2003 forester?
128d 10-25-2002 07:40 PM

It's nice to see that people are not giving up on the idea. I still think it has alot of potentioal.
Rapid_Roo 10-06-2003 09:44 PM

I got an email from the good folks at exceter subaru, and they said it could work but wouldnt be a drop installation. Has anyone tried it yet? I am very curious about this.
