Do a search for Scooby Steve on here. His car is sick. It is a Silver STI with no wing and is lowered with Spec-C Springs.

A normal WRX wing would look hideous on an STi. Either S202, stock or wingless.

A person at my mom's job has an STi He has a Normal Wrx wing on it... Looks fine but then it looks funny with the super large scoop up in front.

Super large scoop in front and no wing in the rear.......sounds like a 68 Hemi Dart to me. Those were the days. 25 cents a gallon 101 octane

why would you buy an STI then? This has proven to be worth its while going anything over 50mph. With the stock setup the wing serves a purpose.

I asked where could I find the wing, not whether someone liked it.
By the way, I plan to use the wing. Wings are actually more functional at 140 mph.
Thanks for the help

"Functional" is a really broad term.
I mean, if it provides 1 pound of downforce at 50mph, then yeah, you can call it functional... But The question is whether it's even necessary to have that downforce.

Somewhere I read a thread which states that the purpose of the wing is not so much creating downforce as preventing lift, basically because of the way if affects the air that comes over the top of the car and down across the trunk.
As for the one picture here of the STi with the carbon fiber wing, yuck. :( Someone ruined a nice car with a Civic wannabe wing. At least the original makes a bold statement and looks like it belongs on the car instead of being an afterthought.
Scuba Steve's wingless car does look great. Either stock or wingless as he did are really the only two looks I've seen that I would ever go for.

I will have the best of both worlds. I ordered a wingless trunk :)
Now I just need to get it painted.
Wingless (with spoiler detached), I covered the 16 holes with painters tape.

Anyone have useful numbers? I seem to remember this discussion a while back before the STI (with its ridiculous oversized wing) was available. Stock WRX's do just fine on the freeway without the wing. I would wager there isn't a whole lot of aerodynamic difference between a wingless STI and a wingless WRX, particularly in terms of lift.

Best Idea bar none. It may, might, be easier to sell the car if you have the wing w/it.

Do you know anything about STi aftermarket components? STi produces a CF wing and puts one stock on their S202 Impreza.
So go ahead and blast Subaru for putting a "Civic wannabe wing" on their car.

Scoobysport UK had an aeronautics PhD help with the design of their signature spoiler and guess what, it is positioned in nearly EXACTLY the same spot as the stock USDM STi or UK Prodrive STi spoiler. You don't have to put a batwing on stilts on the trunk to get some functionality out of the spoiler. For a long time the Group A Imprezas had a spoiler half the size of the USDM STi and you don't hear the drivers critiquing the "functionality" of the spoiler.
Look at the Audi TT, it only has a tiny little lip spoiler on the back of it's trunk. You wouldn't think it would have an effect given that the TT has a really short rear deck, but guess what? It does.

That's what I'm saying...haha and hopefully I will never sell this car.
I'll have a winged trunk for the track and a trunk for daily driving with no wing. I had the car up to...ummm...pretty fast and it felt completely stable without the wing. I def want it for the track though.

capaWRX - thanks. i was more concerned about the affects it would have on the track without the wing than reselling it. thats why i will have 2 trunks. still waiting to pick up my new trunk...its sitting at subaru until i can borrow someones suv. subaru wont paint the trunk solo, they want to blend it with the car. i want to see how it goes just painting just the trunk first. some other guys have done it and said it turned out fine.
im still driving around with a taped up trunk :) i just think of them as speed holes.

My dealer told me I can purchase a wingless trunk for $350 painted (and I would keep the winged one, of course). Does that sound reasonable?
| mrxx | 01-31-2004 01:06 AM |
I have a black STi.
I removed the spoiler - it is in my garage.
I replaced the torsion bars.
I bought an LED third light on eBay and put it in my rear window.
I plugged the holes with $10 of body plugs from a body shop, sealed with silicone. Black's good news.
I can replace the wing at any time. I feel more comfortable with 300HP that looks like 150HP, than 300HP that looks like 450HP.
I use to watch the wing vibrate in my mirror as it followed me around. I don't think that there was much air pressure on the wing at freeway speeds. I think that I probably lost more downforce from the lost weight of the wing than from air pressure. Maybe at 140mph it matters.

I guess most of the new STi guys really didn't care for the old GC8's with the V. 5 & V.6 wings. Regardless of how it looks, that wing is classic STi.
| Conduit | 01-31-2004 06:58 PM |
It looked better by far on the old GC8's, though. It looks like the designers ran out of time on the new one. It really could just use some refinement and materials improvements. The new body has a collection of curves and angles, and it's not well-reflected in the wing.
| WanganRunner | 01-31-2004 09:20 PM |
I really like the STi wing, about to get one with the trunk and torsion bars for my 04 WRX in a trade. I think the larger body-colored spoilers fit our cars very well. I'm not a fan of such spoilers on more traditional 2 dr. sports cars though. WRXs and Evos are already sort of garish from the outset, so trying to make it look sleek is a bit futile.
