I just got tint... part 1

AWD>FWD 06-29-2006 04:41 PM

I just got tint...
At a very reputable shop locally. I wanted 20% initially, but he wouldn't take a check for the 20% since 35% is the legal limit in WA. So I got 35%. I have noticed bubbles at the bottom of the rear window that are visible while driving, they catch light and glare, but can't be seen outside, or maybe I'm not looking close enough. And the tint isn't dark enough...I might just pay to have it done again, it makes me kind of dissapointed that I just spent 240 bucks and now will most likely have to pay it again to get darker. The worst part was right after they got done my dad called and told me he could have given them the bank card info and I could have paid him back so I could have had 20%... :(
Paraskass 06-29-2006 04:47 PM

They should fix it for free.
In the meantime, if the tint is still fresh try fixing it with a credit card or something.

Tint can take a couple of days to dry. Also use your rear defroster to make it dry faster. I have 2 tiny little bubbles the width of a sewing needle and I am going to get the guy to redo my windows.
JBravo920 06-29-2006 04:47 PM

Thats a lot to pay for tinting. I got mine done at 20% in cash for $130. There was tiny bubbles at first, but they all went away shortly.
AWD>FWD 06-29-2006 04:55 PM

I'm mostly just dissapointed about the darkness.
I am planning to install a Pioneer Avic D1 nav/dvd double DIN head unit and was tinting my windows so people couldn't see that as well, but I can still see inside the front windows from 35 feet away. I don't want super dark limo tint, but I don't want people to be able to see my head unit clearly and easily from outside...
InfamousDX 06-29-2006 04:58 PM

what brand tint. they're all diff. my 35 madico is dark as ****
AWD>FWD 06-29-2006 05:01 PM

SunTek 35% on there. I will post pics soon. I couldn't photograph the bubbles, the lighting conditions weren't right no matter how many times I moved the car.

wow that is light! lol ....peel it all off then go back and tell them it was peelng :)
tasq 06-29-2006 05:51 PM

The bubbles are normal and will go away in a few days.
FNR32 06-29-2006 05:52 PM

Some of the bubbles will fall out in the heat. I would take it back and if they dont fix it. Stop pay that check FTW

You're going to have him redo your windows because of a bubble that is that miniscule?
rkramer 06-29-2006 06:35 PM

park your car out on a hot parking lot for a couple days, tint needs to age (drys out) and will improve remarkably for the first month or so.

as far as going lower then legal limit, depends on your luck... I'm personally very, very unlucky. the last time I tinted my front windows (to 35%), i made it 3 whole days!!! before i was pulled over for tint. Fix it ticket that time, if you remove it within a week and come back to the station to get the ticket signed there is no record or fine. If you don't it is contempt of court...
AWD>FWD 06-29-2006 06:57 PM

It's very hot out today and I am keeping it outside in the sun. I guess I'll just have to deal with it, since the shop is not wanting to fix the crooked tint or the fingernail marks on the edge there. It can barely be seen from outside, but I can see it when I open the door. I'm so anal about my car too, so this kinda sucks. I really can't afford to re-do the tint either, so whatever.
hornyturbo 06-29-2006 08:03 PM

wait till it gets darker outside and see how u like it
ptirmal 06-29-2006 08:27 PM

240 is a lot...
AWD>FWD 06-29-2006 08:46 PM

I've seen up to 300.
szeny 06-29-2006 08:55 PM

^^anything over 200 better be ceramic tint (blocks heat) and that aint it! thats pricey fror as light as it is.... my buddy got his whole car done herei n az (hottest plce on earth) in ceramic 20% except back window (back window cant bend ceramic, got 7 uv 3m on back) for like $320....his car is black and still stays as cool as my white in the summer
Doctor Subie 06-29-2006 09:32 PM

yah, the 35% is too light...but if it makes you feel any better, I got 20% all around, and you can still see in, especially on a sunny day. I paid like high $300's (?$340 or so, can't remember) for my tint from a shop in Bellevue (PM me with details if interested), cash money. He uses Lumar (?sp) film, not sure if ceramic (I doubt, prob. just metallic), lifetime warranty, and I've got that same 20% on all my cars, no problems.

Alternatively, maybe you can just double-layer your tint? Dunno if that will work...
AWD>FWD 06-29-2006 09:43 PM

Can you get me pictures of your 20%? I dunno, it looks semi-ok now that the sun is starting to go down.
Burncycle 06-29-2006 09:46 PM

I've got 20% on mine and it's perfect! I had Dave down at Solar Reflections do mine. He's a member here on the forum. You should PM him for some advise. One of my favorite things that he did was take the tint all the way to the edge of the glass. It looks factory. He actually tints past the edge and then files the excess off for a super clean look. As for the darkness, you can still see in a little on a really bright day but if it's the least bit overcast (which is most of the time here in Seattle) it looks really really dark. And for the record, I've never had any trouble at night :)

SRP did this tint. They claim the reason that my tint doesn't cover all the window is because that's how their machine cuts the tint now.
RexisMe 06-29-2006 10:03 PM

that sucks...i got 20%.. and i paid 100 for mine, with a lifetime warranty against, fading, peeling, bubbling, cracking, etc.... the guy only takes cash or visa, when you ask him how much he charges, he asks you how you'll be paying. very good at tinting, he's been doing it for about 15-20 years now. tinted the last 4 cars i have owned along w/ many family members and friends. i really dont know why im typing all this, i think its because 100 sounds cheap. but its 150 if you pay w/ visa... anyway, have them lay another 35% on top of it. dont pay to have it taken off. if the man is good he can re-lay it. i did that on my grand cherokee looked nice.
Doctor Subie 06-29-2006 10:05 PM

here's a pic of mine...with teh Advan TC2 rims ;)

Doctor Subie 06-29-2006 10:06 PM

oh, btw, my tint goes to edge of my window as well...
RexisMe 06-29-2006 10:10 PM

OH and whoever said to use the defroster to help it dry faster is WRONG. The defroster lines on the back windows actually hurt your tint. If you look on some cars rear windows you will notice on the defroster lines that the tint is bubbling up around them, it is the defroster lines getting hot and making the tint bubble/warp. The man who has tinted the last 4 cars of mine told me this as well, and i listened and have never had a peeling/bubbling back window in almost 5 years.

I like that tint right there^^^
mountjonas 06-29-2006 11:09 PM

my tint took close to a week to dry out. there was a bubble about the size of a pencil eraser that took it's sweet ass time drying out. maybe it's me, but my tint also slightly darkened over the week.
Paraskass 06-29-2006 11:54 PM

Tint always looks darker up close. (more see through from far away)
Tint always looks darker on darker colored cars.
designfate 06-30-2006 12:19 AM

just tell him you want them to take it off and you want your money back. If there is no sign that says "no refunds" let him know that. That tint is totally unacceptable, for me atleast. It should cover the WHOLE window.

My friend has what they call "California Dark" its dark as hell and no matter how close you are you can BARELY see a silhouette of the interior haha. I dunno what its called for you since you live in WA. :( haha
AWD>FWD 06-30-2006 12:20 AM

We call that "Limo Tint" or 5% tint.
designfate 06-30-2006 12:53 AM

we got that, dunno if its the same as limo.
AWD>FWD 06-30-2006 01:09 AM

There are many types of tint with many names

Mirror finish-Cop killer tint
5%-limo tint-california tint?
Ceramic
Gay fade tint

Lots of others.
kessler89 06-30-2006 12:22 PM

go get that crap peeled off, i got mine 20%, they advertize it as 17% i had the same stuff on my 03 as well.....

Sweet! First banana!
SURPRISE_TR 06-30-2006 06:33 PM

i'm having a place in scottsdale, az do mine for 330..getting 13% charcoal solargard all side windows and back window and 55% on the windshield. is that a bad deal?
Akina 06-30-2006 06:49 PM

There's no frame on the top of the door, all tint will buble eventually.
rkramer 06-30-2006 07:06 PM

tinted windshield? I know AZ is HOT, but is that legal? Tint is never as clear as regular glass either, there is always a little distortion. having to look through it all the time would be really, really annoying. I'm hoping you were talking just a strip at the top maybe? (don't do it, that was popular about 15 years ago!)

I had my CTS' windshield tinted. It looks fine. Keeps the car NICE AND COOL. Next step is to re-tint my WRX.
platinum05 06-30-2006 07:55 PM

5% all around. even have a 5 inch strip on the front window. illegal and kinda ghetto but it helps with picking your nose while driving
EnterTheDragon 07-01-2006 01:02 AM

SRP did mine too, it goes all the way up to the top of the glass as well...
platnumn 07-01-2006 01:32 AM

bubbles will go away
