OFFICIAL: Cyprus Rally Thread, talk about it here! part 1

WRXinWhite 06-20-2003 07:06 AM

Cyprus Rally
So far so good: both Subies in the points after 2 stages:
Tomi 3rd
Petter 4th.

Arai 1st in Production. Too bad Patrick had to retire.

Check this out, the title of the picture that is. Isn't it funny:

Itd be nice to see El Matador leave the dark side.
BOY 06-20-2003 10:18 AM

Tommi droped to 19th due to steering problems. Apparently he stopped for ~4 min
Jfrankon 06-20-2003 10:27 AM

I hate Marcus Gronholm! He is just soo damn good, and soo damn boring! The world needs a more exciting world champ!

Hey Marcus :disco: Lighten up! LOL!

Cypress Rally -- Official Thread Time!
So, to recap, we have 3 Pugs and Petter in the top 4. Separated by less than 14 seconds. Panizzi is doing well on dirt, and Tommi seems to have inherited Petter's usual bad luck.

Edit: Sorry. Didn't see there was already another thread down there. Why isn't it a sticky?

Well, Panizzi does not count for manufadturer points. Another interesting point is that it seems that Subaru finally ended Mitsu dominance in PCWRC. Go Arai!
nKoan 06-21-2003 03:58 AM

Man, Tommi lost 27 minutes on a wheel change...

but it better news, Petter is in First. Only one pug, no fords and three citroens breathing down his neck.

Huuuge gaps in the leaderboard too :)
a10thunder 06-21-2003 09:52 AM

Man, what a tough rally!

- Markko MRTIN (EE)
- Francois DUVAL (B)
- Tommi MKINEN (FIN)
- Freddy LOIX (B)
- Gilles PANIZZI (F)

Leaderboard day 2:

You must have missed Hirvonen, 3rd Ford Factory nominated car in 6th position. That's still good for 3 points. However if everything stays the way it is now, whoever finishes the rally is in points in both groups (A and N).
Subaru will go in front of Ford and still 3 Subies going 1, 2, 3 in PCWRC.

Yes yes, I did forget about Hirvonen. I'm impressed with him too, he's doing supprisingly well in this rally.

But then again, he was ordered not to push it too hard, and that seems to be the key to this rally.
HomerJay 06-21-2003 12:34 PM

It's sucks to see Tommi out w/ mechanicals since he had won so many stages! At least Petter's in first. Like always he's coming on strong in the second half of the season. :D
Idjiit 06-21-2003 04:16 PM

Keep your fingers crossed and hope that Rovanpera plays it safe and doesn't push. He's the sole Peugeot left, so I wouldn't be surprised if they told him to stay put. 25 seconds is plenty to play with if Rovanpera just holds on to second.

the following off phil mills recce update on wrc.com :

For the last rally in Greece, Mills took part in an exercise for Subaru and the FIA where he swallowed a pill that contained a transponder which relayed data about his core body temperature.

The team and the FIA wanted some accurate information of body temperatures, said Mills. It came from NASA actually. You swallowed a pill which had transponder in it and it also recorded the temperature inside your gut.

Tony Lycholat, a research scientist at Prodrive, explained to Motorsport News why they had to go to such lengths or depths.

What we needed to identify is not just the cockpit temperature, but how well the athlete is related to that environment, he said. Its one thing knowing the ambient temperature, but you also need to measure the core temperature.

Er, so where exactly is this transponder now?

I think it is transmitting from a sewer in Greece at the moment, said Phil. The FIA know what the temperature is in the central sewage system in Lamia!
impretza 06-21-2003 07:25 PM

I think that the postions will remain the same tommorrow but I expect Colin to push tommorrow.I'm positive Peter will win if he doesn't hit any problems tommorrow.Subaru finally has the reliability we all needed
WagonMonster 06-21-2003 09:23 PM

With Burns and Gronholm out, Petter's win will really help him with season points :D

GOOOOOO PETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTER!
Shik 06-22-2003 07:42 AM

WOOHOO!!! Petter is the man in Cyprus! A well deserved win for sure.

And Toshi wins Group N(9th overall) followed by two other Subes!

Let's celebrate! :disco:

I was listening to WRC Radio and they said Petter was dedicating the win to Possum Bourne.

They were just playing the "Solberg Song". Pretty funny. I can only imagine a bunch of wery intoxicated Norsemen singing that at a rally.

YES!!!!!!!!:disco:
EJ20K 06-22-2003 12:24 PM

Don't know if you have realised what an awesome result has Subaru had on the Cyprus Rally on the N4 class (the closest to our street cars) .....

1) Arai - WRX ver.8
2) Rowe - WRX ver.8
3) Blomqvist - WRX ver.8
4) Ligato - EVO ver.7

IIRC it is the first event in which Subaru not only wins the N4 but gets the first three spots ..... the N4 class has been dominated 6 years by the Mitsubishi Evos ..... apparently the new WRX STi ver.8 is a better rally machine than the EVO 7/8 :D !!!!!

:D

nKoan 06-22-2003 04:00 PM

I fear for the town that Petter decides to celebrate in tonight. It will probably resemble a tornado passing through after Petter is done with it.

:D
Rattler 06-22-2003 04:09 PM

I guess Petter dumped about a whole bottle of champaign on Tommi when he came over to congratulate him. Tommi was completely soaked.

Interesting quote
From wrc.com:
a couple of punctures on the final stage on Saturday and a bird flying through the air vent and onto Phil Mills lap were causes for concern
fengshui-fu 06-23-2003 01:34 PM

Nice win for Petter. Thats two notches in his WRC belt. But amazingly Rovanpara was able to hold onto second with 3 wheel drive. Amazing how he was losing ~ 1 minute a stage and was able to just squeeze under Loeb's time by 3 seconds. His engineer definitely deserved to be Grist's star of the rally.

What was really cool was the way he drove up sitting outside the car and grabbed the bottle from the Pirelli girl. The only thing missing was to land a big fat kiss on her mouth before driving off.

Yeah, he almost whacked her with the door, too!

The unfortunate thing is that Solberg is going to go down as the winner of a race with extreme levels of attrition. But I think he had the pace to win, even on equal terms. That was a great drive.

Looks like the Citroens are strong, but not particularly fast in those conditions. What's up with McRae?

I was there this week, i just arived home so will have my pictures up soon. I spent the week with an ex WRC driver Pennti Airikkala, so got into some great spots using the VIP passes.

Have a look at http://www.wrc.com/en_GB/Gallery/Video/2003/001/ROVANPERA+ACTION+DAY1.htm you can see me in the first few seconds, i am on the outside of the bend with a union jack flag on my back. I am on the day one TV coverage too i believe.

Brilliant event, i hope they dont drop it next year.

Rovampera had more problems than just his driveshaft, Pennti was chatting with him before the 3rd stage, day 3 and he told him he had to put the engine map into safe mode as it was overheating, so he drove the last 4 stages well down on power.
EJ20K 06-23-2003 03:44 PM

John, could u also comment more on the N4 cars ..... the first three places were occupied by Subaru's ..... :D
johnfelstead 06-23-2003 04:12 PM

Yeh, it was a great result for the Subaru GroupN runners. I was talking to Martin Rowe at the same stage start holding area and he was telling me that the Impreza has come on strong recently, they have had a new engine spec which has given them an extra 100Ft/Lbs of torque, this has made the car much more competitive. He drove the last 4 stages pretty much in preservation mode. making sure he got the finish.

I had a chat with his navie at the end of the rally. we were talking about the championship, Martin lies 2nd right now. They didnt do Argentina, they have to drop one round during the year so chose that one. Toshi isnt doing Germany, so the plan is to try and win that, which will get them in a strong postion to fight arai for the title.

It was great being in the final parke ferme area when the crews came in, one of the most fun moments was when Petter lifted Toshi up to congratulate him, unfortunately my camera stopped working just after Petter arived, so i didnt get any of the shots of that, but it was good stuff.

It was also great to listen to David Lapworth and George Donaldson, David said to George "it feels great doesnt it" when talking about the win just as Petter arived. Those guys really want to win, it isnt just a job to them.
jaybird 06-23-2003 04:18 PM

Oh, here it is! Sweet Rally! One of my favs. Petter kicked but. Very good coverage on Speed! That was the most pissed off I've ever seen Gronholm. Burns DNFs for the 1st time this year. Still in the lead though despite not winning a single event thus far. How, bout Panizzi the Tarmac specialist, he was flying.

John, I was asking u about this, because on NZ only Toshi used the new WRX STi RA spec C ver 8 (long name ;)) and both Martin and Stig were using the bug-eyed ver 7's. Now on the pics I have seen all of them are using the new ver 8, with the new twin scroll turbo (which on stock form gives torque 500rpm earlier than its predecesor), the new tubular oem header (4-2-2), etc.

I hope that the new WRX also does well on Tarmac, as it has shown so far that at least on gravel it is a better machine than the EVO 7's.

Petter is a nut...hes got personality...he will go far in the WRC...very likable guy...im glad he won...just hope Subaru dont sign a big name this year...it would be a shame for them to tell Petter hes not the main guy (i think Makinen is on the way out)
Rattler 06-23-2003 11:56 PM

With FIA's new rule next year of the third entry not being able to have a win in the past 3 seasons it will give Subaru a chance to get a big name back if Tommi retires. I wouldn't be surprised if he does. Carlos Sainz, Colin McRae and Richard Burns are rumored to be talked to by Subaru. Petter really looks up to Colin from his Ford days and I don't think Colin is really all that happy at Citroen. Maybe after Cyprus he is a bit happier though. Colin didn't seem to happy after his BBQ at the last rally. I wouldn't be surprised to see Colin or Carlos back at Ford if the new Focus does well the rest of the season. Richard isn't the center of attention at Pug either so I don't think he is happy even if he is leading in points.

Petter signed with Subaru until '06 last month. :D

Is this what the future for SWRT holds?

I can see it now.. the triple 'S' threat... Subaru, Solberg, & Sainz.

Nice touch with the blue hat!
10th Warrior 06-24-2003 01:43 PM

if subaru doesn't have 3 drivers next year i will be very suprised.

Tommi has just had bad luck. look what he did on Leg 2 until he had to retire: 4 fastest stage times. all he needs is for things to just work out in his favor for a change and he can win, just like what finally happened for Petter this time round. i personally hope he stays on, but if he retires, i hope it would be Sainz that replaces him. not a fan of McRae or Burns. one crashes the other is fragile IMHO. oh, screw it, bring back Juha :)

overall, pretty damn good result for subaru.
1st in WRC
1st, 2nd, & 3rd in GrN. my, how the tables have finally turned in that class.

supposedly Pirelli has some new, better tarmac tires so hopefully subaru can continiue to pester the frogs for the remainder of the season :)
Rattler 06-24-2003 03:04 PM

Too bad Pat Richards isn't doing all that great this year.

oh, screw it, bring back Juha :)
I hear that! I always liked watching him drive for Subaru or anyone for that matter.

I also agree on the CM & RB comment. Sainz & Juha have always been my favorite two drivers in the WRC since I started watching in '99.

Tommi seems to have a hard time overcoming problems. He overcompensates & thus ends up in worse shape. He can drive, just not as consistently as he used to. It also seems the SWRT car can't take his flyin' driving style like the older Mitsu's could... I hope it's not the car. :D
firedog25 06-25-2003 02:36 AM

I pulled this off of www.worldrallynews.com

Petter Solberg is my favorite driver, actually got to see him in action in person at Rim of the World 2001. Real cool dude seems like, not to mention he has team loyalty! And I like what he says at the end of this blurb, I watch rallies not only to see the world's best drivers regardless of team, but to see them mash their cars into scrap!

Cyprus Rally victor Petter Solberg has dismissed suggestions that the event is too slow to justify its place in the World Rally Championship.

Most top drivers feel that the roads are too twisty to be enjoyable (although Solberg's average speed of 66 km/h last weekend wasn't especially low by Cypriot standards) and some team bosses questioned the nature of the route.

"I think you'd have to say losing nine World Rally Cars, it would have to be brought into question," Ford director Malcolm Wilson commented, after both his front-line cars retired within a few metres of each other on SS5. "I'm not blaming the event for the situation we're in: that's our fault. What I'm saying is to lose nine WR Cars, we should discuss it."

But some attributed the heavy retirement rate to cars becoming quicker or inadequate testing rather than the rally becoming tougher and Solberg - who had expressed his enthusiasm for the rally before the start - was quick to defend it.

"We have fast rallies like New Zealand, Australia, Finland, so why shouldn't we have twisty and rough rallies? That's rallying. You need something of everything," the Subaru driver said.
firedog25 06-25-2003 02:40 AM

Also, as much as I'd like to see a great seasoned vet such as Sainz, McRae, or Burns back behind the wheel of a Subaru... I wouldn't mind seeing an all young gun team. Maybe Markko Martin or Sebastien Loeb? Definitely would like to see three drivers next season though, that's what's killing "Our Team" in point scoring. This is my dream team.

Carlos Sainz
Petter Solberg
Markko Martin

Team Subaru would rock then!
Rattler 06-25-2003 02:58 AM

Maybe Subaru will snag Petter's brother up instead of Mitsubishi. I guess his bro won a rally this past week too.

Check out the shirt for sale on Petter's website:

http://en.profilshop.ez.no/imagecatalogue/imageview/52/?RefererURL=/trade/productview/27/10/
jaybird 06-25-2003 01:57 PM

I'd love to see Burns back @ SWRT. Sure he is a whiney bich, but he is Mr. Consistancy. Sainz would be cool to though. That would be similar to when it was Juha and Burns. Is Tommi for sure leaving? Another young gun would be cool also. My vote would be Loeb, but I doubt they'd get him.
10th Warrior 06-25-2003 03:12 PM

Tommi may retire, or he may not. i suspect the 3rd driver will be what's his name, the Italian champion who is offical test driver this year. Then Petter obviously and Tommi if he stays on. If he retires though, there are going to be *alot* of people open for contract for next year, compounded now by the new 3rd driver rule. i wouldn't be suprised if citroen would rather hold onto Sainz and Loeb then McRae. If Burns goes, then it would probably be either Rovanpera or more likely Panizzi into the second spot at pug, which means the other (or both if burns stays) would be available. if somehow subaru got ahold of Panizzi that would be cool. he's come far enough on gravel to be worth while and he could obviously take the impreza a step forward on tarmac.
