I really wish the host would shut up a little more often. It would be nice to actually hear the car when they do the in-car camera. I'm so happy that we finally get a chance to see these cars though. :)
edit: And don't forget about the McLaren F1s!

Hey, the Cusco Subaru snagged 2nd in round 3, with the drivers moving to 2nd place in the points. I think this is going to be on for the next 2-3 weeks in the same time slot...right?
And W T F is a Vemac, anyway?

That was some great racing action. All the races were really eventful in both crashes and passing...I'm definitely keeping the next 3 Mondays of this month clear for JGTC.
Hopefully we'll get to see more of the Cusco Impreza as the season continues.
SPEED CHANNEL, KEEP THE JGTC!
edit- I also want to know what the hell a Vemac is!

Wow, that was some awesome racing! Lots of really cool cars as well; I especially liked the Cusco Impreza (of course). I gotta wonder what Wayne Gardner had to be thinking after the first 2 races! Can't wait to see how the rest of the season plays out.
Good job Speed Channel! Keep it on the schedule!
PS. If anyone knows how the season progresses; please no spoilers.

After playing countless hours of GT2 it was great to finally see those cars on the track. Very good action in that series, and Japan has pleant of beautiful race tracks other than Suzuka.

A few thoughts/follow-ups...
The VEMAC was a very controversial car this year. The GT300 class was designed for cars with a higher production run (Silvias, Imprezas, 911s, etc.), but the VEMAC was a cause for concern because it brought a lot of GT500 class technology to the 300 class. The door was kind of kicked down by a Mosler MT900 to start with though...not exactly a mass-produced car.
How about that TI Aida track, lots of great turns. And Fuji is already a spectacular track; imagine how good it's going to be once they finish remodeling it next year. If you don't know, Toyota now owns Fuji and will be remodeling it in order to try to steal the Japanese GP away from Honda-owned Suzuka.
One other thought...if all of the GT300 cars use air restrictors to limit their horsepower to around 300, imagine the restrictor being used by the Viper...a car that makes way over 300hp STOCK!

A big thank you to speed channel for bringing this to us. Of course, I want MORE though. I would love to see each race in its entirety. That is why it seems like the announcer never shuts up, they constantly cut to an "action" part of the race. None-the-less, very entertaining! That is what racing is supposed to be like!

was anybody else dissapointed by the coverage?
I thought the camera angles were bad, the commentating poor, and the overall race feel was a little boring. Only time I got into it was when the Impreza was leading.
Of course something is better than nothing! I am glad we have the coverage we do, but there is much room for improvement. (although it looks as though Speed bought the coverage from other producers)

I was a little disappointed with the coverage, but I'll take what I can get until they decide to put it on 'for real'. Any coverage is an improvement over no coverage. Mainly, I just wanted the commentator to be quiet so I could hear the exhausts. :D

I thought it was kind of funny hearing the thick Aussie accents pronouncing names like Hironori Takeyuchi and Juichi Wakisaka...
Not the greatest coverage for sure, but remember that we're seeing a 30 minute highlight show...it's hard to translate the feeling of being there when you're just seeing snippets of the race.
I was really surprised when I didn't hear a voice over from Ralph Shaheen, so I'm not going to complain too much...

I too wasn't too bothered by the Aussie coverage. It's a lot more hectic because it's only a 1/2 hour show, but at least he doesn't make any mistakes. I like it better than the DTM or ETCC/FIA GT coverages. I do wish they'll show the track map and a brief desciption of the corners.
What I find surprising is that (lack of) mechanical grip of these cars. I was expecting them to behave more like DTMs with their big wings and supposedly high-tech stuff. But instead they slide around the corners more like BTCCs, which is wonderful in the spectator's point of view!
2 thumbs up.

The announcer pronounced some of those brands and models very odd. Nissan sticks out. I think he also said the Supra was running 4-cylinders?? What? There was also an incredible amount of sliding in their driving style. Do they run street tires?

AFAIK-Toyota intentionally uses a smaller, lighter turbo 4 cylinder to help with weight balance. They can put the engine farther back in the chasis thus helping weight distribution. I believe it's a turbo MR2 motor that they use...not 100% sure on that though.

From what I've read, the Supra race cars use the same inline 4 that the Corolla WRC car used.

Yes, I am pretty sure you are correct about it being the MR2 turbo motor in the Supra. Even 500 HP is not too hard with that motor when you have the kind of budget these guys have...
As far as the coverage, from what I understand, this was the only off-the-shelf program of JGTC coverage already in English. Remember, two years ago, the WRC coverage was only a 30 minute highlight of each rally, and now look what we get!!! If SPEED gets enough feedback to realize we are watching their JGTC coverage, I am sure that it can only get better for next year. They didn't want to spend alot of time/money translating whole races for nobody to want to watch them.
I just pray to god that Ralph Shaheen doesn't do the commentary when the coverage does get better. Man, I hate his voice. My wife makes me turn the volume down because she finds his voice so annoying, and I never get to hear the in-car commentary / engine sounds.

Just sent SpeedTV an email giving them a huge thumbs up on the JGTC coverage. I also dropped another vote to same season coverage of the world-class touring events at a minimum. I'm sick of the best drivers in the world, driving the most advanced production based machines being used as [flamesuit on] NASCAR filler material [/flamesuit on].

I watched it on Monday and boy these races are so much more exicting and entertaining than the SCCA GT races. First off, the battles are very intense esp. between the Honda NSX V6 vs. the Supra I4 turbos. The battles between the MRSs/Silvias in the GT300 was also very exciting. The crashes were great (sorry if I sound too much like an NASCAR fan). And all hail the Race Queens. lol
Can't wait for the rest of the rounds to be shown, since Monday showed rounds 1-3 (30 minutes each).

I still prefer the World Challenge coverage to the what we got of the JGTC. There was some good racing, but they are taking 3 hours worth of passes and crashes and compressing them into a little over 20 minutes. If they could take the race queens and send them to the World Challenge events I would be in racing heaven.

You're welcome! Did you or anyone else catch the new V-6 Nissan put in the GT-R? Does this mean anything for the next gen GT-R? The Supra's and NSX's run different engines than the production cars, so Nissan could still put the V-8 in the production GT-R. I'm definitely V-8 biased, but whatever Nissan does, I'm sure it'll be awesome. Back on topic though, I remember the announcer saying that in car temps were 60C at Sepang That's 140F! Damn that's hot.
| elgorey | 01-21-2003 04:46 PM |
last nights coverage blew. Only 1 new race and 2 "recap" episodes. Pretty stupid to recap what they just showed a week ago, in already truncated form.
| rkkwan | 01-21-2003 04:59 PM |
1. I think it's sad that Nissan has abandoned their inline-6 engine, in favor of V6s.
2. Yes, those two "recap" episodes were very disappointing. I was falling asleep watching them.
3. Does anybody else think the driving skills of some of the JGTC competitors kind of suck? I'm not talking about most front runners, who have shown some great side-by-side racing in the highlights; but the backmarkers. They take absolutely ridiculous risk that makes no sense. Maybe those Japanese drivers spend too much of their time training on arcade games? ;)
In comparison, I think the BTCC and ETCC drivers exhibit the best racing skills in close-combat situations. They grind into each other a lot, but without spinning others or themselves out, most of the time. Many of the JGTC drivers just isn't in the same league, IMHO.

the problem here is that since we are watching 30 minute condensed views of these races, they are only showing the flashy highlights and not the real racing.
if i watched a BTCC highlight reel of all the passing and crashes and spins only, then i prolly would think that too.

Yes, pio!pio! I considered about the highlight nature of the JGTC coverage. And the races themselves are longer too, so there are many more chances to crash.
However, there are still plenty of moves that just looks so ridiculous, which I can't seem to recall in ETCC, or even BTCC. For example, they seem incapable to get through the first corner without a pileup in almost every race (or at least it seems to me). Then you have that Viper trying to get going backwards and hit the Supra headon. And Paulo Montin in the Supra hitting the Skyline in Sepang. Those look [B]so[/B] ridiculous. [Though Montin is also an international F3 star, not just "another" JGTC driver.]

It's a derivative of the 3SGT (their racing version). The engineers always said that the MR2 engine and this one were "similar" but would not elaborate.
Toyota initially used the engine package that TRD-USA developed to win the GTP championship when the rules allowed turbos. The engine we used was based off of the 3SGTE except we needed some internal mods to hold the initial 600+ hp and 580 ft-lbs torque with restrictors. It was renamed the 503e for our use. So different were the blocks that a new batch was cast every year that we ran.
Their current engine produces about 500 hp (that's what they told us then) but the torque curve is far different (lower) and less brutal. The engine build and electronics was more traditional.
They opted for this engine because they could make as much hp as the 6-cyl but with a lighter engine package and, as was stated, you could put the motor further back.
If I'm not mistaken, you can buy the current engine package from Tom's Toyota including the computer but I don't know how much it would cost these days.
That Sube looked really really good...
Does Tamiya make a plastic model of that car?

A couple of comments after watching last night's races -
1. I was about to think the drivers are getting their acts together with a relatively "clean" race for most of the Round 5 at Fuji. But then all hell broke loose, and it's back to all the rough driving, punting people off, etc...
2. Does anybody know what's the deal with the new Skyline engines? From the final results page, I saw that it switched to a 2.0 V-6 Turbo, as has been reported. But then at either Mine or Motegi, the final results show a Skyline with the old 2.8 I-6. What's the deal?
Howard - Think "Crocodile Hunter". :D

I would also like to see what the heck they do to make the 400+ HP Viper kick down to 300 hp, maybe they have a rev limiter that stops it at 2500 rpm or something? :)
Also it seems that yellow RX7 gets shat on in a lot of the races... getting hit by people doing stupid things when it was just minding its own business.
And seeing that orange Silvia makes me want one...
I'm intentionally not looking up the results from last year so as not to ruin the suspense, so no spoilers!
