Maine Forest Rally Video part 1

Maine Forest Rally Video

Well, we blew a turbo and dnf'ed after SS8 but we were having a lot of fun until then! The conditions were great for video, and I have some excellent footage. To start, here's a 20 sec clip of a close call.

Fish 07-28-2002 02:44 PM

Jon, good show none the less.

I know Webkris has vid of that same close call, I'm sure you'll see it once he returns.

I've got some pictures of your car running the second day.
give me a moment to post them.

Strike that.. I've got one pic...
and it's not even a good one.

I was only there for one day and my camera is slow.. so I only get one chance per car.

just watched the video, that's insane that you managed to skip off the top of that rock opposed to being abruptly stopped by it. Kris's vid from what I understand is with you coming at the camera, from a little bit up the hill.
Jon Bogert 07-28-2002 02:57 PM

Wow--gotta love that ride height! This year we used our "Safari" settings and drove right over all the rocks. :D
Fish 07-28-2002 03:03 PM

would have been a good pic, stupid foliage.

how were things compared to last year?
it was less dusty this year thankfully.

did they run the night stage this year?
Jon Bogert 07-28-2002 03:47 PM

Conditions couldn't have been better. Not too much dust and smoother than last year. The sun stayed behind the clouds quite a bit, which makes driving in a three layer polyester sweatsuit a bit easier, too.
Rovah 07-28-2002 06:01 PM

Jon,
Sorry I didn't get to find you during the event! :-( I had the digital dash in the car as well(although just powered and not actually sensing anything but battery voltage!).

Sorry to hear about your car troubles.:-(

If anyone has pics of our new rallycar, "Steel Tulip," #912, please let me know!

Cheers! John
Thug 07-28-2002 06:03 PM

John,
I believe I got a pic of the silver tulip. I'll let you know when I get them back from getting developed.
Fish 07-28-2002 06:23 PM

Rovah, describe the car a little for me.

let me see if I have a picture of it

It's a dark blue/grey(correction, steel) 1.8L Impreza w/tulip note stickers on it.
Snowrider 07-28-2002 07:20 PM

Jon that was pretty sick, bet that spectator just about Layed mud in his pants. Good driving to recover that. I only got to see SS2 as I stayed about an hour and a half away and never got ahold of info on times and locations of the rest of the events. got lucky finding SS2 just follow the long lines of scoobies.
Rovah 07-28-2002 07:31 PM

Nate and Fishguy,
I don't mean to steal Jon's thread here, but The "Steel Tulip," is silver metallic with reflective tulip stickers on it. Gold rims. #912. Any pics would be appreciated.

Cheers! John
Jon Bogert 07-28-2002 08:22 PM

Doh!--John, I'm sorry I missed you. Believe it or not, once I got in "rally-mode" I completely forgot about the Iceman. :(
Rovah 07-28-2002 08:24 PM

Jon,
I actually forgot about it too! ;-)

Cheers! John

Hehe..you should ask Jgard who that guy is. He knows him really well.;)

Keith and webkris has all my pics. I took close to 1000 pics, so I should have a few good ones of most people in there.;)
Jon Bogert 07-29-2002 03:53 PM

I found the guy in the stream:
The Celica All-Trac almost killed me crossing the bridge on stage 2. At least I think I got a great photo out of it.
ROFLMAO
Jersey Mike 07-29-2002 04:09 PM

You think thats bad try a black audi who can't see a green pole on the first stage in the rec center. I've never seen that many people run that fast in my life. This was the first ProRally I've ever been to, I've never felt so alive or getting killed at the same time
JGard 07-29-2002 04:27 PM

Jon, I just wanted to let you know that I was about 10 feet from you when you almost went down into the river. I was at the corner of the bridge on the same side, but before the river.

We really thought you weren't going to make it. When I could see the bottom of your car, I thought for sure you were going to smash into those rocks.

Nice job pulling out of it, though...even if you did almost kill one of the cameramen. :p
JGard 07-29-2002 04:38 PM

oh, and the "who is this guy?" is the guy that rear-ended me on the way up to the rally.

for more detail on that, check out my thread in NESIC :)
Stripe 07-29-2002 10:28 PM

Jon, I got a decent picture of your car. I will post it tomorrow :)

Just posted Magalloway--very twisty, lots of sideways fun! Be warned, though, it's 126MB for twelve and a half minutes.

Jens 07-31-2002 11:39 AM

To spectators who think near death experiences are cute:

You might not care if you live or die, and others probably don't care either. However, you could demonstrate some level of adulthood by staying out of dangerous areas.

When spectators start dying you won't think it so cute. Why? Because, rallying in the U.S. will die with them.

If you need thrills try jumping out of airplanes, heroin, or Russian roulette.
Jon Bogert 07-31-2002 11:52 AM

Hi Jens,

Don't be so melodramatic. :D

FWIW, there has already been some pressure to pull that video down. I already modified the end to remove the still of Tan in the stream.

I agree that spectator control was not so good in Maine. I do not believe the answer is to corral the fans like mindless NASCAR hoards into fenced viewing areas 100 yards from the action. Instead, train the most enthusiastic fans (like all these wonderful Subaru owners :) ) as marshalls, give them a vest and let them teach others where to stand safely. If those folks in the bridge video were 10-15 yards back, and a bit further from the exit of the turn, that would be, in my opinion, perfectly safe.

Pressure? From whom? Let me guess :D

Spectators are good, even if they do like Subarus ;) , but they need to use common sense. They are not just putting themselves at risk; they are putting rally in the U.S. at risk.

No melodrama here....jus' da facts.
jblaine 07-31-2002 09:25 PM

Jon, that Magalloway video is nuts. That camera rig you have is perfect. You looked to be going damn fast to me. Nice work. I can't even imagine what it's like to do that.
Jon Bogert 08-02-2002 11:04 AM

Webkris just posted his video: http://www.clutchdrop.com/gallery

Awesome server you've got there. Downloading at about 375kb/second...

Great footage too. Thanks so much for putting it up.

Thanks for putting those up! Looks like it's just after a flying finish sign.

Cheers! John
RRR-K2 08-05-2002 03:04 PM

Has anybody thought of sending the videos of John's little bridge excursion to something like "Real TV?" This is the kind of stuff they just crave.

:D
Jon Bogert 08-05-2002 03:15 PM

Hmm, realtv.com fired a virus at me, so I guess that's not it...

I think certain people would be really annoyed if my video--or Kris's--made it onto the public airwaves.
RRR-K2 08-05-2002 03:29 PM

Nobody has to tell them it's from the states. Just tell them it's from some wacko European country, like GREECE (right Daphne ;) )
Jon Bogert 08-05-2002 05:26 PM

Oh, it's you, Matt. :)
Snowrider 08-12-2002 02:14 AM

jon any ss2 footage?
Jon Bogert 08-12-2002 09:18 AM

Yes, but I drove 2 pretty poorly, so I haven't rushed to do that one. Anything special you're looking for along the stage?
