In-Car Video Clip Sears Point part 1

In-Car Video Clip Sears Point
Hey everyone,

Here's a short in-car video clip from Sears Point last weekend. It shows me being passed by a little Honda CRX. Listen to that thing scream, though. It's Andy Hope running in the H1 Honda Challenge class, which allows a ton of modifications from what I understand. I'm sure he's got a bit of a weight advantage, as well;) Our car weighs in at 3,348 pounds, which is only 52 pounds less than a Winston Cup car and we're on 225/45 series tires! Oh, don't forget about the 52mm restrictor plate. And understeer...

It's a big file (20M) because the two camera view is a bandwidth hog.

Gary was that a CRX went flying pass by you?:p

Do you let go of the cluch everytime u down shifting?
GarySheehan 10-30-2003 01:22 AM

Yep, that was a CRX!

I don't understand your question. Are you asking if I declutch through every gear? If so, yes. Actually, I double clutch every shift, so it's two declutches for every downshift.

In the video you can just make out my left knee. Watch what it does during the downshifts.

TV3WRX 10-30-2003 10:23 AM

Hi Gary. Even with all the weight you carry, your lap time is right there with the SpeedWC touring cars, around 1:55 or so. Pretty good! That CRX must have a GSR or type R motor, or overbored ZC. With any of the three, those things are so freaking fast and nimble.

I thought the understeer problem had been eliminated with the 70/30 center diff and giant rear bar. No?

Are you going to run USTCC next year?
drees 10-30-2003 10:30 AM

Great video Gary and nice driving!
GarySheehan 10-30-2003 11:04 AM

TV3WRX,

We had to chuck the 35/65 Cusco diff at that race. That diff, while biasing 65% of the torque to the rear, is an open diff. With all the elevation changes while cornering, I was just roasting away the inside front tire with wheelspin. We reverted to the stock diff and the wheelspin disappeared, but we still had understeer issues.

TV3WRX 10-30-2003 12:06 PM

Well, that explains it, then. Looks like the car was handling very well in the previous vid from Phoenix, with almost no understeer, so too bad you had to ditch the dif at infineon. Good job, in any case.

Excuses, excuses... that Honda is awesome.

Though AWD might criple a FWD in the corners...guess not...I blame the driver :p

I blame the driver, too. It's been my biggest complaint all year. I keep telling the team manager, "Our driver is a hack!" He just tells me to shut up and keep sweeping...

AVI is preferable, but MOV and MPG work as well. Anything other than WMV. :)

MOV seem to eat up my resources i dunno why.. lock my pc up

Yellow hood scoop? What does your car look like now? It may be old news, but it's been about a year since I've seen you race.

I went to your site to see if there were any pics of what your car looks like now, but couldn't find any. I seem to remember that you took some front end damage earlier this year and I'd been wondering if you changed the look of your WRX after that.
GarySheehan 10-30-2003 05:02 PM

Here's what the car looks like now:

Holy cow! I noticed the yellow hood scoop in the video, too, but didn't realize you had swapped out the entire front end.

I still prefer the bug-eyed look, but I know I'm one of the minority. :)

Can we get some interior shots?

What tranny gear ratios were you running there?

Rich
nate49509 10-31-2003 08:22 AM

Nice video Gary!
GarySheehan 10-31-2003 10:41 AM

This was a Subaru of America mandated reskin. I like the bug-eye look, too, but I think the car looks meaner this way.

Got some comments about the yellow hood scoop at Sears that were negative. Any comments? If people think it's ugly, I'll change it back to blue.

SOA mandated reskin, wish they would provide me with one of those. I like the yellow scoop.
TyrannoSullyRex 10-31-2003 10:48 AM

Good stuff. That CRX walked on you after the pass, damn. Was there a Spec Miata race at the same time? How many classes were on the track for the race?
GarySheehan 10-31-2003 10:57 AM

There were all of the classes in Honda Challenge (H1, H2, H3 & H4), the two classes of Nissan SE-R Cup and Spec Miata.

so you hit the clutch twice and downshift
hit twice again and down shift to the lower gear?

do u down shift from 5-4-3-2 or 5-3-2

hmmm
thechickencow 10-31-2003 12:26 PM

Wow...

That CRX just turns in amazingly. Pretty cool.

Craig W 10-31-2003 01:22 PM

I'm pro- yellow hood scoop.

BTW, Is it an STi scoop? Would that be allowed? Then again would it be worth it?
Silver Bullet 02 10-31-2003 05:15 PM

Hood Scoop: Who cares what it looks like as long as you are winning. ;)

Tranny: Gary, how much peak torque does your car produce? I hear you are running the stock tranny (Trey Cobb). Is that still the case? Have you destroyed any gears yet?

Civic: It hurts me to see a Civic pass a WRX :furious:
thechickencow 11-01-2003 01:03 AM

Hey Silver...

See that big "KAAZ" on the hood scoop. Maybe its the kaaz gearset?

tcc
Trey Cobb at Cobb tuning told me about two months ago that Gary was using the stock tranny. I know Gary used some Kaaz diffs at one point but I'm thinking he's using Quaife front and rear now with the Cusco center diff.

sscguy 11-03-2003 11:16 AM

Double-clutching goes like this: Press in the clutch, shift to neutral, release clutch, press in again, shift to desired gear, (rev match?) release clutch. Correct?
drees 11-03-2003 11:19 AM

The rev match happens when you are in neutral with the clutch out, but otherwise correct.
Spooled 11-03-2003 05:13 PM

Great video Gary! I say change the scoop back to blue.
MattDell 11-03-2003 08:24 PM

Any word on getting this in a Mac-friendly format?

-Matt
Loser 11-03-2003 08:44 PM

A follow up on the double-clutching...

What's the advantage of double clutching along with rev matching on a downshift as opposed to just single clutching (if that's even what it's called) along with rev matching?

Loser 11-03-2003 08:48 PM

Oh, and by the way, is there heel-toe action involved to further complicate matters?
scoop 11-04-2003 04:46 AM

Gary, you kick ass. I want to buy the DVD of this race when you finish it up. Same for the upcoming race at Laguna Seca.

The first time I was at Sears Point, I was running 1:53's... but that was with the track in NASCAR configuration (turns 4-7 eliminated). Man, I'm slow.

Keep up the good work!
sscguy 11-04-2003 01:06 PM

On a double-clutching downshift, the whole thing would be done while braking, so yes, heel-toe would be used (if you haven't already, LEARN IT!). For upshifts, you wouldn't be using the brakes so it wouldn't be used. As for advantages, I always thought it was used when synchros weren't present in the tranny, so you'd have to match the speed of the engine to the speed of the gears, and the double clutching makes that whole process of engagement smoother. There must be something else to it though, as I think Gary's running a stock tranny, which would have synchros (unless it's a BPM-built gearset or something?), in which case I thought it would be unnecessary for that. Thoughts?

AVI isn't a codec. Its just a file format that can contain many different codecs.

WMV is a great format. The quality is excellent and the encoding software is free and easy to use. I use .WMV's myself because of this. MPEG1 is the most compatible format and the encoders are free, but file sizes are huge. MPEG2 you have to pay for an encoder (at least I haven't found a free one). Quicktime .mov, bleh and I don't think that is free.

Can you suggest a high quality free encoder in a more popular format?

And there must be a .wmv viewer for macs.

Including WMV (which confusingly is both a codec and a container)...
