(In-Car Video!) The Pain In Maine...

... stays mainly in my brain. :D
I'm now 0 for 5 this year. Maybe I should take up knitting instead of racing?
SEE the rock emerge from the weeds near the exit of the corner...
HEAR me drop the F-bomb as I realize I've just DNF'd my 5th in a row...
FEEL the impact as the car, missing a wheel, decides to go left...
The crash.
Also, here's:
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
The crash was on stage 3. Then I broke a drive shaft on the start of the ClubRally Saturday morning, so it was a complete washout for me. Such is rally I guess.
Cheers,
-Doug

Ouch. There were certainly lots of big rocks lurking just off the road at Maine. We camera guys cleared out quite a few car-breakers from the inside of the hairpin at 3.5mi on SS7, as well as a couple that the cars dug up. There was one BIG one we coudn't get out though. I think it killed the Escort Cossie's gearbox - he had trouble getting a gear after nailing it hard with his skidplate...

Works for me on the newest quicktime....
Sorry about the damage.
"Medium right don't cut" doh! Looked like you stayed off the weeds pretty well and that one was right on the edge. I've done that a few times on CMR3

whos glad that autox course and race tracks have no big rocks on the inside of turns

Wow. Great videos! You guys are crazy!!!
Sorry to see the incident.
My favorite video part:
Stage 2:
"Co-driver": Caution rocks in road
few seconds go by
Driver: "No shi%&"
Accelerate!

That big one could have sunk the titanic. I think we were only seeing like 2% of it.

It's encoded with MPEG-4 video. As far as I know, that's standard with at least the latest QuickTime player. The audio is nothing special but I don't recall what I encoded it with. I can try Sorenson compression if you like. I don't really know what compresses best and what looks best and so on. I think the more compressed/smaller stage videos are kinda crappy, but then again I've been playing with the raw DV footage. I didn't want to end up with 400 meg video clips for y'all to download ya know?
The rock wasn't really visible until you had already committed to the corner. Then just as you had the exit line laid in, there it was. You can see me twitch when I see it, but there was really nothing I could do at that point. The next 6 or 7 cars hit it almost exactly like I did, but apparently my ball joint was on its way out and that hit was too much for it. The Canadian in the Hyundai blew a tire on it, which later on tore the hell out of his fender as it disintegrated, but nobody else seemed to have any problems that I could see from my rock star vantage point :D
Even though the impact tore the wheel off the car, and the tire had a huge bulge in the sidewall, it was still holding air. I really like those Pirelli rally tires... I wish they were cheaper.
Let me know if you want different encoding or more frames/sec. or full size isntead of half size on any of those. The footage is still sitting here on my hard drive so it's not a big deal to re-render some other formats. Just don't ask for Windows Video though, because I'm on a Mac.
Anybody know a good motorsports shop that can engineer me some new uprights with better ball joint strength? And I need some new track rods, and new drive shafts and new CV's, and a dozen new Speedline Corse wheels... :(
Cheers,
-Doug

Doug, can you elaborate a bit on your video/audio setup? I'm looking to get something in my car that can stand up to the vibration of rally without crapping out. Your videos always seem pretty good quality, so you're doing something right.
I'll have to check these out once I'm done working tonight.

We came flying over a crest shortly after DCH tore off his wheel.
There was a triangle out before the crest, and after it, there was D, pointing at a huge rock in the ditch and shaking his finger at it! (yello subie stuffed into the weeds not far away)
Don' go there, he said.
thanks, we didn't!

Certainly, Jay. I have a Peltor FMT200 intercom which not only has separate driver and co-driver volume adjustments, it also has an audio out jack which I run directly to the left channel (mono) audio input jack on the video recorder. The camera in this car is a Mintron wide dynamic range model CCTV/security camera. I was trying to get something that would deal with the high contrast between sunlight coming through the windshield and the dark interior of the car. The camera runs off 12VDC and puts out S-Video and composite but I use the S-Video. The camera has I think 480 lines of resolution and a pretty good low lux number (like 0.07 or something I believe) so it works pretty well at night. I mount it solidly (no rubber doo-thingies) on the roll cage. The answer to the contrast question was solved not by the high-tech camera, but by a simple camera neutral filter (N4 I believe). I adjust the filter so it covers just the windshield part of the picture and not the interior. I run a DC auto-iris lense, not sure what the focal length is. I used one of the many field of view calculators on the Internet to guestimate what lense would give me most of the windshield according to where I had the camera mounted. The video recorder is a Sony GV-D1000 MiniDV recorder with an LCD screen and it's shock mounted (but not quite good enough yet) where the rear seat would normally be. The recorder uses some whacky 7.2VDC or something, and to get that I went to Radio Yak (you have questions? we have batteries) and hard-wired it to the part of the power cord that plugs into the recorder. There's a cheaper model MiniDV recorder without the LCD, but it's handy to have so you can check and make sure everything's working and aimed properly and your crew chief didn't bump the focus when he was crawling around back there. There's no "stabilization" or anything. As I said the camera is hard mounted and the recorder is shock mounted, and being digital it's a bit more resistant to the impacts and vibration although you can still get it to skip a beat on occasion (start of stage 1, for example). A Digital8 recorder would work well too, but I like the MiniDV and it records I believe up to 500 lines of resolution. I tried external mic's before and they don't seem to like the extreme noise levels but the Peltor feed seems to work pretty good.
So check out www.supercircuits.com and pick a camera with 12VDC power, and as many lines of resolution as you can afford. You don't need to go as low a lux rating as I did, I went overkill because my camcorder has a lux rating of like 7 and wouldn't work for crap at dusk or at night. I'd guess a lux rating of 1 or 0.5 or something would be sufficient but I don't know for sure. Pick a manual focus auto-iris lense (DC iris, not video iris!) in the focal length you like for the camera (probably a C or CS mount lense- some cameras take either or have an adapter ring) and make the S-Video or composite decision based on your recorder of choice. I'm sure someone can figure out a way to hack other Peltor or Terrortrip intercoms to get audio out, but the FMT200 is a really nice intercom plus it's already done for you. Power for the recorder is being discussed on Spetznaz Stage I believe and there are a couple of good options depending on how much electronicz you feel up to. Mount all the stuff, and away you go. You can get some great video by mounting the camera on the A pillar if your cage permits and you don't have to deal with the whole bright window/dark car issue although a neutral filter might still give you better video as the bright sunlight can wash out the CCD or the iris tries to close down so small that it can't make the proper adjustments and you get sort of a bright/dark/bright/dark video image. I like to use the video to see what I did right or wrong so I leave it just behind the seats in the middle of the car. It takes some fiddling around to get the back focus set, and the light level adjusted properly, and you may have to mess with it again for night stages. But I really like having the video as a tool plus you can show everybody on the Internet what a tool you were when you go for a ride through the tulies... :D
Oh yeah as for cameras, look for something like Sony's ExWave HAD chipset in the camera. I have a generic one with that chipset and it also gives pretty good low light response. I found a wired remote from "RaceCam" that's way too damn expensive for what it does, but it plugs into the LanC port on the recorder so I can start and stop the video from the driver's seat. You'll want to test whatever you decide to use for a remote though, as the same remote doesn't work at all with my Sony camcorder even though it has a LanC port too. That's about all I can think of right now. Feel free to ask more questions any time.
Cheers,
-Doug

Ah yes, the scene of the crime (after sweep yanked us out of the puckerbrush). The only thing holding the wheel to the car was the brake line, which is apparently indestructible and reminds me that I need new brake lines too. Thanks for posting the pics, I'll add them to my scrapbook of disasters. :)
The rules state that you put the triangle on the side of the road where the car is, but I really thought hard about putting one on the inside where the rock was too. I didn't know if I was being distracting by pointing out the rock or not, but I didn't have a sign that said "SEND BEER" so I had to do something, right?
An upside to all this carnage is that nearly crashing doesn't phase me at all any more (as in my little moment earlier on stage 3 where I realized the "... tightens to K over small crest" was the crest I was staring at and I was still in 5th gear - a fine example of a "save" where you rotate the car under braking, bang down two gears, stand on the throttle and hope for the best), and I even have time to be disappointed with myself now before I completely leave the road (hence the swear word when I knew I was done for). But hopefully at some point the learning how to crash well will end, and I'll actually finish another event.
Cheers,
-Doug

Checked out the video, bummer! I've managed to go slow enough that I can turn out of the way so far, but when you're pushing hard its a lot different. Eventually I'll be there!
OK, so something like this camera:
http://www.supercircuits.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=SSC-M383&variation=&aitem=8&mitem=22
With a lens like this? (I'm a bit confused on which lenses - fixed length, manual iris?):
http://www.supercircuits.com/store/prodinfo.asp?number=CML4MMIF&variation=&aitem=3&mitem=10
Could I ghetto rig this up with a normal old crappy VCR or camcorder to get started until I can afford or figure out which dv vcr I'd want? I've got a terrorcom right now so I'd have to figure out some way to grab audio (upgrading to peltor is a "maybe next year") thing.
Need crew or help at Ojibwe? I'm looking for an excuse to make the trip up and don't have the funds to do both Ojibwe and LSPR, but I'll be at LSPR :)

Nice driving too! You've got some great speed. (that rock jumping out at you was unfair:)
Thanks for sharing video cam setups. That is a great setup you have.
I've been using a bullet cam from chaseCAm with some success on autoX's.
(see here: http://www.skuttle.com/sccaautocross.html )
But I think you have more options and better clarity with a setup like yours.
Great stuff.

That's a shame Doug, especially since I was talking to your parents while working the spectator area about 1.5 miles from the end of the stage (at Bogert's Bridge). The radio car was basically across the road, so we could hear them call off the car #'s as you started, but when whomever it was that started after you (ACP I believe) came though and you didn't :(
Your parents are really nice, but why did you drag them half way across the country for their first event? I mean, isn't there an event closer to home that they could go to? I seem to remember something, what was it called? Oh yeah, OJIBWE ;) And, are you sure those are your kids? ;) ;) One of them seemed a lot more interested in his GBA than rally cars sliding sideways across a bridge and blasting by less than 20' in front of him.
Better luck next time!

Jay, that camera is monocrhome so unless you dig the retro black & white look, you should find a color camera :). Something like this (330 lines resolution) or this (480 lines) would work very well. For a lens, you'd want a fixed focal length (variable focal length is a zoom lens) auto-iris, something like this.
You want to make sure you match the lens with the size of the CCD in the camera. For example you can get 1/4", 1/3" or 1/2" CCD cameras (bigger CCD usually means better performance) and you need to make sure the lens is sized for the CCD or it doesn't work right. If you ask the camera store dude for a 4mm DC auto-iris lens for whatever camera you decide on, they should be able to get you the right one. Assuming of course that 4mm is what you want. 1/3" CCD is a pretty common size, 1/2" is rare, and 1/4" is usually in the lower end cameras.
You could bolt a VCR in your car, sure. But it probably won't like the vibrations much. Any type of digital recording (Digital8 or MiniDV) will work best plus they usually have an IEE1394 Firewire port on them so you can yoink the video straight into your computer.
JC I sent the tape in to the SpeedTV guys yesterday. I can probably make you another tape off my computer, or shoot you the raw DV files on a data DVD (the stage 2 video is the largest at 1.7GB). Let me know which way you prefer.
Jeremy did you say something? Cuz I wasn't listening... :D (co-driver joke!)
Thanks for the kind words, Mr. Powers. I've got plenty of room for improvement left, I just need to finish some events so I get more seat time. Seat time is the key.
Matt those were Scott's parents (in-laws actually), not mine. He brought his kids with and they came out to manage the tribe as well as stand in the woods. We found that it's a bit too much to have to deal with entertaining the kids while trying to concentrate on rallying so I instituted a "no kids without dedicated babysitters" rule last year. It worked extremely well I might add.
Cheers,
-Doug

Cool Doug-
I guess I just saw the exwave part and thought it was color. Basically I'm thinking for the initial ghetto stuff I'll maybe find the family's old unused video camera and hook a camera/lens into it (just use the camera as a deck). Eventually I can upgrade to a vcr like yours, I'm sure its much better (but much more money that could/should be spent on actual essential stuff like tires).

camera stuff

Jay,
I sell camera stuff in the normal price range, not Doug's.
All rally-tested and decent, not great but good enough.
see it at:
www.randyzimmer.com
The newest lens is cheaper but worse at night and dusk (Maine ss4) - nice in the day.
The older one is less dust and water resistant but better at night.
I have battery eliminators, remote lanc buttons and digi8 cameras.
I also wire Terraphones for navi-sound output.

In-Car audio/video goodies

Jay,
The Terraphone Pro series intercoms have a separate audio-out jack so you can feed navvie babble (and incoherent driver responses) directly into your cam or recording deck. The mid-range and higher-end Peltor intercoms have this feature as well, with the additional advantage of better output level control.
For Maine, we installed a new Terraphone Pro Plus intercom (Peltor compatible) with audio out jack, and the PBS film crew guys who mounted cams in our car were having some issues with borderline low sound levels on tape. There's an audio output attenuation switch on this unit (which may have been the culprit), but not dedicated level control. We'll see in another event or 2 how this works out.
The Terraphone Pro and Peltor also have full duplex capabilities, which means that both navvie and driver can babble simultaneously... so viewers will know who screwed up and when!

Nick I'm pretty sure you can have that fender if you really want it. Are you going to bolt it to your Nissan? :)
As for repairs, I need a new fender with paint (have one in the garage already- I was planning on crashing), have to repair the strut for a couple hundred probably, the control arm is fine as it's Group A and solid as hell, mebbe bent the front swaybar links, new brake line, rotor has a gouge in it from a rock, new left headlight thanks to the trees... I dunno exactly what it'll run, but I'd guess a couple grand to four grand depending on whether or not I can salvage the upright.
Of course I had fun while I was running. It's quite the feeling to be humming along those gravel roads, getting the car to do what you want instead of what it wants. The problem is occasionally it does what you tell it to do, and not necessarily what you want it to do. Sorta like computers.
Randy's been making videos long before me so he's got a lot more experience with different setups. I'd definitely check out what he has to offer. What do you use for a LanC remote Randy? That RaceCam thing is nicely done, but it's like $300 or something equally absurd. It almost made me bust out the PIC micro stuff and do it myself since I found some LanC documentation on the Internot. By the way Randy, I like the "It certainly does!" comment from your SS8 tape. :D
Jay I'm not running Ojibwe because I don't have enough spare parts to make it worth my while. I'm down to my questionable drive shafts & CV's and I don't want to go through all the trouble to show up and DNF on the start again. Lauchlin will be running the #2 car though, so I'll be there in a support roll for him. I'm not sure if we need another body or not, but I'll check with Parker (crew chief) and let you know. You're welcome to come hang out with us if you like, no matter what.
Cheers,
-Doug

If you're looking for fully sponsored drivers... you'll have to look to another continent, or the WRC. Not the SCCA. Whether that's fortunate or not is debatable.

Nice vids, too bad about the car.:(
| dch | 08-05-2004 11:42 PM |
No I don't mind the asking, and yes I'm funded out of my own pocket. Luckily computer geekdom in a credit card transaction processing niche combined with retaining bachelor status has allowed me to waste almost all of my discretionary income on my favorite passtime. Apparently I just feel I need to make it harder on myself by continually banging up the car this season. But I figure you only go around once, twice depending, so why not pick something you really like to do and just go nuts with it.
Nick that's going to be one wrinkled-arse misfitted '04 lookin' GC8 Impretzel, it is... Plus the sweep workers usually claim all the real choice wreckage. Remember the sweep guy from Oregon yelling across the service area: "I got the wheel!!!" with all his buddies cheering? I wonder what they do with this stuff sometimes, but if it makes 'em happy and I don't have to haul it to the dump then more power to 'em.
Cheers,
-Doug

Uhm, actually Morgana Morganadana, they're following YOU around. Scott would never claim to be an adult, and he's the one following me around, and around, and upside down, and into the trees... :D
Are you flying into Bemidji or are we going to retrieve you and your cameras and beloved PowerBook from the MSP airport before heading northward?

I definitely need a babysitter.
I actually just got off the phone with Scott just a few moments ago and I will be flying into MSP early to babysit him for a day or two, and then drive up with you guys. Still sorting the schedule/car thingy
