Installing MOMO RaceAir

Ok, so I'm going to install my new RaceAir, but the question is:
how do you deal with the shift boot and the connection between the boot and the bottom of the knob? How do you keep the boot from falling and giving the installation that unfinished look?
thnx

i have never seen the momo raceair shift knob but on most shift knobs there is a plastic notch at the bottom of them. at the top of the shift boot there is a ring under the leather.
to uninstall it you just have to pull down on the top of the boot until it pops off the knob. then you can unscrew the knob, screw on the new one, and pull up on the shift boot to fit the ring around the notch.
edit: i just saw a pic of the knob you are talking about and its kinda hard to tell if there is a notch on the bottom of it. sorry if what i said above isnt helpful.

A while back someone was making inserts for MOMO shift knobs. I'm sure if you do a search from 6 months to a year back, you should find something. I have one, and love it.

Paulie did sell a piece to go over the shifter but they are currently out of production. You can search for some suggestions might have to go back further than a month though.
Here is what I did. I cut the ring off the bottom of the old shift knob. Placed the new knob on the shifter to measure the needed depth. I then filled the space from the bottom of the shifter up to the knob with some tape. This was to take up the slack between the ring and the shifter. Took the knob off. Forced the ring down over the tape. Placed the knob back on and pulled the boot up. Been like that for about a month and I haven't had problems.

Rubber bands around the shifter.. Then pull the leather sleeve up over it. It works like a champ and you need no mod to the old shift knob or new shift knob whatsoever. I would change the rubber bands once every year or so to prevent dry rot! This is the way I did it.
Good luck!

Hmmm, the old rubber band technique. I think I'll try that one for starters.
Thanks everyone :)

I just got one as well and installed it a few days ago... I did a fair amount of research in the forums and this is what I found out:
Paulie made an adapter that essentially functioned exactally like the stock one but fit the Momo shift knob. (take off your stock knob and you will see what I'm talking about)
Personally I think it was/is a great idea, but I kinda like the more stock look of the shift boot going all the way up to the knob, like the stock piece. With the momo knob and the Paulie adapter it will look this:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=322419&highlight=momo+AND+shift+AND+knob
I prefer the boot to come all the way up to the leather piece, so I just installed it just like the instructions said but I DID NOT put on the bottom metal assembly of the knob. Then with some firm uppward pressure I slipped the boot over end of the knob and it looks kinda like this (in the middle of the thread):
http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=467
For more precautions you can take off the center console and wrap a sliced piece of radiator type hose around the actual metal shifter right underneath the shift knob... then zip-tie it a few times or until it's bomber...
My $.02...

One way to get a nice finished look is to buy (yes, more money) the "screw on MOMO boot" that mates onto a MOMO shift knob.
Check out the photos in the Scoobymods GDA/GDB "MOMO shifter boot" mod. Mine looks exactly like Peaty's pics at the bottom of the thread. Getting them screwed together takes a little bit of puzzle work, but once you know the solution it is easy. PM me if you need more details.

If you get the momo boot, one thing you'll lose is the ability to put on the little bottom cap that has momo on it. To some people, it's a big deal...to others it's not. Now in the pic from the thread that was mentioned. I have an aftermarket boot and I did not use any tricks. The leather boot was so tight fitting that it stayed up by itself. IMO it worked out for the best as I can have the momo knob with the little cap and the boot doesn't fall down :)

If you eschew the little "MOMO" aluminum collar, you find that the knob/ boot setup has a little ridge that will hold up the boot. I prefer this look, because it looks OE. The collar is a bit flash for me.

Before I got mine from Paulie, I took a Pepsi bottle cap and bored a hole through it- then I placed it over the shifter before adding the boot- leave the hole small enough so it fits tightly, and you'll be able to hold the boot up to the knob- and it looks perfect too. Any questions, PM me.

You could always go the OEM way and order the RaceAirleather Aluminum Type S which is offered for the Forester. I actually bought it and it screws on like the original knob (no set screws to mess with or lose). It also has the boot holder machined into the base so no need to use rubber bands/electrical tape/bottle caps. Of course, since it's OEM, you'll have to pay through the nose :)

wrap some tape on the shift stick, and pull hard, and slip the top of the boot over the ring of the shift boot, and it should hold up

I took monkeyboys advice and it worked awesome. It's clean and looks totally factory without the aluminum bottom. It took some pulling, but once you get the leather over the bottom aluminum ring part, it stays and looks great. Thanks!
I'll post pix this weekend.
I placed the knob WAY DOWN, as far as it would go, and I swear my throw seems/is shorter. I have a cartboy SSK I was going to put in, but for now, this seems to have helped in the throw distance!
SHWEEET!

Nice... Glad it worked out good for you...
I did the same with my momo (put it all the way down on the shift lever), and measured height of the top knob. Compared to the stock setup it was 1 inch and change lower... I think I like mine, although it does take a bit to get used to it...
I figure if the boot starts to come loose i'll use the hose trick and hold the boot up from the inside. Oh and my knob HAS NOT come loose yet like i've heard in other threads...

Yup, me neither. I've owned several MOMO knobs and they all install the same way - the three set screws, I have NEVER heard or experienced any problems associated to these screws and them coming loose.
Anyhow, the assembly looks flawless;)
Now I just need to convince my local WRX buddies to not return the MOMO knobs they got and install it your way too!

No pics available because I ended up returning the knob to Z1 Performance. Nothing was wrong with it; the problem was that the MOMO emblem on the knob didn't match the MOMO emblem on my steering wheel. Yeah, yeah. Anal retentive ol' me. Anyways, you can see it on the Subaru Japan webpage; just look under the Forester accessories section. As for price . . . I think it was about $140. Aaack! What the hell was I thinking at the time?!
| Hank3 | 03-29-2003 03:16 AM |
Well I don't think that the knob coming off was that much of an issue in the past...it was more of the screws coming a little loose over time and then it would rattle pretty bad causing a really annoying noise. Mine currently do, but I have been too lazy to re-Loktite them :)
| MonkeyBoy | 03-29-2003 04:25 AM |
You can see a photo of my setup on i-club... Do a search for Momo or MonkeyBoy and you will find it... I would post the link here but the sytem keeps changing i-club to nasioc... ;(

Dude, no need to convince me now! I stumbled into this thread today and ran out to the garage and tried it. First off, aligning the threaded collar cover from the MOMO knob was always a pain. The knob HAD to be on perfect for the threads to catch.
I chucked the little cover ring thingie a majingie and pulled the boot up and over the threaded bottom of the knob. Needless to say, its a TIGHT fit. However, the boot now stays up like its on a overdose of Viagra. Long live MOMO!
Faith renewed with this perfectly matching knob!
For the record, my set screws cam loose twice in the last year I had this knob. I never used loctite. Both times it came loose were on some serious off roading trips "WRC style"!! Rides that were the hardest I ever beat on my car.

Paulie, my family and I would like to thank you for your dedication and service in Iraq.
I was one of those who needed the adapter but couldn't wait and dremeled the stock piece to fit. If I had to do it again, I'd buy the adapter and save myself the hour plus of dremeling.
