is it possible to get the WRX letters on to the IC?

Just like the STi IC, is it possible to do it on the WrX as well? I hate the plain Ic look and want to decorate it. thanks!

VHT piant will work
| Killian Maynard | 01-25-2005 01:57 AM |
It is very easy to do. Just make a stencil of whatever you want and tape and cover what you dont want painted and use VHT spray paint. The key is to get the stencil as flush to the I/C as possible so the paint doesnt get past the edges of the stencil and paint the areas in between the cut outs.

would it be possible to use regular spray paint that is intented for metals? is there any harm in getting paint down inside the intercooler?

Intercoolers are like your radiator. You can paint the whole thing if you want and it will not damage anything. The unit is sealed and nothing you do to the outside of it will not cause damage. What you want to avoid is doing things that will lower it's efficiency to transfer heat to the air. Like painting the whole thing or stuffing plastic bags down the hood scoop...

You can use a can of diarrhea and a paint brush if you want. What are you concirned about? the durability of the paint or harming the intercooler? Just use high temp spray paint and a template.

I wouldn't use it. It might hold up because the intercooler doesn't get red hot but my guess is it will become dull with time or just flake up. If you want to do something like this do it right the first time. High temp paint is just a few buck more per can and you just need less than 1 can. I haven't seen gold if that's the color you want, but I've never looked for gold.

By the way, before you paint, prep the surface well by cleaning it with degreaser or equivalent. Maybe a tooth brush to scrub. Be sure you wait a long time so it's dry or use an air gun, blow drier before you paint.

You must use hi-temp engine paint. Have some Q-tips and nail polish remover handy. All I did was print out the WRXlogo on a piece of paper, I cut out the lettering, taped the paper to the IC and sprayed from a good distnace away. Do not get too close or it will cause a lot of runs. Keep can far enough away that your spraying a mist on the IC and not a stream. After removing the logo, watch for drips and use Q-tips dipped in nail polish remover to remove excess paint/drips/rins but remember two very important things:
1. IC fins are very easily bent so don't scrub or rub too hard with the Q-tips.
2. Nail polish remover is flammable so do not pour it directly on the IC only apply using a Q-tip.
For little spots that you wanted blue that didn't take, spray paint the end of a Q-tip (soak the hell out of it) and use that to touch up areas that need it. Just make sure the Q-tip stays fairly wet on the touch up process or you'll get cotton fuzz all over the IC. Good luck and post pics when you're done!
Get some WRX/STI logos here!

I've heard that over painting your intercooler could decrease the airflow through it. If you got too much paint between the fins, you'd get less air moving through it. That said, I think it mostly applies to people painting their entire fmic completely black for a sleeper look. To keep paint from getting down between the fins, some people set the ic in a pan of water which covers all but the very top the the ic. Then you spray it and the paint sticks to only the part which is above the water.

hi-temp paint is definitely needed. why take your risk to use a regular spray paint when you can do the right job spending a couple dollars or more?
Boostism: i been thinking of the same thing, does the paint decrease the airflow through it ? anyone can verify this?

If you over paint it, sure... paint drips running down between the fins would be bad. But if you're careful and paint it with light coats I'm sure it would end up fine.

it's going to depend on the size of the template used as well as the color. i sprayed from the top. i'm sem-pleased with how it came out, but i have another idea as to what i'm going to do to change things up a little. i like how the "RX" came out, but not the "W." the gold is just very hard to see detail with because it's not a bright color or a color that stands out very well, especially with the location it was painted on. i def didn't use too much paint.

Not happy with it? I think this is why I like the idea of painting a screen instead of the IC itself.
