Is it rice or tacky?

Is it rice or tacky to have just one aftermarket seat in your car along with the other in front being stock? I told my girlfriend im really considering gettin new seats cuz the sti seats are made for fat people and im not fat. lol
So she said she would be pissed if i got an uncomfortable race style seat for her to sit in.
So is it whack to have one, say bride seat and on stock sti seat?

It's a little whack...but people do it quite often. Not only will you make your girlfriend happy, you are gonna save money and have a tighter fit. Do whatever you want. Or...you could get a racing seat for you and then a matching, less racing style seat for the passenger.
| pdxsilverwrx | 12-24-2005 03:19 PM |
It's pretty common to see that. I think it looks a bit weird but OK.
| Lachlan | 12-24-2005 03:26 PM |
It's normal. Less bling, but practical since usually it's only the driver that needs one.
| minx1225 | 12-24-2005 03:26 PM |
I agree it is kinda odd to see one seat in red and rest blue.... But I do see it many times... You can try something like bride seats.. STI seats are pretty hard and they are bucket seats just like many other aftermarket seats..
| kennyvb | 12-24-2005 03:30 PM |
You might consider getting a JDM V7 or newer seat. They fit snuggly and will match.
| TarmacRally | 12-24-2005 03:32 PM |
Yeah, it really depends on what kind of seat you get. If you get a pepboy seat its rice. If you get a nice seat that matches the rest of the interior, its not so bad. Also, its not rice if you actually take your car to a track or autox, and thats why you need the aftermarket seat.
| antny | 12-24-2005 03:53 PM |
I know some people that only have one racing seat. Some people actually think about there passengers since alot of passengers doesnt want to sit in a racing seat for extended trips. I personally have 2 sparco monzas which feel great and have the reclining feature so it makes it alot more comfortable for long trips.

i was gunna do the same thing with my STi interior. just get like a bride race seat for me and leave the other seat alone
| lugee | 12-24-2005 06:54 PM |
i dont think its ricey at all.
I am going to get a sparco sprint just for teh driver since its really myself that needs it the most and i attend track event often.
If its functional, thats all tha matters.

i used to have just one sparco in my old Saturn that was a built STS autocrosser/daily driver.
i kept the passenger seat for 2 reasons orginally and the third one i later learned:
1. Cost. one sparco is a lot less than 2.
2. Humor. there was nothing quite like taking a passenger on a buck run and watching them flop all around like i used to.
3. Taking a nap. even though the Torino that i had was reclineable, it was a serious pain in the butt to recline, plus it was uncomfortable when tilted all the way back. i would just get out and climb into the passenger seat, flop it back and take a short nap on those days when i wrapped up my autocross prep early.

It's not really rice, but it's a little funky looking. Anything that drastically breaks up the symmetry of the cabin will look odd. However, if you need/want a racing seat, I'd say go for it.
Or, "adjust" the bolsters of your stock seat for a tighter fit.

Hey thinking about selling your STi seat? maybew both of them? Im fat and have been looking to get rid of my 98 L's stockers how about it?
| TygerStile | 12-24-2005 08:16 PM |
I have one Sparco driver's seat with the stock passenger seat. Right now the Sparco is out of the car, and I have my stock seat in. I tend to switch back and forth, depending on if I have a track day coming up. I wouldn't say its rice, but I do want to get a matching passenger seat one of these days... which would probably be a something reclineable.

Try talking to someone that does car seats, maybe they can add some bolstering to your stock seat...depends on how hardcore you want your seat to be.
It's not rice, it just looks a little unusual....course laying down the cash for a seat that you don't really need is a bit silly and could be considered rice if you only got the seats for looks and not for actual racing.

I once read somewhere on scoobymods that someone stuffed roll cage cushins along the side bolsters effectively making a narrower seat. It sounded like a tricky mod requiring lots of patience but effective regardless. Basically you unzip your upulstry and slide/squeeze the roll cage cushin foam where you need it the most and then rezip it all back together.

i'm all for the single seat thing. You need to be stuck in your seat when you're driving aggressively. Hopefully, you don't have anyone in the car while you're doing that. And if you do, well, they don't have to concentrate on the road, so they can use their hands and feet to hold themselves in.
If you're going to buy one seat for yourself, get something that isn't side specific...a lot of aftermarket seats have the adjustment controls on either side so you can put the seat on the driver or passenger side. If you buy one like that and later determine you want them to match, you can move the one you already own to the passenger side and put the new one on the driver's side, since the driver's side seat will invariably wear out first.

i personally dont see anything wrong with it. the only person in the car that REALLY matters is the driver. the stock wrx seats are really just fine for a normal rider, so i dont really plan on buying a set of aftermarket seats.
| garie | 12-25-2005 02:11 AM |
not rice at all. If anything its being practical.
It doesn't look that great but honestly the driver does need the better seat vs the passenger.
I might do this one day.....

I bought a Bride Ergo seat intending on doing just the driver side, but I find now that it just doesn't look right at the front with just the big race seat on one side, plus when I'm doing spirited driving it's annoying to have the passenger screaming and holding on for dear life when I'm completely planted in my seat :p
Going to move the recliner over to the passenger side and buy another Bride bucket for the driver after the new year :)

It's not quite "You hold that end" and "sledgehammer", but it's close. You can take the covers off and bend the metal frame the supports the bolster. It doesn't really take very much bending to notice a significant difference, and, unless you go crazy (i.e., try doing it with a sledgehammer) it's a non-permanent mod.
It's hard to enhance the bolsters with stuffing because the cover is on so tight. Although, I've often that a long straight air bladder with a pump would probably work, even if it is an non-ideal solution.
I think someone did a write up on this at one point. I'd recommend trying to find it if you're interested. I've got a friend who adjusted his bolsters, and he got a nice snug fit out of the stocks seats. I've been waiting to do mine since I've got to take the covers off next weekend anyway, and I didn't feel doing it multiple times. I didn't see his seats in the work stage, so I'm not sure if there is any possibility of airbag interference, but I don't think there would be.

I don't think it's ricey, but I think it's not an optimal decision b/c day to day it will call unnecessary attention to the seat and stick out. I say that if you are set on this decision, at least buy a black seat. Personally, I would swap both front seats with another car owner that has seats that would better fit you. Maybe Evo8/9 seats, or are the new wrx buckets for fat ppl too? My opinion has nothing to do with the girl tho-- let her know that the back seats will always be the same
| Zrex11 | 12-25-2005 04:44 PM |
Haha yes! Yeah its not that bad although it will look out of place, my girl hates to ride in my car b/c "it rides too rough and its too loud!!" and i think shes just a bit scared of the speed ha. Just tell her to deal and get 2 seats!

Yea, I have 2 racing seats in my car, and in retrospect, I should've just saved the money and just bought one. Not only was it more expensive, but people who arent the similar weight/height as me complain that they are uncomfortable for them.
| blue blurr | 12-26-2005 01:23 PM |
I dont think its rice at all. I see more people with just one racing seat at the track then I do with both seats swapped out. It just seems better that way, Your only really going to need the racing seat to hold you in better when there probably wont be a passenger in the car. And 90% of the time when there is a passenger you wont be going fast so why make them uncumfortable by having a straight backed racing seat. If your worried about the color red, Why not get a black or dark blue seat so it will match better?
| stArs Inked | 12-26-2005 02:05 PM |
not rice or tacky IMHO, maybe a bit racky though!

Not rice.
Your passenger doesn't need a racing seat. The only reason to get two is because it's human nature to want symmetry. So while two seats look better, one is more practical. If I ever got them, I'd get one first and worry about a second later.
