Is it "uncool" to leave your autox numbers on?

I was taking off my numbers after an event and was just thinking about it...
| GimmeScoobySnacks | 06-11-2004 02:51 AM |
what would be cool about it? Do you have a sticker scheme or something to make it look cool?
| Protege Menace | 06-11-2004 03:42 AM |
one it makes you look like an assclown and 2 cops will get you so fast, driving around with racing numbers on ;)
| bunni | 06-11-2004 04:31 AM |
there's a miata around town with its numbers on... maybe it's the miata, but the guy looks like a tool driving around w/the numbers on.
| jcroy66 | 06-11-2004 06:08 AM |
Well, unless they're permanent numbers, you may end up with scratched paint and/or need to buy new numbers if you leave them on. Most autocross numbers are not designed to withstand highway driving conditions.

The magnets I use, have withstood 80 - 90 mph. You just have to bevel the edge so that no air can get underneath them. But I don't need or want the extra attention while driving on the road.

I left mine on due to rain after one event. Pretty much everything on four wheels wanted to race, and I was followed 6 blocks by a squad car. With this in mind, I'll tell you that I live about 3.5 miles from the venue. I was a black hole for morons.
It looked really stupid when I went down to the garage later to take them off when the car dried off a little.

Greg

You guys should goto Nats or just a divisional at Topeka. Everyone does it. I get all sorts of people asking question when I stop some place.
Heck, KC, Tom, Billy, they all do it.

I did last year... this year there's no numbers on the car. :)
This is what it used to look like:

Now the only decals on the car are the decals above the side skirts.
But come nationals... there will be something different. ;)
I say take them off unless they're permanent. No need for unwanted attention.

We have a nearby drag strip and everyone runs around with shoe polish numbers on their rear windshield:rolleyes:
Most of the attention you'll get by leaving magnetic numbers on probably isn't the kind of attention you want.

I take mine off just for the simple fact that I don't want them flying off.

i live about 4-5 miles from both of our local sites.
i always leave them on to/from. especially if i head home for lunch. permanently working tech makes for a boring day if i stick around the whole time.
oh yeah, no cops have ever hassled me.

You know... I don't see the point in leaving magnets on (specially driving 80 on the highway), but I disagree about the cop statement. Twice I have been in an autox stickered up car when it's been pulled over. Both times, the cop gave the person driving a warning (often saying things like "I know you drive better than most people out here, but...").
That is all.

I say if it's magnetic and not permanent, take it off. If you wanted permanent numbers you'd just vinyl it up like Tom and KC.
Believe me, Tom's car is far from inconspicuous; there's nothing like seeing that thing driving around town (which really doesn't happen anymore.) You can't help but see a blue WRX covered in vinyl.

Id rather take them off there then crawl around the car in the garage later, or worry about them flying off on the highway. If they arent permanent and its not a 2 day event I dont see any reason to leave them on and that has nothing to do with avoiding attention my car is hard to miss but I dont get hassled by anyone.
| fastwrx | 06-11-2004 10:13 PM |
I think it's dorky to leave them on. And, I wouldn't want the attention either.
For those who think magnetic numbers will fly off at highway speed... You must be going pretty fast! I use magnetic numbers for HPDE events at speeds up to 125-130 MPH and they stayed on. So, that's not a problem with magnetic numbers.
It's still dorky, though! What other reason would you leave them on other than to "brag" that you are a "racer" or a wannabe. It's juvenile, IMO.

No cop has ever harassed me about shoe polish (I always take the magnetic ones off). Maybe it's because I don't drive like a monkey. But you do get increased attention from that "element" of driver though.

Actually, I mentioned it because if I remember correctly, I believe some of our local autocrossers' numbers did come off on the highway...
Heck, we have people whose numbers come off on course! Admittedly, that is usually because they have cheap magnets or because their car is mostly Bondo.

My region uses shoe polish for numbers, so I leave it on until I get home and wipe them off with a gas station squeegie.
It's strictly the speed limit in the right lane when I have numbers on, though.

I'm currently in the middle of an experiment...
I put some vinyl numbers on the car a few weeks ago for an event (The Texas Mile), and decided to leave them on for the Cobb meet in UT. 4091 miles in 2 weeks, name on the side with a TX flag, numbers, flames, and teeth on the hood scoop... (not to mention a big a$$ wing on the STi). ...all with no radar detector.

You can't hardly stop somewhere without people asking questions about the car. I have spoken with literally 100s of people about it. I got countless looks from other motorists, guys working construction zones, as well as local and regional law enforcement officials. I saw pleanty of picture-phones pointed at me, but I never got pulled over.
It's been fun, but... The decals do attract a lot of attention, and it's starting to get a little old. They'll be coming off next week when I get back from the Car Corrall at the [emailprotected]
So far, I can only explain my lack of citations as respect for my suspected driving skill or pity from the extra attention I get. Although, I generally try not to drive like an a$$-hat (mind speed zones in town, construction zones, try not to be the fastest guy on the road, etc..), and that may have something to do with it too.
If you want to drive around with crap on your car, I say go for it, but be prepared for the extra attention. If you get a citation, that's your problem, not the numbers.

What I like is someone coming up beside you on the highway, doing about 5-10 over in the high-speed lane. You want to pass someone in front of you in the middle lane and you're waiting for them to complete the pass.. and they hang there... staring and pointing at the car.
You slow down, they slow down... still looking.

Running autocross numbers seems kind of like running a racing number on a mountain bike, when you're not racing. It's cool, like Vanilla Ice.
