Leatherseats.com Install Instructions

UPDATE: Sorry folks... I can't put up as good instructions on the front seat due to umm... I don't really remember what I did. I can post all the pictures I have from doing it but they won't really say much about what I did. I hope they help!

I am going to post just what I wrote tonight and then I will put the rest up later. Hopefully it will be helpfull to those who have yet to install there leather:

1. Remove bottom screws of rear seat bottoms (2 x 12mm) . If you were sitting in the back seat and looked between your calves you will see one of these on each side.

2. Lift seat bottom out of car and set aside in a clean working environment.

3. Remove the screws from the bottom/middle and outside of rear seat back (4 x 12mm):

4. Lift rear seat back up and then towards you to take out.

hey, stage 2 weight reduction! ;)

5. First start with the outter hog rings on the stock seat bottom. Using locking pliers (not the hog-ring pliers), grab a hold of the hog rings and twist 180 degrees. This should bend the ring to where it comes off VERY easily without the need to cut it. My wire cutters were too wussy to cut the hog rings so I had to figure this other way out.

Once you're done there, remove the two hog rings from each side of the inner rear seat bottom panels:

The cover should now slip off fairly easily.

Set the new leather cover on top of the seat foam. Attach the hog rings in the order shown in the picture below:

Then fit the outter edges of the leather around the outside of the foam until it's snug. When you're done, if you want to make it a bit snugger you can alway attach more hog rings between the others... That's it for this peice.

By now, you should feel comfortable working on your leather seats. This peice is by far the easiest of them all. The rear seat backs are also very easily with the exception of the fold-down armest. I had to fight with that thing to get it to fit... not fun. I'll put up step by steps for the back later tonight or tomorrow.

Hope this helps! If you have any feed back it'd be appreciated.

Note: Attaching the hog rings is MUCH easier if you A) have hog ring pliars, B) fit the hog ring (in it's open state) into the pliars and then poke one end of the ring through the material next to the plastic piping on the leather, then push the piping close to the metal rod in the seat cushion until the other side goes around and finally clamp it together. Carefull not to clamp it too far so as not to leave the sharp edges poking out. Look at these pictures showing the right and wrong way.

Here's my final picture:

Bravo!!! Good work!!

I can say that is is much simpler to take off the rear seats on the wagon, but I'll save that for the wagon write up.

Looks sharp bud!

Thanks!

Thanks for the pics/tips/instuctions! Maybe now I'll not be so hesitant to try to do this myself:eek: In case anyone is wondering, I checked w/a recommended upholstory (sp?)installer from a body shop owner I know, and he quoted me $350 to install the leather! Not even including the door inserts! What a pile of crap...

Jorge- I'll be looking for your wagon-specific instructions, so please try to be expeditious (and detailed) for the rest of us rookies....:D
quoted me $350 to install the leather! Not even including the door inserts! What a pile of crap...
What did you want, free? That would be less than 7 hours labor at most rates, an amount of time I bet many of us will double doing the install.

Good luck to all.:D
Mambo Kid 10-24-2001 01:00 PM

Uh, what are hog rings?
Motionblurrr 10-24-2001 01:10 PM

I couldn't tell ya where they got the term "hog rings" but they're these little metal things that hold the leather/cloth/vinyl onto the cushions. It looks like someone took 1" a double sided nail (the sharp side) and bent the crap out of it. The hog ring pliars are designed to make clamping the hog rings easier than a standard set of pliars... they REALLY work well too. =)

Thanx!!!

You rock!!

just got mine today, will be installing soon with the help of your instructions and pics

thanx!

I am part of the second group buy for the leather seats and I would like to know if any of you from the first group have bought black and red leather kits for a red WRX. If so, please post a picture cause this would be my first choice but I am not yet decided on the color. Great work on the install pictures, they will help me in the future!
Yellow T-REX 10-25-2001 12:06 AM

A tip that I do is instead of locking plyers to remove the old hog rings, I use dikes. They are thinner so it is easyer to get in a tight spot and the cutting edge digs in. All you have to do is grab, twist and pull. Works real easy for me. Also if it gives you any greef you can just snip it in two.
grim57 10-25-2001 12:09 AM

I purchased 8" bolt cutters for 9/95 at lowes. they worked like a charm. One more front seat and the side panels to go.
viodea 10-25-2001 02:29 AM

heater/massager?

Did anyone install the heater/massager? I got mine and will install it next week. Any installation hints?

thanks

hey... nice pics :) wish i had a digi cam:(

for those who want some other tips... i wrote a thread about tips i thought might help.. no pics tho

couple of thoughts....

i used "soft wire" cutters from sears... almost no effort needed to clip the wires... :) buy it, use it, return it if you want :D

also, i thought it would be better to start from the center of the seats and work my way out... on the edges, i did the opposite.

that way, i made sure that no material bunched up anywhere and that things look straight..... but the leather fits quite well so i doubt it is a big issue :)

Mudboogers - $350 w/o door inserts?!!
i'll do it for anybody's car for $200 ;) (c'mon, help a poor college student out :D )

here my links... not meant to "steal" your thread Indexed Color, but it might help fellow i-clubbers :)

You won't steal my thread until you start putting up pictures! =) I just want everyone to have as much info as possible so no sweat!

Hey Yellow T-Rex, did you get the silver leather for the door panels? I didn't received (but I wasn't charged for it either) the silver leather...
Motionblurrr 10-26-2001 08:22 AM

OK, well I had a helluva time with the front passenger seat (haven't even done the driver seat yet) so I don't even know what to tell you that I did, nor do I know that it was the best way to do it... cuz it was a PITA!!! I wanted to take the back off of the bottom soooo bad but I just couldn't figure out a simple way but I swore it was possible so I wasted tons of time... what a dumba$$ :)

Hopefully the first set of instructions will give anyone using them the idea behind doing the whole thing because I don't think I can really do the same type of instructions for the front seats. I am tired, my fingers are cut up and sore, and I pulled a muscle in my neck... even so, I'm glad I didn't take the leather to a shop to have it installed. That's just not worth it. I guess my biggest problem was not feeling like I was doing everything correctly.. had I someone to say "yes that's right" I think I could've finished a lot earlier and has much less stress.

Oh well, time for bed :)
LttLDGN 10-26-2001 12:33 PM

ummm... for Both front seats, you will have to remove the seat backs from the bottoms~!!!!

it is easy if you do..

here's how... on the drivers side seat...

pull the height adjustment lever so the handle comes off... (just pull REAL hard)
unscrew the back angle adjustment level lever.... remove...

1 screw left on the plastic panel.... remove... take off plastic panel too

you will find 2 bolts holding the seat back to the bottom where they angle adjustment was..... remove these 2 bolts.... remove screw on OTHER side..... wiggle assembly a bit.. and it pops out...

also be sure to unclip the airbag wires..... it helps :D

Passenger side seat

this is easier ....but strange... only 4 bolts ... 2 on each side to remove.....(after removing plastic piece) the seat bottom will then slide out.... but the frame remains....

hope that helps... :)

Yes I did, it looks like a 1/4 hide. not that I know cow skin real well but it has 2 strait edges like it was sliced down the back and then cut in two. Poor silver cow! Did they send you anything for the panels?

I have the back seats and passanger seat done. Lots of wires with the heaters and message. Haven't attempted the door panals yet. I probably spent 2 hours on the back and 2 hours on the passanger seat, not including wiring to power. I will save that for when both seats are done.

I too spent about 15 minutes looking for a way to remove the back from the bottom frame before I said screw it, and just worked with it as one piece.

Looks great with the silver in the car.
Motionblurrr 10-29-2001 12:03 AM

Yeah, I couldn't get the back off of the passenger seat either.. the driver's side was easy though.

So how much did you get charged for the 1/4 hide? I didn't get squat. :( Just the dark graphite vinyl for the doors..
Yellow T-REX 10-29-2001 12:09 AM

Invoice says, Silver Door (1/4 Hide) $67.00
Motionblurrr 10-29-2001 12:09 AM

Damn, I should call him up and say ***. :)
Yellow T-REX 10-29-2001 12:09 AM

Did you call Eric?
Yellow T-REX 10-29-2001 12:12 AM

There were 4 of us, right? I wonder if the other 2 got theirs and someone else got yours?
Snowphun 10-29-2001 09:13 AM
Yeah, I couldn't get the back off of the passenger seat either.. the driver's side was easy though.
I didn't take the back off the seat, I took the bottom off the front seats. It's only held on by four 12mm bolts. Made it alot easier.

Motionblurrr 10-29-2001 10:22 AM

What's the difference between taking the back off and taking the bottom off?? So then the glass isn't half empty, but half full.. ? ;)  :D
Snowphun 10-29-2001 10:33 AM

Yeah, I know what you're saying except I was taking the bottom cushion off the seat. The frame and everything else stays with the back cushion, right? :D
Motionblurrr 10-29-2001 11:13 AM

Yeah... I noticed that the cushion seemed to want to jump out when I was working on the passenger seat. I didn't bother though. :p The driver's seat was easy enough to pull off the top from the bottom though. :)
Snowphun 10-29-2001 12:01 PM

How did you resolve the leather on the back seat around passthrough? Mine didn't have the plastic lines to hog ring it to the seat, so they're all flapping around...

do you mean the armrest? or the hole around the armrest/passthrough...

if your kit did not come with the plastic lines there.... try using a stock wire.... [IMG]http://www.i-club.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif[/IMG]
Motionblurrr 10-29-2001 01:58 PM

I came up with a really crazy contraption of making a little chain of hog rings.. I'll post pictures when I can.
Snowphun 10-29-2001 02:45 PM
do you mean the armrest? or the hole around the armrest/passthrough...
I'm talking about the leather on the seat, that surronds the armrest, so three sides (left, right, top). Sounds like Index didn't have any either. I'm thinking of running coat hanger wire through the edge of the leather.

That's the only big flaw I saw with the kit.
LttLDGN 10-29-2001 03:01 PM

sorry.. but i did this a week ago.. hehe kinda fuzzy now.. but if i remember right... every place that DID not have the plastic strips... i used the stock wires from the cloth... those wires are made to fit the seats anyways.... =) so maybe try that... there were some places where i did have to use the stock wires from the seats...
Motionblurrr 10-29-2001 09:32 PM

Snowphun, take a picture of what you're talking about. :)
Snowphun 10-30-2001 10:10 AM

Hey, I can do that!

Hopefully you can see that the sides and top are not hog ringed. But I think I can probably run some coat hanger through there...
Snowphun 10-30-2001 10:12 AM

Inside angle:
LttLDGN 10-30-2001 01:15 PM

hehe ok... i know what you mean now..... do you still have the original cloth seat covers? what happened to the metal rods in them??? i don;t remember exactly if my kit had the plastic lining, but if it didn't i would of used the wires from the stock cloth seats.... i had to use them in certain areas of the leather....

if you use a coat hanger... be sure to get ALL the kinks out of it hehe... and round off the ends... sharp ends = bad for leather :D

bdowell 10-30-2001 04:35 PM

Yeah, I got my 1/4 hide of Silver. It was more than enough for the doors, even had enough left over to do my shift boot and then some. The whole kit installed looks amazing!
Jess 10-30-2001 04:40 PM

Shifter boot

If you could snap a picture of your new silver leather shift boot, that would be great.

I may want to change mine for red leather when the second group buy is done!:)
cvsinner 11-02-2001 06:41 PM

any more pics of the front seat installs?

thanx!

Anyone installed leather on a 04 yet? I'm wondering if it will be harder with the heated seats that come with the premium package. Thanks.
