Thanks for all the support everyone. We feel really good about this result. Our goal was to prove we could take a privateer team and a subaru to the top of a major pro series. To us, 8th in qualifying, Top Five and fastest lap in Grand-am Cup accomplishes that goal. Now it's time to set the bar higher I guess :).
Of course, I am highly embarassed at my wonderful four off experience in Turn 4 on the first lap :). Driving too fast to know or care that I am staying on the track. I am sure you will all see it on TV.

They had alot of Championship story lines to cover. It is too bad because the first 40 minutes of the ST class had some of the best racing I have ever been involved in. Miller gets a big thumbs up from me as place to have some great battles.

Dooode! I'm not sure of the differences in class' between U.S. Touring Car. Dave Brown in the works evo posted a best lap of 3:22 and change. 3:16.86thats flyin!!
It's a hard track to get down too, super long. I have visited once or twice a month since miller opened, and still can't remember all the turns. nice job!

The GOTO Legacy actually directly competed against the USTCC EVO at the laguna seca A1GP. Thats when they were allowed to run AERO, an aftermarket exhaust and a BBK. It was also thier virgin run with the car.
The GOTO team pulled out of USTCC and put thier efforts into the GrandAM cup. They are running with less power, less aero, and less brake in the GAC than they were in the USTCC. 3:16.86 is truely flying.

Sorry Roby, I meant no disrespect toward you or the works evo. Being that Miller is my home track, I just have to appreciate how stinking fast a 3:16 is.

It was tough to get up to speed there with all those turns. As always we were great in the fast stuff, but had to really make alot of changes to cope with the slower corners. Tuning for slow corners usually goes against my philosophy, but it really worked at miller. The front section of switchbacks had tons of hidden time once we figured out how to get out of those corners without pushing. The RWD cars owned us there until we worked through a series of shock adjustments to get the rear to step out.
The interest downside to "rallying" those corners was how hot the rear diff got. By the end of the race we had toasted it, and the diff oil actually melted our drain pan. Wish I had a pic for everyone.

I think my favorite section is T1 to turn T5. So fast....So Scary. I sometimes say a little prayer that my car sticks. ha ha

I loved that section!!!
We made up some serious time there as well. Chris mentioned that we had the car working well in the slow stuff, but that did not change the fact that the Legacy has always rocketed throught the fast stuff. I was pacing most of the GS cars in that section... good times :).

I know, I am agreeing with you. Im implying that the legacy is still faster even with less stuff. In the A1GP It was the legacy's virgin run and they still mopped up.
GAC regs are stricter than USTCC regs. The USTCC EVO with more stuff is slower than the GAC Legacy with less stuff.
In USTCC you are allowed to run Aero, BBK's, and an Exhaust.
In the GAC you CANNOT run ANY of that stuff. The motor is stock from intake to exhaust. The brake calipers are stock as well.

Dave's EVO has gotten pretty heavy though, I think it is up to 3700lbs. With a full tank we weight about 3300lbs.

I to run at the Miller Track multiple times a month congratulations on such a sweet time and over all placement. I was there for the qualifying and practice sessions it was nice to see awd representing. Sorry about your diff. Are all the cars as restricted as the legacy? I remember hearing the exhaust of the other competitors drive by and all I could hear when the subaru drove by was its tires humming.

No, the legacy is probably the most restricted car, if by restricted we mean by parts/modifications we cannot use. But I would not say that the car was being made uncompetitive. We haven't been to a race yet where we didn't stack up well to the pace of the field. The technical team is very experienced and knows what they are doing when it comes to car homologation.
As a general rule GA lets NA cars have open tuning, intake(and sometimes cams), and exhaust. FI cars are further restricted to stock intake and intake manifolds, and have to run stock diameter exhausts. The legacy had a further restriction compared to it's FI bretheren(SRT,Cobalt) in that we actually had to run the STOCK exhaust AND stock mufflers(hence the whisper quiet race car). We are still allowed ECU like everyone else, and are independantly monitored by GA to never exceed stock boost numbers. For details GA has the rules up on their website and the list of mods for each make(www.grandamerican.com)
I am hoping that we get to take off our mufflers next year. Maybe this will help our weak top end, or at the very least makes us sound like a proper race car :).

I saw both of you guys (Lock brothers), competed in U.S Touring car but only in one race at Laguna. Does GAC and USTCC race together the same weekend or something? Or was is just practice?
| RobY | 09-30-2006 10:05 PM |
They originally planned on using the car as a dual purpose vehicle for the GAC and the USTCC. Racing costs money and time. They chose to concentrate on the GAC instead of the USTCC because the GAC is a better known more popular series.
