McCulloch HID

anyone know if this brand of HID's are good? Also i ant decide what color HID's to get should i get the 6000k which is purple? or the 8000k which is blue?
| djerickd | 03-17-2004 01:31 PM |
I would go any higher than 6000K unless you really want to show off the colors. I've got a McCulloch kit, it's great when it's working properly. I've already blown 2 balasts. One thing I did differently this time is to run the grounds direct to the chassis, hopefully this will provider better power to the balasts. Also make sure you pull the DRL module under the dash.

Im pretty sure 6k is white with a lil blue and 8k is more blue and so on etc. However, most people say anything from 4300 to 5200 or whatever is the best and most OEM look to the luxery cars. As for the brand i just picked up a set of them in 6k. I havent heard anything too negative about them.

Agreed... maybe that $350ish is better spent elsewhere.

so do you think the 2 blown ballasts was your bad, or was it thw kit?
| HongKongBeef | 03-17-2004 03:26 PM |
Although people on this board seem to love McCulloch, on the HID forums McCulloch is known as crap.

it's not oem so it's not DOT approved and you'll blind everyone and nobody will like you.. also even if it is dot approved, your lenses won't be approved for the hid lamps so in essence stick w/ halogen or nobody will want to be your friend

DOT approved or not usually as long as they are aimed properly they will have the same effect on other drivers. Its not like OEM HIDs don't glare and only aftermarket ones do. Still I want HID's for my projectors, the light they provide makes driving much safer for me, and I don't really mind other cars on the road with HID's.

It was the kit, I hooked it up accoring to directions and they worked fine for a few months. Good thing they had a warranty!

I had the McCulloch kit and it was crap (my opinion). Too blue for my taste, not to mention that the darker the color (more blue) the less light you can actually see. I just installed the Hella kit from Mr. Jung and cannot believe how much better the quality is. I will post pictures when I get back from my trip. The Hella kit is 4200K (I believe) which has the most light output (3200 lumens). The light color is more like a halogen bulb ( a little whiter).
The McCulloch kit took several minutes to warm up and provide maximum lighting , but the Hella kit is instantaneous.

Me too.
I don't think they're crap. I've never blown a ballast.
I DID however have an issue with them flicking off and on again after I switched from high to low beams. This cropped up recently, I've had the kit for a while.
I ended up grounding them to the chassis, to provide better power, but now since they don't turn off when the highs are activated I don't need to worry about it anyway.
Still happy with them overall.

I have the McCulloch 8000k kit and have been very happy with it. No blown ballasts/ignitors, no questionable antics, just lots of light, and a dead-simple install.

This kit looks identical (ballast size/shape, ignitor size/shape, connector design) to the McCulloch kit. And this kit looks to require more wiring and does not appear to come with a plug and play adapter to use with the factory halogen bulb connector.

does anyone have info on the sheilds available for hid kits? they are metal and shaped like a cylinder. it's almost a jacket that covers the lower side of the bulb to reduce glare.
i want a set to fit h-1 bulbs.

I can't find any news of what happened but I know Gourmet Garage (who used to distribute the McCulloch kits) started selling their own name branded HID kits... then they dropped off the map as well. Can't find any info on what's going on with either company but I think I remember McCulloch was bought or merging or something with a German maker.
As always I'm probably wrong.

And since this thread will probably become ripe for HID searches.. here's what McCulloch 5k's look like in EDM's.
