Mesh Grill Insert? part 1

Subdued 07-24-2002 11:47 PM

Mesh Grill Insert?

Has anyone done any Grill mods to protect their radiator and or intercooler? I was thinking of a mesh grill insert. I have seen the post on ScoobyMods.com, but am looking for other less intrusive ideas (ie. no visible zip ties).
cnk 07-25-2002 12:10 AM

I did the screens for the grill and radiator. I used black zip ties and you can't even see them. The pics posted on Scoobymods are using white zip ties which make it stand out. Cheap mod to do and worth it IMHO. It has stopped tons of bugs already. :D

Yes, check this grill out. I bought it on Ebay. It's sweet!!! You can't see anything. Very easy to install:D I'm not sure if it's going to post right. I had to downsize it!
saggioWRX 07-25-2002 05:49 AM

Nope too small. Anyway check on Ebay, it's a Billet grill Horizontal pattern. Not the cheap stuff from Home Depot!!!

Billet grill

That is a nice looking grill. About how much should I expect to pay? Do you have the name of the manufacturer?
cnk 07-25-2002 10:39 AM

I did the Home Depot mod, don't think there's anything wrong with it. Afterall, it performs a function. I paid $5-6 for the materials. Most screens go for around $100. . .I would rather spend that money on other mods. :)

DIY grill

A grill & some zip-ties. To do it right, drill small holes around the edges of where it'll attach (for the scoop, take it off the car, and drill 'em through the back of the 'pillars').

The zip-ties are virtually invisible.

I used a roll of gutter guard, which I painted with a mix of orange and red spray paints.

epoxy

I did both the top and bottom openings, using a mesh that I got from my body guy. For the grill I just took it off flipped it around, cut the mesh about an inch larger all the way around, folded it over and epoxied it. don't use too much epoxy though, a little bit can hold it very tightly. I did the same thing for the bumper, it really wasn't that bad to get it off.
this method leaves no visible fasteners or anything

Billet Grill pic

I don't know if anyone else picked up on it, but hat picture of the Billet Grill on the Red WRX... Is a photoshoped picture. If you look at the reflection on the top of the front bumper, you can see the reflection of the stock Subaru Starts emblem - which is nowhere to be seen on the face of the Billet Grill.

Don't get me wrong, it does look really good, but I would like to see a REAL picture of a WRX with this on it. Not a created picture...

i have to agree with guitarec, i checked the link and sure enough, you see the reflection from the subaru logo. but its not on the grille. hmmm? any idea on this?

I asked the guy to send a pic of the grill only. Said he had no pictures....that was the only one..hhmmmm!
saggioWRX 07-26-2002 10:31 PM

I'm trying to post a picture of the grill on my car but my picture is 5000kb. When I size it down it gets really blurry! How do I do it so it's clear???
TheWorks 07-27-2002 02:41 AM

Home Depot works for me.

I gave the HD method a try and for around 7 bucks or so it turned out good.

Please post Saggiowrx's picture larger on this thread. Gotta see that up close. Nice.
saggioWRX 07-28-2002 10:17 AM

I sent John (Detroit Wagon) the picture, but he hasn't posted it yet!:( I still can't resize it for some reason, sorry.

CirrusWRX 07-29-2002 11:00 AM

So the grill that Detroit wagon and others have actually mounts INFRONT of the current stock honeycomb/emblem?

interesting...
Detroit wagon 07-29-2002 12:31 PM

No, sorry, I don't have the grill, just SaggioWRX. I just resized the pic for him.:)

IMHO I'm not sure I like all of the horizontal lines on a car that is all curvy for the most part. It might look better on a GC8 with their lower profile headlights.

Okay I know everyone tries the DIY with the "Gutter Guard" so I decided I would check it out. I was surprised how flimsy it was. I also don't much care for attaching the grill with zip ties. Has anyone out there found some decently strong grill and a better way to attach it I would love to do this.
Detroit wagon 07-29-2002 04:34 PM

I just figured out what was really bothering me about your grill Saggio... I think it would look really good if you painted the stock grill to match the body. That way it wouldnt look like the grill is framed by the black plastic. just my opinion.

There are all kinds of aftermarket mesh grill inserts available for the Honda crowd. Has anyone checked into whether or not the same manufacturers have plans for the Subaru's?

I really want that grill!! Is there anywhere that i can still get it that isn't related to buckbomb? Thanks

Alex
CirrusWRX 07-30-2002 09:57 AM

I think home depot sells it, right?? In the automotive section??

j/k - but seriously - I may be missing something, but isn't that just a nicely done screen mod? (not to detract from it or anything, I think it looks very good!!)
128d 07-30-2002 10:09 AM

I have seen these kits Buckbomb has and I really like the look. My question is how are each piece attached. Also more importantly how much, and where can i get it. :D
IwantONE 07-30-2002 10:10 AM

I'm probably the laziest person you will never meet. I'd rather pay for a well made piece than waste my time making a ****ty piece.
Detroit wagon 07-30-2002 11:05 AM

Saggio, while you're at it you should have your side mirror arms (the triangular pice that mounts to the door) painted the same as your body. I think that would look good as well.

Have you seen anybody that has painted those? That again, is a great idea John!
optimalrage 07-31-2002 08:29 AM

APC sells mesh for grills for around $40a piece. They are ethier 6 or 8"x30 or 36" I forget how big they are. They come in red, silver, blue, black, and yellow. The colors are anodized with the exceptions of the silver and black. You should be able to get them at pep boys, checkers, autozone or any place that usally carries rice. (not including local supermarket):D

I thought that I would post this info scince nobody mentioned it.
Maybe just the custom look your looking for.

SaggioWRX - WRXThis has his side mirror arms painted. He also did an interesting treatment on his grill to help integrate his painted Morettes in. The dash is something I've considered myself...but I have a blue car. Here some pictures.
