Momo shift knob insert from stock WRX knob..

I recall seeing a post at one point about using the stock shifter knob to make some kind of insert for the Momo knob so the boot would stay up. I've been searching for an hour and just can't find it. If you have any info/instructions on this, please PM me.
thanks.
thanks.

ben there, done that..still couldn't find it.
I would love to get one of his inserts but seems like he won't be making some for a while and I have an OE knob lying around, thought I would make some mod to fit my momo.

Hmmm - well, when I put my Momo knob on, the OEM boot stayed up by itself. I think that varied from car to car depending on how much Viagra is put into your boot  J/K But my boot did stay up by itself - I think it depended on the creases that were in the boot maybe . I just know that mine stayed up and the boots from other people on here did not. I currenty have an aftermarket boot that is made of real leather and it has no problems either. Now also...I remember reading on the forums people making up their own get-up on how to keep it up (ie. electrical or duct tape maybe?) Sorry I can't offer you more help...
| newsman | 02-28-2003 11:07 AM |
How low do you guys put your aftermarket knobs? Is there much space between the base of the threaded part of the shifter to the knob? (you can feel it with your hand).
| Hank3 | 02-28-2003 11:35 AM |
With my Momo Airleather, I let it seat onto the shifter until it wouldn't go down any further and then just used the three screws with some Loktite. No problems yet. And it's pretty low :)

I have had a MOMO Raptor shift knob for over a year, mine had no adaptor or anything either to keep the shift boot up, but my girlfriend had the idea of using rubber bands to make a insert for the shift boot. After adding about 20 rubber bands the shift boot clipped nicely over the make shift insert, I drive my car hard and not once in a year has the shift boot fell down. Quick and cheap.

ooooops!!!! Everytime in that post I typed shift wrong, I thought I caught them all oh well.
But the rubber bands will work very well. Just keep adding one by one until you get the desired diameter that will hold the boot up. I actually have trouble trying to pull my boot down over the rubber bands.
On another note I used all yellow rubber bands to match the yellow shift knob just in case it was going to show through.

I got a Momo knob for Xmas and got too impatient to wait for Paulie to run another batch of his adapters (that's not a flame - just a testament to my need to fiddle).
I got this idea from reading another post on this...All I did was take two 1" pieces of rubber tubing (fuel lines from a Mack truck, actually....don't ask...), split them down the middle, and wrapped them around the shift rod.
I put the first rubber piece over the shift rod and overlapped the first piece with the second and zip-tied them tight, then pushed it up against the under side of the shift boot so that it butted up against the bottom of the knob. Now the boot doesn't move at all and it looks perfect.

doesn't that require you to remove your console in order to insert under the boot?

Not the whole thing...just pop off the e-brake handle part (there are 2 notches to put a small screwdriver in the back) and then the other piece just lifts up...it's pretty simple.

Use the adaptor made by Paulie. Make sure you search for "any date" to find it.
I have one of these adaptors for my MOMO knob and I love it. Perfect fit.

Paulie has hit a delay in having these made, so you'll either have to try something inventive on your own or wait.

Hey guys,
First off, I would like to apologize for not getting back with you sooner. I was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom since February and just returned this weekend.
Good news thoughI just got off the phone with my supplier and the new batch of shift knob adapters will be here by the end of the month. If you are still interested, please reply to:

I did this. I took the stock knob and using a dremel, I cut the leather off. under the leather is a rubber layer then a hard plastic adapter that is shaped like the shift knob. I then took a sander piece and dremeled it down to size for the Momo shift knob. It is not as pretty as Paulie' but it does the job.
The adapter now fits in the Momo knob nice and tight and screws onto the shifter and the boot fits just like the stock one.

I ended up not using the set screws at all on my air race.. I just used a Insert that needed a little gusta to get it on, and screwed the trim piece that covers the set screws on all the way on, and twisted the knob unit it went all the way down... the boot stays up fine. I think the boot wont stay up unless you have the knob down as far as possible, and Its nice to have a lower knob IMHO. and the way the cover screws on makes you leave 1/4" or so for tightening of the screws..
just my experience.

JDMSubaru - Yeah...I have the KB shifter. The momo knob is set all the way down. Shortest shift possible :D. I no longer have that boot. I've got a momo boot now that doesn't sag as bad as the one in the picture or the OEM one. I can take pics if anyone desires to see one :)
| nt5k | 09-28-2003 07:55 PM |
Where did you get the white-face gauges? Are they reverse indiglo? (Turning black like the stock setup?)
| newsman | 09-28-2003 09:42 PM |
Yea! I would love to see it. Oh, one question - how did you attach Momo boot to the console?
| JDMSubaru | 09-28-2003 10:20 PM |
...and where do you get the boot from? :)
| Hank3 | 09-28-2003 10:45 PM |
nt5k - the reverse indiglo gauges do have the black background at night and then lights up blue also. It not as blue/purple as the VWs, but it's a nice change from the stock green for me :) I got them a while ago from the person who was making them, but that was about a year and a half ago. I saw one in the "Private For Sale Classifieds" just very recently - maybe a week or so ago., so you may want to surf or search to see if a new one pops up again or see if that guy ever sold his set. If not, I've also seen them on eBay. But make sure you get the one that used the stock speedometer as a template. I'll take some pics in a few and will try to post them up tomorrow morning.
newsman - the momo boot was attached to the console with the screws you see on the STi Trim. There are nuts on the underside that pinches the boot between the trim and the nut.
JDMSubaru - www.subydude.com is where I got the momo boot.
Just went out to the garage and took some pics. Will post them when I get to work tomorrow sometime. If I can get someone to host them :)

Hmm, so you didn't use plastic ring from OEM boot. However doesn't boot sag in between screws though?
| Hank3 | 09-28-2003 11:07 PM |
With the trim and the aftermarket boot, you don't need the trim ring nor the little delicate rings. No sags whatsoever between the screws. They're in very tight.

Here's the link to a set of the Reverse Indiglo gauges sold just recently:

Didn't take the time to read every post carefully but you can use a zip tie and pull the boot over the thick part of the zip tie. This holds very nicely.

Is that with the new shift boot on? Are you using the paulie adaptor?
| Hank3 | 09-30-2003 10:09 PM |
The pics are with the new momo boot. I prefer it over the stock and previous aftermarket boot I had (in the pics earlier inthe post). It sags a little less and I like the crumpled-leather look --- but that's just personal preference :) Also - I no longer have the paulie adapter. I wrapped three rubber bands around the shifter and the boot just sits right over them and stays up really well...
| WRX-games | 10-01-2003 01:58 PM |
Here is what I did for my Momo. I used the three screws and some lock tite to tighten it onto the shifter. I used the colar for the knob at first, but the boot would sag so what I did is remove the colar. I then took a little waterless soap and put that around the base of the knob and slid the OEM boot up to where the colar would go. It looks really nice and I didn't have to spend a dime :)

whyd you get rid of the paulie adaptor?
i want a shift boot that will hardly sag at all, is the momo still the best one for this?

Mine got damaged from trying to cut it down. I really prefer the knob to sit as low as possible and the adapter was prohibiting that (this was before Paulie showed me how to properly do it :) ) my desired knob position. I didn't want to spend another $20 and plus the momo boot doesn't work with his adapter. The momo boot will allow you to screw straight onto the momo knob if you don't use the colalr, but I prefer the collared-look so I had to make-do with some rubber bands.
I can't verify that the momo boot is the least saggy of boots out there....sorry.

I have a MOMO air leather knob, and although I have a 98 L, I have a WRX boot in it. I just didn't put the bottom part of the knob on (the aluminum part that screws on) and used the little rubber thingy that would normally attach to the stock knob. I pushed that up over the threads on the knob, and it hasn't even bugged yet! Looks better in my opinion, cause it looks more OEM I guess.

Hank, I want to know, how did you do the install for the shifter trim? Did you have to drill out those plastic studs underneath the panel that hold the leather bag on?
| Hank3 | 10-03-2003 07:00 PM |
Basically...the studs/screws were taken out in addition to the plastic-squared bracket. You have to dremel/cut little holes for the screws on the console.
| JDMSubaru | 10-04-2003 01:52 AM |
so do the original plastic studs (beneath the panel) get drilled off when you put the screws in that secure the trim on?
| Brad Nely | 10-04-2003 02:12 AM |
I just put thin strips of duct tape on the knob to make it just a little bit bigger in diameter, and the boot stays on.
