Monza predictions........
Montoya will win!!!
| gtguy | 09-12-2002 10:06 AM |
Boy, that's a tough one...McLaren was kicking out the jams in recent test sessions, as was Williams. But I still think that the home field advantage for Ferrari is going to be too much for the others, hence:
1. MS
2. RB
3. Ralf
4. Kimi
5. JPM
6. DC
I also think that Jaguar will do better than anyone thinks, though they won't be getting into the points this weekend, barring any sort of major attrition at the front.

Montoya Will Podium!

Michael - A faster driver in a faster car on better rubber...
Rubens - A fast driver in a faster car
Juan Pablo - He's fast, but his car is not red...
Ralf - He's fast but he's honeymooning when his helmet is not strapped on
Kimi - The Iceman cometh into points
David - He battleth the Iceman
Ferrari on Bridgestones... whatta combo... they haven't got it wrong very many times this season, and they both circled their calendars for this weekend, because last year Montoya on Michelins bested them, and they do not want it to happen this year.

Monza question
First, well done Montoya.
Second, I'm distressed to see that Minardi was forced to bring back Alex Yoong. The only way he's going to stay out of F1 is if he leaves the track in a box or an urn. Sorry Alex - maybe the wall at Indy has your name on it.

If nothing goes wrong with the new Ferrari engines then they will see another 1,2 either way around, then Montoya.

Yeah, baby! Yeah! Another pole for pole boy Montoya!

Now he just needs to win.

It's not cool hoping somebody is going to crash and die.

With special qualifying engines revving to 19,000 rpms, I would expect a Williams to be on pole. The race, however, will be another matter. The only question in where Michael will pass JPM, and will Rubens pass him as well.

I think it comes down to the tires... if Michelin comes thru, or if Bridgestone misses, then we could have a good dog-fight of a race...
Monza is still a cool track... you can lay the wings down, and pass people... cars do tend to break here, though, so our pick6 scores will be lower than average, I would guess.

That's 15 DNFs in 32 starts for Montoya.
Spare me the excuses.

I hate it when the major networks buy the rights to a race then proceed to ruin it!

Surely SPEED Channel will re-broadcast, right? They usually do, but it may be a week-and-a-half later. It's actually been a good race, with pretty good coverage.

Thank you! I hadn't looked past Friday the 20th. Sucks that I have to wait that long.
On the other hand, Grand Am is racing at Le Circuit de Mont Tremblant on SPEED, which is the first track I've ever been on in the first racecar I've ever driven. Nice memories!

Okay, that was pretty goldurned weird. Ralf blows up on lap 2, Montoya drives in a manner that breaks the car, Kimi blows up, DC hoses it off...
And at the front, it's another Ferrari team picture. I think everybody got the predictions big-time wrong this week. The only safe ones were Michael and Rubens 1-2, though everybody got the order wrong. Too funny.
The BernieVision feed was excellent as always, but Danny Sullivan is NOT the person you want to have wrapping up coverage, IMHO. I'd say that I'm looking forward to the broadcast of the next race, but I'll be there. Anyone who's there, look for a big-legged bicycle racer type wearing a Makinen replica driver's jacket. I'll be hanging by the hillocks on the infield, as usual.

Needless to say... I fell asleep on that one! Don't even remember what lap it was because stupid Bernie-vision likes to defy logic and count down laps with a fraction?! Huh? 52/53 means... they are on lap 52 OUT OF 53, right? Wrong, that means they are on lap 1!...Weird.

We Suck!

With motors and cars breaking, their were no winners in this weeks i-club F1 Pick6... only losers!
Peter Sauber is a much better judge of driver talent than those of us who thought it is a mistake to move Massa out of the Sauber seat.

Ford made the correct choice when they moved Rahal out of Jaguar F1, and let Lauda run the whole team.

Toyota's motor was very, very stout, and could have had both cars in the points if not for McNish's front suspension failing, and Salo's unusual driver error of crossing the pit out white line.

Speaking of Toyota, it now looks more likely that Panis' team-mate at Toyota for next season will be not be Massa, but instead Cristiano da Matta from the Newman-Hass team in CART.
Massa's agent said that Massa had earlier this week been moved to the top of the list at Toyota F1 for next season because Newman-Hass was asking mucho money to allow da Matta to be released out of his existing contract. However, on Saturday, Massa's agent learned that Toyota and Newman-Hass are discussing an IRL engine deal for N-H's 2003 IRL team as compensation. Therefore da Matta is back in the picture at Toyota F1, and Massa chances of signing there have dropped.
It is my hope that Massa gets an F1 testing contract w/a concurrent full season of F3000 for 2003, and then is back on the F1 grid in 2004.

Once again, Bridgestone brought a very good tire... After last week's testing at Monza, they were not satisfied w/their chosen compound for Monza, so they had the factory work last weekend to build a new compound, and Bridgestone's Technical Mgr for Motorsport, Hisao Suganuma, said that this new compound was the difference that brought home 1st, 2nd, and 6th place points.

Ralf slowed down, not because his engine blew, but because at the beginning of the race, he straightlined the chicane, and FIA told Williams to have Ralf and Juan Pablo switch places. After Ralf slowed to let Montoya pass, his BMW motor lost its pneumatic pressure, and ate its little valves.
Juan's motor bogged at the start, and then later his front suspension failed.

Renault is very happy for both cars scoring points after identifying some engine reliability problems in testing this week, and then suffering thru a dissappointing qualifying session which put both cars on the slower half of the grid. Jarno started in last place after not being able to grab 1st gear for the warm-up lap. Jenson let Jarno thru later in the race, because Jarno was lapping faster and had a chance to hunt down Eddie for a podium position.
Renault credit a change in pit-stop strategy to enable them to have both cars in the points... They moved their pit-stops forward to move Jarno around Salo (Mika was blistering his rears early in the race), and Jenson apparently moved around a slower car thru his earlier pit-stop, as well.

Panis drove an excellent race from start to checkers to earn a point running a 2 stop strategy as did Rubens.
It seems to me he (and Jacques) would have benefitted by laying down their wings a bit more, as it may have allowed for more passing opportunities for both drivers.

Massa will lose 10 positions on the grid of the U.S. Grand Prix because the race stewards did not like him driving over de la Rosa.

Danny Sullivan is not very exciting w/a microphone in his hand! Somebody serve him a big iced coffee, or better yet a couple of cans of Red Bull before putting another microphone in his hands!! On the other-hand, Ben Edwards, and race analyst, John Watson, provided excellent race commentary for the ABC viewers.
EDIT: Spelling; added 2003 & 2004 comments about Massa; correctly identified Ben Edwards; chastised Danny Sullivan more severly...

I like that recap! Especially the part about da Matta. He was quoted before that he was disgusted cuz he was only offered a test position, not a race seat.

Montoya's suspension broke due to curb abuse. I don't know that he was using them any more than anybody else, but his right front wheel came up off the ground, and never came back down. I'm not sure if he broke left-rear, or right-front.

First, his car was uncompetitive versus the Ferraris
Second, he compounded the situation by driving poorly
Third, he overdrove (as usual) and hit the curbing in the chicane too hard and broke his front suspension

Hey, I'm lobbying for style points for making the Jaguar call!
Great analysis, OTG! That race was total craziness. I wonder how hard Schumi really worked to try to get ahead of Rubens. I know he was flying as he came up, but it seemed to me that the time to do that sort of work was in the previous five laps, where he just seemed to be cruising.
The Bridgestones showed harbingers of their race performance, when Schumacher would run consecutive flying laps. Again, as I speculated (and I think we all knew) qualifying engines aside, BMW wasn't going to have the mustard for Ferrari on race day.
I'm with HoRo on the Montoya tip. I think that his driving style is harder on equipment. It was weird to see him bashing over the kerbs, and seeing little bits of carbon fibre go flying off the bottom of his car. When the suspension failed, I wasn't really surprised.
Bummer for Kimi, and what in the HECK was up with DC's drive? Reacting too late to keep from bopping his own teammate in the back...crikey. And it took him forever to get 'round Fisichella, which was surprising.
I'm happy for Jaguar, even though I think that Irvine's a prat. Again, OTG is on the money. I turned to a friend during the race and said "Now we're seeing the Lauda stuff." They're going to be even better next year, I think, as will Toyota. The power of that motor is impressive. They just have to solve the rest of the car.
And other than that, hopefully I'll see some of y'all at Indy!

What was that
What the hell was the "Live super slow motion" window that popped up on th ABC coverage? I don't know about other people, but where I live the broadcast was about 10 hours after the race finished.
Meebs That 52/53 thing is way tooo confusing.
OTG Agree on Sauber, but if Nick Heidfeld (is he there next year?) sucks with the Ferrari engine, send him back to Malaysia with Alex Yoong.
Horo1 Maybe we should print some "We hate Alex Yoong" badges? :D

...At the first chicane I ran into the back of Kimi as he slowed to avoid a car in front of him, and I wasn't quick enough to react. Ironically, earlier this week, Eddie shared his thoughts on David's chances of ever winning a world championship in his column in the current issue of "Formula One"
Eddie Irvine
[McLaren managing director Martin] Whitmarsh said that [Coulthard] is getting stronger every year. How can he possibly say that when the facts and figures show otherwise? ...At the first chicane I ran into the back of Kimi as he slowed to avoid a car in front of him, and I wasn't quick enough to react. As a result I had to go into the pits and get a new nose and then spent the rest of the race catching up. I was very careful to let the leaders through when I was lapped which lost me time and in hindsight that probably cost us a point.
David's error in the 1st chicane cost McLaren 3 or 4 points, as he would have been battling Irvine for the podium otherwise...
This is DC's ninth season in Formula One, and he's never driven anything other than a Williams or a McLaren. If it hasn't happened now, it ain't going to happen.
I would be surprised to see David in the McLaren seat in 2004. I would hope that Ron Dennis and company are actively looking for Kimi's 2004 partner starting today.

I agree about the Coulthard stuff, and kudos to Irvine for calling it like it is. Of course, he is by inference, suggesting that he might be better in that McLaren seat than D.C., a matter open to debate, but not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
Next season is going to be the one for D.C., I think. He'd better raise some serious hell. McLaren might say (this season) "Well, it took our car a while to catch up, and he did win Monaco with a very fine drive, though there had been ANY room on the track, that red car would have gotten by." But next year...
