The altitude makes me pretty sick as well, I get bad headaches and sometimes nausea. That is why I only go up for the practice day and not the race (you get stuck up there all day during the race), additionally the light is better during practice

Wimps.
I spent all day race day up at the Bottomless Pit running lugging around a 30lb HD camera and sticks. Was 12990 feet by my gps. The cold was worse then the altitude by far. I haven't been so cold in a long time.
I still felt like a wimp with joggers running past me. What's up with those nuts ?!

Been there done that. You see, I now know better ;)
Last year was stuck in a snow storm up there
But if it makes you feel better, I was nearly struck by lightning this year

12,750 ft is different from 14,110 ft.
That's 1,500 more feet of potential barfage.

It was actually pretty nice the few times the sun came out. Rather been about anywhere else during the morning.
Was a great little group of people hanging out up there. Our suffering brought us closer together ;)
I had to save some trapped OLN guys with my spare bags of chips. If I hadn't have been who knows what grusome thing they might have turned to to survive..

Nice shots Mopho. I could only make it on race day and there was no way I was going to the top. I'd have been as sick as a dog. So I had to make do with Mile 13. Got a few good shots, of which the one below is my favourite. Admittedly it's not a Sube. Wish the ones of Stig had turned out. I picked him up and drove him back to the start of a stage in Rally Australia in my Celica Group A GT4 in '96 when his Skoda died near my marshalling point. Nice guy. He was more worried about making a mess of my car than his retirement. Anyway, hope you don't mind me sticking my shot in your thread

That Evo was wicked, eh? I only saw it go in practice but holy smokes! Though the only Evo in it was the engine, I believe
It was a tube frame chassis and a carbon fiber bodyshell - Detuned to 750hp and 1900lbs!

Yeah it was pretty insane. I could tell it was one of the faster cars when it came up the hill. Sounds like he only lost because he made a mistake too. I have to admit I was hoping for more of the wild cars, such as Monster Tajima's Escudo or Rod Millen's GT4/Tacoma etc. Still it was an experience. Especially the cold! Boy oh boy.

I don't understand what happened to the Koseki STi. It sounded so off. I still can't believe why the FTO can't set a decent time. If anything, that EVO should have won it not for the blown tire.

Yeah, people from California get so worked up over bad weather, it's laughable. Heck I'm from California, and I could care less if it's raining horribly or if there's an occasional hail.

The four fastest guys all broke or had problems. Jimmy Keeney was the fastest qualifyer and looked right on it past me at Double Cut but blew his engine at Devil's. The EVO was next fastest and should have won after Keeney DNFed but lost at least 30 seconds with a flat tire with three miles to go. Donner had lots of HP but looked horrible through the corners. He managed to finish in one piece unlike the rest and that's what it takes to win sometimes.
Something broke on the STi, it was much faster all week. The Audi guys were extatic with their win. They are friends of mine and built the car in a little shop in Denver. They blew a turbo in qualifying and FedExed a new one in overnight.
As far as getting sick up there, you guys should know that there is a six beer limit at 14,000 feet. That's like drinking 18 beers at sea level.
:D

Thats was the best part of covering Pikes Peak. My beer tab was at least half what it usually is at these things.

I'd never even seen snow till I arrived in Wyoming where I'm working at the moment. Snow is a concept where I'm from in Australia, not a reality :) I had a shirt, a pullover and a ski jacket on and I was still freezing my arse off in the morning. Thank god it warmed up a bit as the day went on. Shame there were no blue skies though. Especially seeings as it was beautiful the next day. Typical!

Its required as part of the Colorado Hill Climb association. It means that the car is running gasoline. Some of the other mini sprints, etc run Methanol so they have a M on their car. Basically its just to let emergency crews know what is burning in case their is a major problem.
