Mounting my radar detector, problems with the suction cups part 1

Mounting my radar detector, problems with the suction cups
Hey,

So about a year ago, i replaced the suction cups on my Escort 8500 x50...all was fine over the summer, but now that its getting cold, i'm having trouble:

When the winshield is cold, the suction cups WON'T STICK. At all. They can't even hold themselves up, let alone my detector.

Any ideas from anyone? Know where i can get good suction cups that work? Or anything i can put on these cups to make them stick without leaving a residue on the winshield?

Any help is appreciated...

I keep mine up by the rear view mirror as well and I fight the suction cup battle every couple days when they fall. Drives me nuts. If anyone has a good fix for this I would love to hear it. Ive got some ideas and intend to fix this in the next week or so, i'll post if any of them work.

Running the defrost for a while with the cups near the heat helps, heats the window and cups and they will work again, still a pain in the ass.

I had the same problem with my old detector. Now the suction cups on my new cobra are 2x as big and have only come off 1 or 2 times over the last year.
mgsm666 12-09-2006 10:35 PM

The replacement cups i bought are bigger, and worked better at the start, but now that its cold, they don't stick at all. I'm not really comfortable putting my detector on my dash, and i have it hardwired --> I'd rather keep it up there for the better reception also.

I've heard about the boiling water trick, but i have a friend who said that it didn't help. I'm gonna give it a shot - guess it can't hurt. Any other ideas?

~Jesse

p.s. problem with the defrost is that it will fall every time i get out of the car, and i have to drive for 10-15 minutes before i can put up the detector. Kinda defeats the purpose.

any other ideas on how to get suction cups to stick again? Cold weather is a bummer.

haha yeh, i thought the site was pretty funny/ crazy what you can find on teh internet.. i use to have same problemo with my passport radar ! hasnt happened in a while though :) but once it comes off :furious: all hell breaks loose! its impossible to get it back the way it was... anyways gL with it
PROjekTWRX1 12-10-2006 12:56 AM

Mine never fall off.

Either lick the cups or wipe it with a wet rag, and breath hot air onto it, and then stick it onto the window. Thats what I did, and i never once had a problem.

Take the suction cups off and uase 3M double sided tape.
fuzzymemory 12-10-2006 09:17 AM

I had the same problem with my Passport. I even bought an "updated" mount from Escort but they sent me the same small suction cups that came with my detector. I find that mounting the detector just above and resting on the mirror helps quite a bit. It is hard to get it exactly right, but when you do, it will stay up for much longer. Tip - play with the height of the mirror more than the angle so that you aren't looking at the ceiling or back seat once you have the detector resting at a nice 90-degree angle.

Going on 3 years and my cups have NEVER come loose, now I only take the cups down once every 6 months or so since when I take the detector down I just unlatch it from the cups.
mgsm666 12-10-2006 11:31 AM

so any ideas on how to fix them when they DO come loose? Mine won't stick at all in this ****ty cold weather

seriously
if you put a drop of 2 of water on the cups before you put it on
it will never come off!!!
mgsm666 12-10-2006 02:12 PM

i know it sounds weird, but they don't stick at all when they're wet. I don't get it...i've tried the water trick.

u try taking off ur radar detector and doing that 2 drop water trick then apply press to it and let it settle for a bit then attaching the radar onto the suction cups.
mgsm666 12-10-2006 03:26 PM

tried it...it won't stick at all when its wet. I think i have the suction cups from hell. :furious:

njskatchmo 12-10-2006 03:28 PM

you can try buying softer rubber cups. I lick my finger an then circle the cup with teh finger before i put my detector up. It helps
RskTrance4mer 12-10-2006 03:51 PM

well i guess ur only options is buying a new suction cup..damn made in china stuff lol.
mgsm666 12-10-2006 03:58 PM

007WRX 12-10-2006 04:33 PM

3m tape dood.
sperry7 12-10-2006 06:17 PM

I got some velcro attached to my dash and the bottom of my radar. Can't see it and it sticks real well.

Or... you could get it hard wired up by your dome light.

Suction cups blow... Period.
mgsm666 12-10-2006 06:27 PM

Don't wanna mount it on the dash. I like it hidden up by the headliner - its hardwired right now. Actually pretty nicely, if i may say so myself. Mute button is by the shift knob, x50 is just to the left of the mirror.

Its just those damn suction cups.

I'll boil them tomorrow night (after exams), and then give it another shot. I have a few ideas, i'll let everyone know how it goes.

I've noticed that yes, it's harder to stick the cups when cold, but typically if I just moisten up the cups, rub 'em around on the area that I want it to stick to (to push the ice that forms almost instantly outside the suction cup), and just hold it for a minute it'll usually stay. Once it's on, it doesn't come off until I pull it off.

The other option, since you seem to like where you have your detector mounted, and have it hardwired, is to use a 3m tape or glue for it. You can always scrape the residue off the window with a razor blade later on if need be. But you won't have the issue with it falling off anymore.
007WRX 12-10-2006 06:58 PM

Are they illegal in the states?
bcarm 12-10-2006 07:01 PM

They are illegal in some states, not all.

You could also try to get some of that hook and loop or plastic velcro type stuff thats used to hold the transponders to the windshield, like fastlane or ezpass.
mgsm666 12-10-2006 09:18 PM

only illegal in Virginia, D.C., and i believe Oregon. Other than that, as long as its only recieving a signal (detector) as opposed to sending a signal (jammer), its fair game.

They bitch about them on any military base as well. But if its mounted high they wont notice when you go through the gate, unless you get pulled over and maybe not even then. :D

I fight this problem every 3 or 4 weeks. I like mine up by the mirror also and I'm pretty sure it's the black defrosting pattern on the windsheild that is making it harder for the cups to stick.

I usually lick them and they stay for a decent amount of time.

Yea, it's a bad idea to mount the suction cups on the defrosting pattern because it won't stick, period. In the cold just let your car warm up a bit and I usually just lick the suction cups and rub my finger around on them to dry them up a bit. Also, clean the windshield with windex and dry it up before sticking it on. Once its on it should stay, just avoid leaving your RD on the mount overnight if its cold because chances are you'll find it on your dash/seat in the morning. Especially with my V1, i'll take any precautions to keep it safe :p
