MTVs JDM my ride (rear wiper rant) part 1

MTVs JDM my ride (rear wiper rant)
Original inquiry for availability of JDM rear sedan glass with wiper and all the trimmings: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 2:48 PM

I officially order them (and some other stuff) a couple 'o days later. Boy am I excited. Time passes. Whats that in the mail? Cobb AccessPORT. Cool. Install. Time passes. Someone sends me headlights... right-o... JDM RHD to LHD headlight modding ensues. Time passes. My v7 exhaust shows up. Install. Weee. More time passes....

July 28th... a big truck shows up. Hey, that's not UPS. Truck guy goes into back of truck. Proceeds to throw stuff about. Joy... so much for rear glass, I think. Then he gets the dolly. What the crap is that? Why its a crate. A 3' x 5' x 2' crate... around a box... wrapped in celophane.

Did he send me a crate motor by mistake? :p

Try to get box in front door. No go. Try to open box. Truck guy is impatient. Sign for uber box and let him go. Cut off celophane. Cut open "top" of box. Remove... another box. During removal of other box proceed to dump packing peanuts all over front lawn. Its July... and it looks like Christmas. Boxes everywhere and fake packing peanut snow covers the lawn. Odd... neighbors don't look very jolly.

Take small box in house. Open box. Retrieve glass. Hurray! Packing peanuts spill on couch and carpet. Hmm... roommate will not be jolly either. Pick up peanuts and return to small box. Tape up small box. Take small box outside and jam in back seat. Hmm... box not as small as originally thought. REALLY jam box into back seat. Sucess.

Begin collection of outside peanuts as roommate arives with puzzled look. Attempt explanation of ordering a part to replace a part that isn't broken and would be covered under warranty or insurance anyway. Fail at explanation. Continue peanut collection. Thoughtful shipper included one packing peanut bag... how convienient. It is a big bag. You could prob fit two or three dead hookers in there. Fill bag. (With peanuts.) Still more peanuts. Get trashbags. Fill four trashbags. Break down box and crate. Wonder what to do with box and crate. Shower. Write angry email to shipper. Go to work.

Finish work. Before heading home, dump "small" box into work dumpster. Compact dumpster. Cool. Go home. Check email.

"...There should be a baggy with the bolts and washer arm cover in the box with the glass..."

Ahh... yes, the box in the dumpster. Return to dumpster. Dive in dumpster. Cut box. Dig around. Get baggy. Return home. Write angry email to shipper. Go to sleep.

Soooo, rear window is installed now. As is the motor and wiper arm. Pretty easy stuff. Still have to run the wires to the front, source a wagon wiper control stalk, install the washer tank with extra pump, and run the washer fluid hose to the window. Will it ever end?

Someday I'll get this uppipe in too.
2.5RSMatt 07-29-2004 06:39 PM

and here I was expecting the window to be broken. Great story with wonderful suspense. I give you a 8 out of 10 because of the lack of photos.
PARANOID56 07-29-2004 06:43 PM

yes, great story, but need pictures.

You've offically been JDM'd, Yo.
boneriffic 07-29-2004 06:50 PM

I was gonna take and post a pic, but the glass shop just installed it today. They put this ugly blue tape on that I'm not supposed to remove for 24hrs. So I'll snap a photo after I remove the tape.
SjYankee006 07-29-2004 08:04 PM

So you wrote an angry letter because it was packaged too well? Then you wrote another because you didn't notice the bag with the hardware in it? You should be thankful it didn't arrive in peices, seeing as how it was handled so poorly...

but yes, an otherwise well written story. ;)
bobsrex 07-29-2004 08:55 PM

rules of attraction fan? nice story.

dead-eye 07-30-2004 12:10 AM

Where did you get the rear window/rear wiper? Looks great.
YaZahX 07-30-2004 12:11 AM

got mine from a local jdm car part out
BoostdScubaru 07-30-2004 12:22 AM

i think JDM is for people with no style.. why would you "modify" your car to be stock in another country... what a ****ing waste of money... for the price you can buy something that makes your car faster. i hate people who do JDM ****... do you realize that the japanese are laughing at you... you just paid to make your car stock from stock... couldve bought an exhaust, etc.. **** JDM..
Uncle Scotty 07-30-2004 12:31 AM

I usually hate this kind of stuff....but I LOVE the rear wiper/glass.....100% total pimp :D

...and boostedscub..whatever....chill dude.....you making real ass out of yourself....like I usually do....but the window/wiper is one JDM thing that really works.
rabbitnutz 07-30-2004 12:34 AM

well, boostd doesn't like the japanese, and what they often have and we dont....that , or has never owned a gc8 and appriciated the need for a rear wiper

as to my main questions:
1. Best story ever
2. Where can i get one, how much was you're to install
3. did you have to do an IJ to get insurance to pay for window install ?
boneriffic 07-30-2004 01:11 AM

Ok, I'll indulge...
i think JDM is for people with no style..
I don't think I've ever had style... or cared. Rock out with your metro-sexual self... whatever works for you, man.
why would you "modify" your car to be stock in another country...
Umm... my personal oppinion is that its a pretty cool option.
what a ****ing waste of money...
Suffice it to say, I got a really great deal on this.
for the price you can buy something that makes your car faster.
Indeed. For the price I could have also bought a ton of sandwiches. Maybe I didn't want any sandwiches.
i hate people who do JDM ****... do you realize that the japanese are laughing at you...
Right again! My roommate is half-japanese (Haha! I have a JDM roommate too!)... and yes, he is laughing at me.
you just paid to make your car stock from stock... couldve bought an exhaust, etc.. **** JDM..
I guess I understand your point. But IF this was an option sold in the US would I be stupid to get it? Would I be stupid to pick it up from a US junkyard and install it? Is it just stupid because it came from Japan? Oddly enough, it is a perfectly functional item. Rain, snow, mud... squirt, wipe. Makes me happy. Its not like I'm picking up JDM shiftknobs, floormats, or uber wings here. Ah, whatever.

Well, to sum up... I have made all the wrong decisions had I been living your life instead of mine. My bad. Rock on with yer hate! :D
rabbitnutz 07-30-2004 01:34 AM

"Indeed. For the price I could have also bought a ton of sandwiches. Maybe I didn't want any sandwiches."

Possibly THE funniest thing i have ever heard on this website.

now, where can i get one? and how much should i expect to pay?
boneriffic 07-30-2004 02:00 AM

Well, they guy I got mine from insists that they will never do glass again. It was too much a pain in the butt for him and our agreed price killed him with shipping. This is a perfect example of why you can expect to pay $600+ through Kingpin or Chaste. And generally that is NOT including shipping. Kingpin quotes shipping to be roughly $150. You still have to install the glass. Shops are installing for between $75 and $125, maybe more... and some will not even take YOUR glass, you gotta use THEIR glass. Don't forget you need to get the wagon control arm (JDM arm is on the wrong side.) I swung by my dealer, picking up some gaskets, and inquired about the price... $120. I laughed. Opps, that was rude. I've seen it online for $40-$50... junk yards even cheaper (And this is the part I need to still pick up.) Hopefully you get a complete kit like I did and get the new washer fluid tank with both pumps allready installed. If not, you've gotta pick up another pump and drill a hole in your old tank. Looks like almost a grand... all total, I'm coming in at less than half that (and yes, I feel a little guilty, but I'm sure the part-out was still profitable for him.) For $1000, I would say it's not worth it - particularly because of the amount of sandwiches you could buy. I'd been looking for almost a year now until I found this one.
DanZ 07-30-2004 02:02 AM

great story. boostdscumbag, you should be quiet more often  ;) :p
BoostdScubaru 07-30-2004 02:08 AM

i was simply stating my opinion on your car.. i do not care what you do to your car... just dont act like your **** is so cool like the honda boys do... " man i could so smoke you , i got a jdm oil cap".... it looks like you have a nice car... just dont go crazy with making your car stock in japan... you do have a point though it was an option... but did you really need a rear wiper? or did you get it to be different...? its no biggie man, i appreciate a car done up for the fact that you are doing it.. dont take everyones opinion so harshly man... my opinion shouldnt bother you..anyway..happy modding, or stocking whatever it may be...
boneriffic 07-30-2004 02:15 AM
.. dont take everyones opinion so harshly man... my opinion shouldnt bother you..
...i hate people who do JDM ****...
You hate people who do JDM.
I do JDM.
You hate me.

I could give a dead rats colon about your oppinion... as far as the harsh-ness, that was your serve.
rabbitnutz 07-30-2004 03:37 AM

wow, almost 1k ? damn, untill i become a millionare, i will appriciate you'rs and stick with rainX

ok..
enewtabie 07-30-2004 08:12 AM

Don't worry bone..That rear window is a really sweet piece..who wants rear windows you can't see out of.Its not like you painted you car some gawdy color and showed it at HIN with 3000 stickers and blingin wheels or something..
JIN 07-30-2004 10:03 AM

Well, I read Boneriffic's post and it doesn't say anything about him saying his car is all so fast and all. He just said he has the rear wiper, and only the JDM cars come with rear wipers ... there is no need to generalise all JDM lovers to be rice boys. In fact, if you check out most rice boys, they have APC, Tenzo R stuff rather than any real JDM stuff.

I doubt the Japanese are laughing at us for trying to be JDM ... to each his own. Afterall, everybody is entitled to their own WRONG opinions.

Jin
Fusionpnoy 07-30-2004 11:25 AM

Maybe you should have bought the sanwiches instead. haha, j/k. I'd kill for a rear wiper or roof vent.
ptsmalls 07-30-2004 11:38 AM

Actually from what ive heard in Japan they swap our stuff on too....Im sure its the shiznit to drop in the usdm v8 motor, being that we got more HP but i guess that would be teh ghey too.

I love the us sti but damnit! the wiper guys ! I want one sooo bad. historically every cool super car ive seen from japan has a rear wiper, i wana be cool too! hahah
Calamity Jesus 07-30-2004 11:52 AM

Nice story.
chopaholix 07-30-2004 01:39 PM

and do you realize everyone is laughing at you?
boneriffic 07-30-2004 03:28 PM

:furious: digi-cams batteries are dead... more pic postponements.

Sweet. Loved the little story!

quentinberg007 07-31-2004 08:16 PM

The rear wiper is awesome.

I would love my RS to be modded to a stock STi Ver V. :p

eastcoastbumps 07-31-2004 10:34 PM

I think its cool that you have the wiper. This is one of the funniest threads ever. I'd prefere to have a smooth looking car so I'd never add the rear wiper. I actually had a bunch of stuff shaved and painted last time my car was in the shop. I also removed the stock rear wiper from my VW. I'd remove the wiper from my WRX if it came with one.

Actually idiot since you know jack squat about Japanese people let me learn you sumpin. First off IDIOT the Japanese do the same thing the Americans do they buy STOCK American car parts and place them on their car to make it look more like a Stock American Version.
Now I know that in your infinate wisdom you might think I am stupid but let me assure you I have been in Japan since 96 and WRX guys running around with a 2.5RS badge is pretty funny. So think before you speak IDIOT!!!
samwY 07-31-2004 11:55 PM

I think Japanese products have the most style. Why don't appreciate their style for their own cars that you buy? You are in THEIR market.
DuoMaxwell 08-01-2004 09:48 AM

Errr I do appreciate their market. Also you can try and refrain from dogging me I would tend to think I know enough about the Japanese culture to get by. I have seen a few JAPANESE guys with 2.5RS badges on their gc8 WRXs. Like the saying goes the grass is always greener on the otherside.
?????????
Ahzlon 08-01-2004 10:10 AM

the rear wiper blade is a kewl mod IMHO... I have been lookin into doing this mod for a while.. it's would be really nice to beable to keep my rear window really clean especialy in the winter with the snow.... or even a really heavy down pour... but eveyone has their own opinion...

and the idea that the japanese put 2.5RS badges on thier CG8 WRX's .. i would have never thought they would do that.. but totaly sweet

Maicca 08-01-2004 02:04 PM

Hmm... let's see.

JDM = Brembo front and rear brakes. Nah, no improvement over my stock WRX equipment.
JDM = v7 motor. Nope, nothing to envy there over the stock WRX!
JDM = stock gold 17" rims. Geez talk about gawdy.... who wants those??
JDM = less cats. No power gains there.
JDM = Spec C. Who wants that??
JDM = roof vent + scoop. Air? Who needs more air???
JDM = larger hood scoop. Absolutely no benefit there!

I could go on......

........and yes, I have seen the badge of a 2.5RS sitting in a glass case in Japan, selling for about US $180.

And the point to this=uh, mmmm, thinking, NOTHIGN!

I would love for you to go on, but I prefer you not too.
boneriffic 08-01-2004 03:15 PM

lol  ...

I started this thread with the, "Look at me, I'm an attention whore, and look at my new toy!" mentality.

Now it feels like an STi badge debate.

So, I still haven't gotten to the store to buy batteries for the digi-cam. I'll get some today. The important thing is... it's raining. And I'll get to use my wiper. :D .... what can I say, simple minds, simple pleasures.

SRT might be teh f4star, but it ain't got a rear wiper!
YaZahX 08-01-2004 03:32 PM

u will notice all u need to do is do 1 sweep and your set, rain doesnt collect on the rear window while driving, it collects while sitting. i liked mine for off roading and snow :)
