Music Suggestions for Motorsports Video?
Hey everyone,
I'm putting together a video to take to potential sponsors for 2003 that will have footage of our USTCC WRX. I'm looking for suggestions for the music playing through the video. Something energetic and fast paced. Several of the rally videos that have been posted here were awesome and I'm looking for music that works as well.
Thanks!
Gary

Coati,
That is very energetic! I think it's a little too headbanging for what I'm looking for, though. Thanks for the suggestion!

You're welcome.
Okay, so there's an upper limit rule to the "energetic fast-paced" part: Don't scare the sponsors.
How about:
Song: Hip Hop Phenomenon
Artist: BT

If you want some music that gets away from the standard race/motorcycle/gen-x (limp bizkit, korn, linkin park) music format that almost ALL of the videos out on the market use try a couple of these.
STEVE MORSE: High Tension Wires. HE is one of the most renowned guitar players in the world but not as widely heard as someone like Eddie Van Halen. This album is a fantastic guitar based collection of INSTRUMENTAL songs. It has slow building ethereal hard rock ballad styles as well as blistering fast pieces.
Try track #8 called "tumeni notes" as in Too Many notes. very, very fast picking, and he can play it live exactly like you hear it!
Also Craig Chaquico: Acoustic Highway or Acoustic Planet is very good instrumental stuff. He used to play lead for Jefferson Starship but left that band and his new type of instrumental guitar based music is very nice.
Ottmar Liebert and Jesse Cook are fantastic flamenco style guitar players and have some very nice instrumental/fast paced pieces on their albums as well.
hope that helps
mike
p.s. I am not knocking Limp bizkit, Korn or linkin park, i have all of their stuff and enjoy it when I am in the mood. Don't want any flaming bashers coming after me!

If you want super fast paced, I suggest some Euro techno. And if your potential sponsors watched Initial D then they will identify with it more :D:D:D

Sweetness by Jimmie Eat World. I know it's been in another video but that song makes me want to go racing.
Not sure if this one as been in a video yet. Summer Song by Joe Satriani.
Maybe something by System of a Down.
Offspring had a bunch of fast paced songes on the "Smash" CD.
Maybe No Doubt.
Machine Head by Bush.
Hole has some good fast paced songs on "Live Through This".
Older Metalica.
Pennywise or most other punk music. NOFX.
Negative Creep by Nirvana.
Don't the Chili Peppers have some fast older songs?
I'm done for now.

I saw a really cool video for a rally car team (cant remember which, they had a 2.5RS) with:
Group: Lo Fidelity All Stars (maybe its High Fidelity?)
Song: Battleflag
It fit the video perfectly, they timed the jumps just right to go with the song. But then again, you probably dont want a song thats been used already. Anyway, let us know what you finally use. I've always wanted to make a video of me driving really slowly with a badass song in the background.
I'd recommend a fastpaced and energetic song like you said, but i'd also add that the song should not scare people and they should maybe recognize it a little bit (or failing that, be a really cool song by an indie group).

Maybe Rammstein might do. I find that most of their songs are adrenaline pumping. Also how about Get Free by the Vines?

how about Bjork? I think one good song is called hunter
how about radiohead- really robotic and some songs have high energy.
I always think of racing when I listen to these.

Nice! It's the Butthole Surfers, I think, with Al Jorgensen (of Ministry and Lard) doing the vocals.

2 Skinnee J's- Ball Point Man
both are really energetic and catchy, but arent mainstream or crap off the radio.

I always wanted to throw together a motorsports video using "chemical beats" by the chemical brothers offa their album exit planet dust. - gotta love that cowbell!
The track hangs right around 110bpm, groovy but hard and energetic, with a funky acid line overtop, plus buildups and breakdowns that aren't cheezy. it would make for some nice cutup sequences. The track could be shortened a bit pretty easily too, or looped to make it a bit longer.

I am so sorry for this...
How about the song from the intro to GT2...by far the best intro of any video game.
Group: The Cardigans
Song: Favorite Game
It build you up slowly, and rises to a nice creshendo(sp??????).
How about some Hendrix...some Purple Haze? The Led Zeplin/stairway heaven is a interesting idea. I have a picture in my head of slow motion footage, of a a car drifting out of control with the tires smoking(no sound), all the while with the intro to stairway to heaven playing. It will add some "real" drama rather than taking something like footage of somebody changing a tire to the sound of head-banging music. This will make the footage more important than the music.
I think that something that starts nice and mellow, and rises to a nice climax, all the time without being over the top/childish/corny/false would sweet. Pick a song that appeals to a broad aray of people. If you went right for the head-banging stuff, you have already turned off a large group of people.
Having a song that has many different "moods" (for lack of a better word) will let you show all kinds of footage. You will give a better "feel" of what it is really like to road-race. You can show the cars leaving the pits, warming tires, working on the car, in their "real light" rather than using over-stylized camera angles/movements/cuts to make the film fit the song. If the song is all "action", the movie will have to be nothing but people crashing into one-another and this can get expensive from the car owners point of view. The grace and skill of road racing has been turned into ham-fisted, demolition derby. (aka eye-candy) Eye-candy is great for getting attention, but your message will be quickly erased by all the "hype".
A film/song should be like a rollercoaster. Lots of ups-and downs. How fun would it be if it was all "high's"? The drops create the action. If you are trying to sell this to people, then try something different. Extream action/loud is so played. I think something with an understatment will stand out.
Later,

Prodigy's good, but Smack is probably a little rough. Try Firestarter. There's an instrumental version out there they did for a video game which would probably be better as there's a little bit of profanity in the song :) "Voodoo People" by Prodigy is also damn good.
Other random stuff:
Cowgirl from Underworld, older techno but definitely rocks.
Funny Break by Orbital. Pretty low key and has a great beat.
Crystal Method's remix of POD's "Boom" rocks. It's on their Community Service CD.
Just about anything from Crystal Method's first CD, Vegas, actually. ;)
I do hope you'll be sharing this video with the club! :)
-tim
p.s. There's also that "Going for Distance" song from a few years ago... I have no idea who sings it. Not really loud or hard-driving, but definitely appropriate to the racing scene.

Bomb Funk MC's - Freestyler is pretty good, I agree.
Prodigy - Smack My Bitch up would be good if not fgor the swearing, however Lo Fidelity All-Stars - BattleFlag is excellent... just look for a radio edit of it that has no swearing and you're set.
I really hate to suggest it because I have a strong dislike of the band due to their anti-Napster crap and starting the RIAA's road to being a PITA, but Metallica - Sad But True has the catchy, powerful guitar sound, though I'm not sure if the lyrics are good for you or not.
If you want electronic/dance, check out Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin Beats.

I also very highly recommend:
Soul Coughing - Super Bon Bon
Very very nice, would work well.
A different approach would be some sort of "Getaway" music with a banjo and a little southern twang to it.

One song I can't help but drive fast to is "Speed Parade" by Slash's Snake Pit on the "Ain't Life Grand" album. Actually, there are several songs on that album that would work well, I think.

I don't think the song that you use is as important as how the video is timed to it. Someone just sent me this. I know it's not what your looking for but it's a good example of how timing the video and the music makes it flow better.

this same thing out of time would'nt have the same effect. Some of the rally vids I've seen on this site are very well done while others are just footage with music playing in the background.
That said you may want to consider a break from the norm and use a piece of classical music or even a movie score. Two of my favorites being Anvil of Crom from Conan and the lobby scene from The Matrix.

Hello,
I know this is not relevant, exactly, but after seeing Gumby's post, above, I went to http://www.grouchymedia.com to see what else there was, there. That video was excellent. There is a predecessor to that one, Taliban Bodies (done to "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor") and there is NBC coverage of Taliban Bodies, which was done in October of last year.
Great video... And now back to Gary's quest for music and racecar footage.
So I suppose no one thinks a good classical music score would be appropriate? :p

Great video... And now back to Gary's quest for music and racecar footage.
So I suppose no one thinks a good classical music score would be appropriate? :p

Actually, classical music could be used to great effect. Like that one SpeedChannel ad from a while back. Unfortunately, I'm aweful at remembering the names of classical pieces. Another benefit of using a classical piece is they're usually cheaper than contemporary CD's.

anything by *NSYNC.

Great ideas.
I also found Offspring - Genocide and Lunatic Calm - Leave you Far Behind. Both have great beats and lyrics that apply.
Another one I was thinking of that would be original is Shambala by the Beastie Boys. It would allow a very dramatic intro and ending and would be good with slo-mo and fades.

How about some thing with some crazy 60's psychhedelic rock? Check out a song called Pictures of Matchstick Men, by Status Quo?
Others to look at:
-Hard to Explain
By The Strokes
-Star Spangled Banner
By Jimi Hendrix (all american, wild, crazy, everybody knows the tune):):D:cool:

With some good camera work, and editing, I think that could work quite well infact. That would really standout against every other racing video out there. I think you should try a totaly new angle, and some extreamly different music could do just that.

Here's a CD I put together for my own spirited drives... any/all of the songs should do quite nicely:
Messiah - Turn the key and go
Safri Duo - Played-A-Live
Prodigy - Funky s*** (there's a couple remixes, some without the words you may not want your sponsors to hear, and some where it goes long enough inbetween that you'd be ok ;) )
Prodigy - Poison (Prodigy Rat Poison remix)
Rob Zombie - Dragula (Hot Rod Herman remix, from The Matrix)
Chemical Bros - It began in Afrika
JFK - Whiplash (Bad Habit Boys remix)
Chemical Bros - Leave Home
BT - Never gonna come back down
Apollo Four Forty - Stop the Rock
Antiloop - Start Rockin'
Roots + BT - Tao of the Machine (Blade 2 sdtk)
Trevor Rabin - The Last Car (Eleanor) (Gone in 60 score)

Here you go...
Johan de Meij - Gandalf (movement 1 from Lord of the Rings-inspired scores, esp portion dubbed "Shadowfax")
Holst - Planets (esp Mars, bringer of war)
Percy Grainger - Sheperd's Hey! (and maybe others)
Various arrangements - Wedding Dance (as performed by Tokyo Wind Ensemble)
More instrumentals that aren't necessarily classical, though some I suppose could be dubbed as such:
John Williams - Duel of the Fates
John Willaism - Cantina Band (okay, maybe not this one)
Arturo Sandoval - A Mis Abuelos (minute 2 - end)
Buddy Rich Big Band - Straight, no chaser (from Burnin' for Buddy vol 1 CD)
Danny Elfman -- lots of his stuff, esp from Batman (the original) movie score (not the soundtrack)
Aaron Copland -- (lots of his stuff)
I could continue... but I think you have more than enough to choose from with all of the songs listed in this thread. ;)

Crystal Method
and
White Zombie/Rob Zombie
Have some very energetic music. Many of their songs are part of soundtracks for movies such as the Matrix and The Replacement Killers.
