My S202 Inspired Interior....

Got rid of the "silver trim that doesnt match anything else on the car"
and covered it up with a smooth not so unsightly flat black top coat.
Yea, I got an 04, but i still have the much better looking interior of the 02-03 (ala the S202 reference), and Im glad i got mine over the 05's at the time, still cant stand the new interior...

6 bucks in paint and i got blacked out headlights and S202 styled interior, AND ive quenched the fiery mod-bug for yet another weekend.
EDIT: sorry, heres the "before" pic just in case you want a one stop reference.

I like it, all black is definetly better having silver here and there.

+1 on not liking the new interior... I like the 04 interior over 05, but they didn't have any new 04's left on the lot :)
I really like what you did. Now all you need is the s203 hazard light...
I say kill that red trim. Now that really doesn't match.

The red trim piece matches the exterior 100%, its the exact same paint the body shop used to fix my rear passenger door. They gave me the leftovers from the paint job and i used my airbrush at home to do the trim. Looks way better in person, not as vibrant as it appears in the pic cause of the flash.
S203 Hazard button is a good idea, but itll have to wait a while until we are all caught up with the vet visits and stuff with the new puppy im bringing home next sunday. I considered painting mine SRR to match the exterior, but then i wouldnt see the hazard part light up thru the paint anymore.
Also, i would have liked to kill the silver around the gauges with either black or bodymatched red like the trim, but upon inspection, the trims are part of the bezel and cant be taken off to paint. Im not THAT goot at painting and would probably kill my bezel and need a new one.

I got it from Jamie. I think she always has them ready to go from the warehouse.
It comes in the same silver color as the stock console and i think it was around 24 bucks with shipping. I just like it better than having an open pocket, but some would disagree and take the open pocket to keep a more JDM look.

What kind of paint did you use for that? I like it how it's flat flat black. No gloss at all. Someone already said it... Very Audi like. I like how Audi make their console's flat black they almost look fuzzy. Makes you feel all warm in side. :D

It was just a can of rustoleum grey auto primer, and a can of rustoleum flat black auto paint.
The can codes are as follows if you want to use the EXACT same paint:
Primer: Rustoleum 2081
Paint: Rustoleum 202683

I think the article was just something about a localized tornado that went thru during one of the recent storms. I didnt pay much attention to the articles, i was more focused on trying to squash the mod bug for another week.

Dont use Fusion, the stuff is total crap. Worst Idea ever. Besides, your not painting onto bare plastic anyways. Just do it in 2 steps like i did with gray primer and glat black top coat. I prefer grey since its neutral and will show where you need to add more paint until you have an even black finish on the pieces.

I was thinking of stripping the silver off with nail polish remover. From what I heard Fusion is great at bonding with plastic. It sounds like you have a different experience with it. Could it have been other factors involved and not the paint (like not enough prep, etc.)

Nope, the paint is total crap, it will flake off in pieces over time. I also believe the price of one can would stil cost more than primer and top coat to do the job right. And definitely DONT strip the existing paint off the trim with any paint removers, it will eat right thru the surface of the plastic and throw off the chemical makeup of the plastic and the paint will NEVER bond properly to it. Your best off leaving the trim untouched other than a quick prep with some sopay water to get surface dirt off the pieces. You dont even need to prep the surface of the trim with any sandpaper or brillo pads or anything. The trim will take the primer just fine the way it is.
Sorry for the huge rant, but ive done a lot of painting and its just not worth trying to cut corners or make the job harder than it has to be. Your going to do more work to 1) strip the paint off, 2) prep the bare plastic, 3) spray your fusion on and hope it takes. when all you have to do with conventional paint is primer and topcoat it. It literally took me 15 minutes TOPS to primer and topcoat all the trim and then let it sit about 2 hours (while i went shopping for groceries for the next week and pick up some puppy supplies at the pet store).

Why do people keep saying that? The pics make it look like its day-glo. The paint is San Remo Red basecoat and matches the exterior of my car perfect. It does not GLOW in real life like it does in the pictures. It looks MUCH better than the stock silver/Ti color it came in.
Please for the love of god read thru the thread before making yet another post about the shifter trim. Thank you.

i thought of painting my trim the color of my exterior paint.... then i remembered i have a white car.... i think itd look nice in a WRB car. dunno about SRR..
i ended up painting it all medium charcoal metalic... scuffed all the surfaces , used plastic primer and duplicolor auto paint, 2 coats each. finished it all up with 3 coats of flat clearcoat. looks nice in my opinion, did the window switch trims too.. id post pics but i am not totally sure how. i am a newb.
if anyone wants to help me post them, pm me.

How long had you had it painted? How has it held up? Does the "flat" clear coat show everything (scratches, etc)

Just a quick update on the re-paint of my trim. So far it is holding up very well and isnt showing anything more than dry skin if i rub my fingers on it. Easy to clean thou, just a wet cloth (water only), give it a quick wipe down and let it dry and good as new again.

What about getting the trim powder coated ??
| G3Red04WRX | 11-06-2005 07:25 PM |
What about getting the trim powder coated ??
Powdercoat wouldnt hold to the plastic and would probably end up melting the trim pieces when they send them into the oven to bake....
powdercoating is the process of electrically charging a metal piece, and electrically adhering flake to the piece, and then baking the flake to a liquidous consistency and letting cool to a hard candy shell.
Hey, is flat black the way to go....I was thinking about semi-gloss....maybe it would go with the dash a little better? What does everyone think?
I think it would look like cheap plastic trim if it were painted with a reflective top coat. Flat black or rubberized top coat is the way to go if you want black.
Any other color is up to personal preference thou.
A total stock repaint in silver should be semi-gloss thou like original.
EDIT: sine this thread just got brought from the dead recently, ill add that the trim is holding up VERY well since it was done almost 7 months ago already.

I took my time and it looks 100% factory, actually better than factory. Mine only cost about 7 bucks in paint. the 2 paint codes i used (primer and black) are posted up a few lines, and can be had same day from just about every hardware or automotive store that carries spraypaint.
