I would have gotten out after a couple of turns at one of the corner stations I think.

That dude is COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL. For the sake of the others on that track I was hoping he'd hit a rail and take himself out of the day. Sheesh.
Actually, that red car wasn't much better.

They were doing a "vs." battle during an instructional track event?

that guy was countersteering like all he had was a d-pad on a playstation! full lock each direction.

The way he was driving, it looks like that's were he learned his "performance driving". Maybe a NFS title?
Sheesh there were so many times he was about to crash; and he didn't even know it or didn't care.

Do they really put up with that much at European DE events? Driving like that would get your ass sent home right quick at a PCA event.

You need to install the right codec to your machine. I dunno which codec this one was.

That's unbelievable. He would have lasted 30 seconds and been warned, then likely tossed for antics like that at most DEs.

how else are you supposed to learn? im just curious as ive never driven at a track or anything.
| BIGSKYWRX | 11-17-2006 09:30 PM |
Well you start w/ a good instructor, many events won't let you solo until your "checked off" by one of their instructors. Even if you have to pay- get an instructor- you'll learn more in a session or two than a couple of days out on your own.
These guys were screwing off start to finish- not smart at track speeds. Personally I've never seen more irresponsible (AND poor) driving at a track in my life.

I've never seen someone drive like that at a track day... HPDE's give you the boot for driving that close, or having that many offs, or just for being a dick which that guy was.
I'm in shock they let that go on, must be completely different rules over there, and they were going pretty DAMN fast out there too (the car was doing pretty well I thought).
The only spot where I noticed really bad driving was that last spin where he was countersteering like a mofo and didnt need to do anything the car seemed to be recovering fine.

You start by driving within your means and then work your way up as the instructor helps you.
The guy in the vid was driving way over his means, but the car was compensating. I'm pretty impressed with his car actually.

WOW, they are very lax over there, maybe they dont have to deal with tons of lawsuits or something, that guy was driving like an ass.

No codec for me either. :(
Interesting thread to read though, after just instructing at a DE yesterday. I was signed up to work with an STI owner, which didn't show, so I jumped in to help a guy in an S2000. I was not informed that the S2000 was supercharged until moments before our first session.
The guy did a great job, and by the end of the day we had worked to build his confidence in the car and brought the lap times down. One little off track & spin taught him a lot about making sure you're on line when at speed.
All that being said, I will not hesitate to: A)Bring a student in immediatly if he/she feels I am of no use and they are not listening to anything I say and/or they are doing something risky. B)Ask the event officials to judge if the student should be allowed to continue or not.
Instructing isn't all that bad, and a lot of times you can learn something while instructing. The key is getting a good student who wants to learn, and who will at least try things your way, if if they don't agree. Of course, sometimes you have to let them try things their way too, as long as nobody will get hurt. (see off course example above)
If you're thinking of doing a DE, be open minded, and hopefully you'll get an open minded instructor. If you don't, request another.

FWIW, my brother has done a number of track days over in England and the events seem pretty similar to what we run here. So that behavior and lack of firm instruction isn't typical of all events over on that side of the pond at all.
I agree that the car seemed pretty damn capable. Right from the start, the turn in at the first corner I was like  Damn!
Pat

That driver doesn't know how to pick a line and use it, throttle steer, or judge corner entry speeds. He's lucky his car is compensating. Unbelievable
| kfoote | 11-19-2006 07:03 AM |
Good thing it was at a track that's very forgiving. Try that at a place like Lime Rock, and the car would have been toast.
Having instructed at LRP last weekend, this guy needed to have a severe talking to...both the instructor for letting it happen and the student.

"I know, it's a pain in the tits"
I've taught at Knockhill...it is a tricky circuit but you do find alot of nutters there who think they're David Coulthard...

Is that an instructor riding w/ him or just a buddy- I got the feeling it was just a buddy- he seemed to be as bad as the driver.

pleiades....next time i'll request you as an instructor if you your at the same events i go to.
The STi made it home just fine. I stayed out of boost and set the cruise on 70. The temp remained good and I don't think the car was hurt.
I really enjoyed meeting you after reading so many of your posts.

Hate you didn't get much time out on track. Glad to hear the car is ok. I'll be happy to help you at any future events. If you're planning on going to an event, just email me, and I will try to be there. ([emailprotected])

A good instructor would have been able to reel him in just enough to avoid the tap of the other car.
It looked like the instructor took over the wheel for the spin.
Most of the run wasn't overly scary (including the student's off) to me.
The cones marking the end of the passing zone looked like a neat idea.

If you read the comments on Streetfire, that was just one of his buddy's in the passenger seat and they were only out there to mess around and "have a laugh" trying to race each other. I don't think that guy was trying to take the correct line through any of the corners...
That guy is an asshat though...and was very close to getting himself, his passenger and possibly another drive killed.
