Oregon Trail Rally, April 20-23! part 1

sfisher71 04-19-2006 12:30 PM

Oregon Trail Rally, April 20-23!
The 2006 Oregon Trail Rally is this weekend! While it's all good, Northwest Subaru fans should be aware of one very special event:

Thursday, April 20, Rally America is hosting their Rally Fan Appreciation Day with a special show in Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland, Oregon.

The biggest news for NASIOC members: Subaru Rally Team USA will be there in force, with drivers Travis Pastrana and Ken Block on hand to meet, sign autographs, and talk rally.

A total of 18 teams and vendors are expected in "Portland's living room" from 11 AM to 2 PM on Thursday. Oregon Rally Group will be playing video from the 2005 Rally America championship as well. We'll also be distributing spectator guides to the weekend's competition, including maps on how to get to the forest stages, a partial schedule of events, and more.

This event is free and open to the public, so come on down and say hi!

Then on Friday afternoon at Portland International Raceway, the rally begins with a Parc Expose at 3 PM. First car out is scheduled for 4:21 PM (4:21 on 4/21, couldn't be easier to remember...) Competition will use a combination of racetrack tarmac and gravel access roads. The last stages will be run after dusk, so come out to PIR and watch rally cars light up the night.

On Saturday, April 22, the rally circus moves to Hillsboro Stadium for a parc expose at 9 AM and a ceremonial start at 10. Saturday's action revolves around the Trask area in the Tillamook State Forest, and may include snow at the highest elevations (our checkout crews early in the week sent back pictures that looked more like Rally Sweden...), so spectators should dress in layers and prepare for ANYTHING.

Then on Sunday, April 23, the rally returns to Vernonia, Oregon, for the final day's competition. Beginning with a Parc Expose at 8 AM, the rally is scheduled to end at the Hillsboro Les Schwab shortly before 6 PM.

For more information, see the following Web sites:

See you there!

I'll be watching the RA forums; whish I was there!
bjorn240 04-19-2006 04:15 PM

Yeah, Travis will be both at Courthouse Square and at the dealer show.

sfisher71 04-19-2006 05:25 PM

Yes, Travis (and also Ken Block, winner of the 100 Acre Wood rally at Salem, MO) will be at Wentworth tomorrow night, along with some of the management of Subaru Northwest who helped make this rally possible.

I have to give a big THANK YOU to John Hubach of Subaru Northwest for their sponsorship of rallying and of the Oregon Trail Rally in particular. They're picking up the tab for the after-rally banquet, and we're very grateful for that.

Then again, I'm living proof that motorsport sponsorship is effective -- about half the reason I bought my WRX was out of respect and appreciation for the degree to which Subaru is involved in motorsport and supports it at every level, from the free SCCA membership that came with my '04 sedan, to the rally support truck that follows the Rally America championship around the country, all the way up to the WRC.

(The other half of the reason I bought a WRX, I don't think I need to tell anybody on this forum... :-)

Travis is a genuinely cool guy...
Yeah, Travis will be both at Courthouse Square and at the dealer show.

- Christian
He was indeed, signing posters at both events. VERY personable guy, high energy and great with the fans. He'll be at a couple of other stops over the weekend signing hats, T-shirts -- a friend suggested I should have had him sign my WRB '04 sedan. :-)

At Wentworth, they had a digital camera and printer set up with Travis' rally car. You could have your picture taken with him and have him sign it.

I got him to sign a couple of posters for me and for my son Charlie. After all, Charlie is the kid who described Ferrari as "my favorite non-Japanese race car." I'm raising that one right, clearly!

I really wanted to make to the rally since this is my first year up here. But low and behold, the Navy's got me working on Saturday. Thanks Navy. I guess I'll have to live through the pictures.

I was on the crew for the streaming, it wasn't easy. This was a test run to see how to do things in the future. There will be more next time, just not sure when next time will be.

I liked it when you guys cut to my new boston puppy playing with the audi crew. :) And sorry for getting my big ass head in the way...

Can't wait...I'm not going to complain about US Rally coverage...it's better than the nothing we had before.
bjorn240 04-24-2006 09:48 PM

Great rally. Fantastic roads! Travis and I were under strict orders to finish, so we didn't push at all. On Saturday Andy built a nice lead so we weren't going to chase him, but on Sunday morning, Ken and Matt Iorio were banging away at each other, about 40 seconds behind us, and we wanted to keep them both back behind us so we had to push a little to keep them at bay. After Matt went out with a blown motor on SS15, Ken and Travis just agreed to pedal it home softly on SS16-17-18. We did a donut at the spectator area on SS17.

Ah well, first loser and all that, but no drama at least. Real co-driver's event.

Wow!

I figured Pinker would be fast. Congrats on the first win. Finishing is winning in rally! Good job SRT-USA keeping it together.

I took a lot of pictures while I was there, so here they are:

There are lots of sequence shots, even after I deleted a lot of the not-so-great ones.

187...didn't know you were coming out to OT, you should have said something.
akuhner 04-27-2006 05:54 PM

My wife loved the picture of your puppy.

I think I did say I was going out there for video stuff, but maybe not in this thread...
FlooredSubaru 04-27-2006 10:28 PM

I did not end up rolling my car.

I did however run into a stump on the last stage of the rally. on a L4>3 at 3.24 miles in.

I let the rear end of the car step out to scrub speed for the tightens. The super slick stuff on the outside pulled the rear end off the road. Then I thought we were going to go rolling into the senery. Then BAMB stump and end of rally.

Me getting my talk on with Jimmy B. and Christan E.:
http://www.printroom.com/ViewgalleryPhoto.asp?userid=ronjarnold&gallery_id=367960&image_id=48

Grant and I setting the 2nd fastest stage time out of everyone:
http://www.printroom.com/ViewgalleryPhoto.asp?userid=ronjarnold&gallery_id=367961&image_id=34

Grant and I going really fast by lots of spectators:
http://www.pdxsports.com/photos/showphoto.asp?folder=2006OT&photo=20060423101.jpg

And what I did to my car jumping off the road on a Left 4 tightens to 3 with lots of marbles on the outside:

http://www.landefabrication.com/pics/crash/crash4.JPG
http://www.landefabrication.com/pics/crash/crash5.JPG

The car will be heading to the body shop to get new frame rails on Monday or Tuesday.

I picked up most of the damaged parts today, as long as the engine is Ok we will be racing again soon.

I am finally ok with the crash becouse it happens and in the end of the day Grant and I are both ok and can head back to work to pay for the next event.
spdracr00 04-27-2006 10:34 PM

I almost feel bad saying it.. buuuuut "that'll buff out"
bjorn240 04-27-2006 10:34 PM

Erik,

I'm really glad to hear the motor is ok. See you at STPR?

- Christian
rally_a_4g63 04-27-2006 10:40 PM

Erik, I was glad you both were getting out of the car when we went by, at a glance it looked worse, that was a big stump. That was a slick corner, and you were just a couple of hundred yards from the spectators, anyone catch it on tape? see ya around

Subie Gal 04-27-2006 10:56 PM

damn Erik

I'm sorry :(

not sure what's worse...

rolling your car at Oregon Trail (me last year)

or leading the Saturday regional rally overall by 30 seconds
and then having the tranny quit on you... (me this year)

i'll be back next year... once of these times i'll get it right

Hope you are okay. Get the car sorted, and get back out there!!!

Rally on,

Saturday I know the results as I was leading w/one stage to go...
when the car jammed up and refused to keep going.

Saturday:
Yoon
Cavett
????

Sunday
Cavett
??
??

Cavett and I live together ;) so of course I keep tabs on him :D

Wish I had more info but I left to get working on the race car right away.

Rally-America's not going to post regional info
And our region website is um.... yeah. a bit slow

Why would you make a statement like that?

Go to:

http://www.rally-america.com/Update/day/day_index.html

click "Results" and scroll to the bottom of the page for the regional results for each of the three days.

Doug Woods
bjorn240 04-28-2006 09:22 AM

You can also use the dropdown and select ClubRally (oh, how quaint!) and see the results by stage, listing only drivers entered in the regional.

Anyway, the results were:

Friday (Wagons Ho):
Cavett
Hintz
Eklund

Saturday (Oregon or Bust):
Yoon
Cavett
Goodwin

Sunday (Trails End):
Cavett
Yoon
Eklund
Why would you make a statement like that?
Because in order to...
Go to:

http://www.rally-america.com/Update/day/day_index.html
you have to know that the regional (not "Club," as Christian rightly pointed out) results are only available on the old RallyAmerica site, and that the only way to get there is to click on the "login" button on the (new sites's) main page.

I don't think many "casual fans" or "passers by" to the RA site are going to know that. Heck, I don't think many of the regulars even know that :p

By the way, I'm not grumbling (at you) Doug. And, yes, I know RA is working on updating things. :)
